Whatsapp web on web panel became extremely slow
-
Greetings,
I'm looking for help resolving this very specific issue:
Suddenly Whatsapp's web version in desktop mode that I use for web panels became extremely slow and unresponsive, and I cannot find a reason to blame for it. Everything from the text cursor selecting the typing area to image pasting is taking upwards of 15 seconds on a decent desktop. I cannot observe this behavior on other web panels or even whatsapp web in a normal tab.I already cleared my download queue which seemed to help with pasting images in the chat, but it's still very sluggish.
I've deleted and recreated the webpanel.
My vivaldi installation is up to date, but the issue did not come up immediately after an update.
Tried in a private window without extensions. Thanks in advance

2022 still the same issue, WhatsApp Web is basically unusable in the Web Panel. Ramps up the CPU and freezes the app within the panel. Using it in a normal web page doesn't cause this issue.
OS: Fedora 36 5.18.19-200.fc36.x86_64
Vivaldi: 5.4.2753.40 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit) -
I have the same issue. I really hope it gets fixed, since Whatsapp web as a web panel is quite useful and at the moment is completely unusable.
-
Same issue still - any solutions for this?
-
@crossLain Do you have videos playing in whatsapp chats?
Check vivaldi://gpu , copy and post here with </> button.
-
@Yukora @crossLain Is it really only the whatsapp tab or some extensions causing cpu exhaustion, too?
Please start Vivaldi's task manager withShift Esc
und check. -
@DoctorG I see just WhatsApp panel climbing to 150 in CPU, nothing else comes closes. Stutters and gets stuck constantly, pretty unusable
-
On my VM (VirtialBox, VMWare gpu driver, 2 CPU) with Debian 11 i get 9-22% CPU usage with a video and 6% up to 32% while scrolling .
I guess that's because my Vivaldi in this emulated environment has no GPU hardware acceleration.@Yukora I do not know if extensions can affect your web panels.
When does that happen? Which action do you start when such happens?
-
@DoctorG Pretty much anything, clicking on a chat kills it for example
-
@Yukora Which OS and Desktop Environment?
GPU drivers up-to-date from manufacturer website or OS maintainer?
Which Vivaldi version?
Installed extensions?
Antivirus/Malware scanner? -
@DoctorG
Vivaldi 5.4.2753.40
PC, Windows 10
extensions: Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin, Twitch Adblock, LastPass
No special antivirus installed
GPU up to dateDisabling all extensions and restarting Vivaldi did not help, still stutters and freezes so probably not related
-
@Yukora And why do you post in a Linux forum?
-
@Yukora I guess one of your installed extension costs much CPU.
Try in a new test profile without any settings and extensions (close Welcome page when it appears).

For some reason it doesn't let me to post the logs. As Yukora mentioned, simply clicking the chat or opening the smiley gallery freezes the panel, makes it basically unusable. No other app causes anything similar. And only within the web panel, opening the app in a normal tab does not cause any issues. It's weird.

@DoctorG Sorry came here from a google search but I saw this issue on windows forum too (https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/49161/100-cpu-usage-on-web-panel-use-whatsapp-web)
Like I mentioned - tried with no extensions, still reproduces

Since a couple of updates ago, I have noticed that when using WhatsApp in the Vivaldi sidebar it is extremely slow, even Vivaldi itself is extremely slow.
I have a Windows 11 computer, with Core i7 8 core processor and 16 GB RAM, SSD 480, all applications run fine but Vivaldi is slow, I think every time they put more features they make it slow, I even re-downloaded Opera to try WhatsApp in its panel and it works perfectly.I uninstalled Sophos antivirus to see if it was the fault of the antivirus, but the problem persists, I do not know what the problem is or if they already realized how slow is Vivaldi lately.

I've been experiencing the same problem on macOS; it seems weird that it's much faster when I try WA Web in a new tab. Even opening the context menu for a message (that thing that lets you reply or delete etc.) takes up to 100% of my CPU in the panel, whereas only a maximum of 25% on a tab. My Mac may be extremely sluggish, but this is still rather ridiculous.
