Tabs to open later on demand

While reading a web page with hyperlinks - "first page"- I want to be able to click on the hyperlink - "new page" - but not yet open the new web page. When I right-click on the hyperlink on the "first page" and select "Open Link in New Tab" the link to the "new page" opens a new tab and the "new page" opens immediately so that I leave the "first page" I was reading and want to continue reading but I now see the "new page". I want to be able to click on one or more hyperlinks on the "first page" but not to leave that "first page"that is open until I finish reading it. Then, by clicking on the new tab with the "new page" I want to open the "new page/tab containing items selected from the "first page". Please help.

Instead of selecting "Open in new tab," select "Open in background tab." Or use middle mouse button click. Or use Ctrl+Click. Or program in whatever mouse gesture you would like to use for "open in background tab."

The only thing I have to add to Ayespy's comprehensive answer is that on a Mac, you do a Cmd-Click instead of a Ctrl-Click. Using Cmd-Click or middle mouse button click is so much more efficient than using the right click menu, especially if you want to open multiple links in background tabs.
