Solved Vivaldi does not remember custom selected image/background for theme.
-
Same for me, @ap0st0lβ¦

I think the problem here lies with editing the default themes, and these might be overwritten/reverted on update and possibly for other reasons.
I would recommend that instead of editing a default theme, to make a copy. You do this by selecting a theme, and clicking the New Theme button. A copy will be made and you can edit the name. This new theme will be "yours" and should not be overwritten or reverted.
Now, it might be argued that it is a bug and that for instance if a default theme is edited, it should automatically make a copy of it with a new name to avoid this problem.

I have the same issue. For me, it seems like I can pick an image and it works at first, but as soon as I close and reopen the browser it stops working, and I can never select that same image again until I pick something else, restart the browser, and then go back to the first image. Feels like a caching issue or something to me.

Just had to change PCs, as my beloved Win7 machine finally died. So this is a new install of Vivalidi.
I set the background image to one I normally use and like. Fine. Later I opened the browser, the entire background is a glaring bright RED??
I guess it had, despite being a new install, updated and reverted back to the glaring red thing of redness and eyestrain? OK.. changed it back to my fav pic...
It's just gone bright RED!! again? WTF?
How do I get thing thing to leave my image alone and to keep it, to stop changing it?
It can't be updating that often??
-
@biggly Here, whatever is set just stays set. Period. Can't get it to change between sessions. Do you perchance use any extensions?
-
@ayespy Yes, a few, and it occurs to me this has happened, before, so I searched my post history...
Seems this still hasn't been fixed?
I have followed the advice on the end of that threat, creating a new theme. Let's hope it's fixed it. For all I know that's what I did last time on the other PC, dunno, can't remember, but it's the exact same problem. Hopefully this will be the same fix...
-
@biggly Custom selected background image, on 9 computers with 25 instances of Vivaldi, just stays selected. Not sure there is a "this" to fix. Yes, the theming protocol was substantially changed recently and for SOME users, this did lose their background image, one time, until the user properly set under the new protocol. This should not still be happening to anyone.

I had noticed this too with 5.2.2623.39 (Stable channel) (64-bit) on Win 8.1. My observations are:
- Speedial background is reset to Red every time Vivaldi is restarted UNLESS the restart is the result of a minor update.
- Although the previous background image and its directory is not remembered for the purpose of displaying it, Vivaldi knows what it was and REFUSES to display it (= does nothing).
- In looking at 2, I can scroll the list of available images and SEE the image I want appears on the far right and shows a TICK mark, but Vivaldi still does not actually display it.
- What I do is select another image, which Vivaldi is happy with until closed down. On restarting with a RED background of course I can now select the Background image I really want.
It may help to know that the image I am selecting is stored in C:\Users\Gerard\Pictures\Desktop Backgrounds and is one of 13 images used in sequence for my Win 8.1 screen background slideshow.
When both Windows and Vivaldi are using the same background, the window frame becomes invisible. ( Simple things please simple minds! )
One of the backgrounds I use is 4000 x 3000 pixels at 180 dpi with 24 bit depth and is 6.74 Mb
The other is 2288 x 1712 pixels at 300 dpi with 24 bit depth and is 1.28 Mb
Both images display perfectly, when allowed to load! The only extension I have is the Savefrom net helper, which was loaded using the Chameleon extension which allows the use of Opera extensions. ( Savefrom did not have a Vivaldi version )

@geetee I noticed point #2 as well, I could see but not select the image I wanted, without selecting something else first.
I also noticed when trying to change it back, it initially opened the last folder that opened when I was uploading something.
Why would it be looking in that folder?
-
My guess is that modifying the default themes causes it in some cases (updates etc?) to revert to the default or bug out in some way. I recommend instead making a copy of the theme you want to work with. They don't really document this well unfortunately.
https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/appearance-customization/browser-themes/To make a copy just click New Theme when with another theme selected and you can edit the title. I've never had an issue with updates changing my theme with snapshot receiving several updates a week at times.
-
@pathduck Well it hasn't done it since creating a copy and calling it MyTheme, so fingers and toes crossed...
-
@biggly I am no expert, but I know Windows has a builtin mechanism for listing the most recently used folder(s) and file(s). I have seen this unwanted behavior in many programs other than Vivaldi. Thus I deduce that Vivaldi uses this 'Last Used' folder as the starting point for the Get more background images dialog.
My next question is whether the background is intended to be persistent, or if we are expected to change it every time? If persistent, then the file and path should be stored somewhere in Vivaldi's settings.
For example the location of Downloads and the location of Screen captures is configurable and changeable via the Tools/Setting menu. These operations always use the stored values, not the Most recently used folder.I see PathDuck has made some suggestions. I will try them in due course.

Found this forum after my background started disappearing after PC restarts.
Recently updated from version 4 to the 5 (5.3.2679.58 (Stable channel)), and not realizing what a profile was, accidently completely wiped the one I had, and had to create a new one. Not sure if the profile thing is related to it.
Also don't think the image itself was the problem, it's the same one I've used previously (also on the same monitor) without issue. I did also notice the folder change every time I re-select the image, so it seems like it may be a cause. -

Creating a new theme seems to have resolved the issue. -
any luck on solving this? bug still present in version 5.5.2805.44 (Stable channel) (64-bit). so I was forced to update from some 2.6.something version where background image was working fine but some sites weren't. after update, all my autofill data was deleted - thanks a lot buds! but the custom background image doesn't seem to be saved properly. it might be saved for some time but in the end it will eventually disappear. opening multiple windows of Vivaldi also seems to break it.
soooo how the hell am I supposed to be happy about this? that's why I discarded all the updates for years because any update will ALWAYS break something down as if there's no QA team at all. every update is an insult! each time it gets worse and worse.
please provide proper fix for this issue ASAP because this makes me sick. creating new theme DOES NOT fix the issue. how come you break down such a simple, basic thing??? if you are bad at hiring skilled enough programmers, choose some other things to do instead of software development!

@shaihkritzer
Hi, what do you expect if you update from such an old version?
My custom background image stays forever, there is no bug.
The themes system change several times since version 2 or 3, get familiar with the new system and it will work.https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/appearance-customization/browser-themes/
Cheers, mib

@shaihkritzer Welcome to the QA team. Vivaldi releases multiple Snapshots before the next Stable Release, and we test it for bugs and regressions.
I am unable to reproduce the alleged bug.

nobody warned me about this makes any difference. anyway it doesn't work when I disable background image, choose any other image and then come back to my needed image. which results in: the issue exists no matter of updating from old/new version or independent install.
I assume there are some unknown limitations according to the specific image/file. since the same file was working fine in 2.6.something version, the easiest way to fix this is to revert any background image related changes back to v. 2.6.something.

does that mean I am writing imaginary things?

@shaihkritzer
I can understand your frustration but if nobody can use itΒ΄s own background images in Vivaldi the forum would explode and short after Vivaldi.
What you can try:
In your old theme choose "New".
A copy of your theme is created.
Check if the image work there.
I am not aware of any limits for the background images, not supported file formats will simply not work.Cheers, mib

No. It just means that it is not an issue that affects me, and I assume most users, because if it was, we would know about previous threads on the topic.
What it implies is that the problem is at your end. Reinstalling may be the quickest way to resolve the issue.
