How can we remove Bing from Vivaldi?
-
it’s quite annoying seeing that Bing comes by default on Vivaldi, and even more annoying seeing that it seems almost impossible to remove it from the settings - how can we do it definitively, and prevent it to be restored in upgrades, even from “Restore Default Search Engines”?
-
If you don't like Bing, then set another search engine as your default. Then you can delete Bing.

NO you can't Einstein, because that one is ghosted out. God Bing sucks almost as bad as Microsoft.
What you CAN do however is edit what "Bing" means. So just put yahoo.com or whatever you want in there. It would seem that's a workaround, though I admit I'm not 100% confident in that either.
Frankly I'll probably delete Vivaldi despite otherwise liking it precisely for this reason. Also requiring a "capcha" every time you post is asinine as well.
-
None of the removal buttons are "ghosted out" here. You can remove any search engine you wish.
Captcha is only required for your first three posts. This saves us from literally hundreds of spam posts. Once you're a verified user, you don't have to do it again.

The default search engine is greyed out, which is why you have to set another one as the default before you can delete it. Vivaldi has to have a default search engine.

@nitrofurano Just was exited about the latest version of Vivaldi and indeed i run into the same problem, even if i have selected a different search engine, bing is still there in the address field.
bummer... -
@Neljor have you done what Pesala said?

Why do people freak out about things like this? What's it matter if it's there and you never use it? It's not wasting GB's, it's not slowing the system down, it's not getting in the way if you're doing a search. You can get rid of the nickname if you think your fingers might accidentally press b search term, you can move to the bottom of the list.
Even if it was hardcoded and not removable (which it's not and you can), it's seems a lot of angst towards something so insignificant.
It's not like it's a UI element that's in your face and gets in the way everytime you look at a menu etc.
FWIW i've got 4 other searches listed in mine that i have never used, but not once have i spent a second to think about removing them seeing as they don't bother me.
But as is mostly the case, people freak out without spending the 2mins to check the options to see what can be done before surmising that Microsoft is out to take over the world...
Reminds me of a poster at the Maxthon forum. Got angry at me for pointing out that they could have spent a few mins pressing a few buttons to fix a "lost option", instead made longwinded post and waited 24+hrs for a response.
Ahhh, good times...

No problem removing Bing. I left Ecosia and Qwant as using them would give a few cents to Vivaldi if I use them.
It does make sense to remove unused search engines because it makes the right-click search with submenu shorter and therefore quicker to navigate.
-
I have deleted from the beginning all the search engines that I do not use without problems, I have never seen them again since I use Vivaldi. I really do not understand the problem presented here.

“Restore Default Search Engines”?
That will definately readd the default engines wheter you like them or not. You can select to not touch your custom engines tho.
It happened years ago, way before the 2.x versions, that an update readded a default search engine after I altered it, so I had 2 of the same search engines, but I never experienced that again. -

I think it's more than likely a case of not understanding the way the search engine settings UI works, or a very small possibility it's a random glitch.
The fact the delete (minus) button is greyed out for the default search is probably a little confusing. If it stays enabled and you get a warning when clicking it if trying to remove the default search, it might be a little more transparent.
Also initially i forgot to press the save button after unchecking the default box, then wondering why the changed settings weren't sticking. Possibly a carry over from windows10 settings where most things stick after a change not requiring a dedicated save button action.
So more than likely user error.

This post is deleted! -
@7twenty I was starting to get annoyed at your preachy post, but then, I see your point now because though Bing is still there and greyed out, I do have Ecosia as my default on one computer, DuckDuckgo on another, and Oceanhero on yet another. Bing quietly co-exists on the machine. As long as I can choose a different default, I am ecstatic! So, it is pointless to freak out over its existence. I say out of sight and out of mind. As long as I have my default engine, I am a happy camper! I am good with that!
-
@musicollector , I don't get it, I had no problem removing Bing, Google, Yahoo etc. from the search engine list
-
Default search engines can't be deleted. If Bing is set as your default search at the moment, then first choose another default search engine and then delete Bing.
Hope this helps. -
Well I have to say:
It is driving me crazy. Although I removed Bing in the options and set google to default sometimes Vivaldi just does not give a duck. I dont get it... I know it sounds silly, but its a reason for me not to use Vivaldi anymore... In the one second everything is normal and Vivaldi uses Google, but then suddenly it searches with Bing??? For real?? -
@nurnico Did you try what jane.n said?
It is really very simple. Settings, Search, enable a safe search engine like Ecosia or DuckDuckGo as your default and delete Bing.
-
@nurnico Vivaldi does not intentionally do this. If Bing is added back as your default search engine without your doing, then it is a bug.
But! Keep in mind that private windows have a separate default search engine, and if you create new user profiles in Vivaldi those probably start with default settings.
-
Goodness! Just been through this hell of having Bing as the default search engine.
What is wrong with Vivaldi putting Bing as the default search engine? Are they getting paid?
I came to Vivaldi on the basis of one of Titus Tech videos but I was going to message him for recommending Vivaldi when it has such an annoying initial feature.
Had I not found this thread, I would have left Vivaldi. Goodness, I feel pretty narked by it!
Absolutely hate Bing!
Get rid!
