Why is the side panel not fully resizeable??
-
ist der a special reason? one should have the option to resize it to a very narrow state.
-
I don't think time should be wasted on useless features. The minimum size of about 220 pixels is fine. If you want it smaller, just close it. At least there should be enough space for the search field and the buttons at the top of the panel for adding and editing bookmarks.

a minimum fixed size is useless and should be removed.
everybody has different displays and priorities.treating suggestions as useless is not helpful.

A minimum size has a purpose, it is not useless. It prevents users getting the side panel into a state like this (Opera 12.17) where it cannot be used without resizing it.

so the user notices they've done something dumb and hopefully never does it again, what's wrong with that? Why do we need protection from our own mistakes?

It makes a product easier to support if new users cannot do something dumb. Most of us can figure it out for ourselves, and it's impossible to make anything completely idiot-proof, but there's no point implementing a change to make the browser harder to use and harder to support unless there is a real benefit, which there is not.
I spend a lot of time helping users, and even someone with 15 years of experience is quite capable of losing the side panels (in PagePlus, but it's the same kind of feature). I see such questions almost daily.
One might make a case for reducing the minimum panel width to 200* or perhaps 150 pixels, and there's probably some way to hack that value already, but what would be the point of a panel of less than 100 pixels as that in my screen shot? In Opera 12.17 it's possible to make it so small that it's difficult to tell whether the panels are open or closed.
If you want more space for reading the page, then just close the panel altogether — you only need to press F4 — or toggle the bookmarks off (F6 default).
- Actually the default width is only about 188 pixels, 220 pixels includes the Panel Toolbar.

I actually don't care much about the panel feature - I hardly use it. But I hate it when I am "protected" from learning from my mistakes, or restricted for no apparent reason. It's one reason why I stopped using Windows years ago.
-
One way to improve it would be to make it snap shut if resized below a certain threshold, The current minimum width is about right, but it could be a bit less if it snapped closed below that value.
PagePlus used to do that, but the threshold was too low (about 60 pixels), so it could still be left in a useless state, although it was much less likely for users to be baffled by accidentally resizing it to almost nothing.

isnt this the whole point of vivaldi, to be an alternative to those foolproof not configurable other browsers??
and yes there is a benefit. i could have the bookmark bar on the side, without using screenspace, resizing the panel so only the icons are shown (like im using it since a decade with opera).
since after a year of development, the "real" bookmark bar still isnt available to be put on the side.there are different ways to protect it from disappearing if it is dragged before disappearing,
like an option "minimum web panel size" or similar. or just put the fracking minimum to 20px or something..
