After starting Vivaldi in incognito mode, trying to open a regular window fails.
-
I add -incognito to my shortcut to open Vivaldi and do most of my browsing incognito. When I need saved logins and such, I use Ctrl-N to open a non-incognito window.
This worked for the longest time, and recently (not sure when) stopped working. Trying to open a new normal window gives me a gray box (no menus or anything) with a gray Vivaldi logo in the middle. I have to quit Vivaldi altogether to get rid of it.
More Testing: If I open Vivaldi with the regular shortcut, that loads fine. Also, from there I can open new regular and incognito windows no problem.
I also moved the default profile out of the folder for a "fresh start," and the behavior is the same.
Summary: For some reason, when starting Vivaldi in incognito mode, trying to open a regular window fails.
Thanks.

@vivaldiuser835
I can verify this with open private window from desktop shortcut.
The box looks like a Windows 7 window.
Did you post this issue a few days ago?
Iirc I try to reproduce but I cant.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin
I have never posted this issue before. just to confirm, you were able to reproduce my issue, correct?Additional find: When trying to open Settings from the Incognito window, I get a gray window without the logo.

Bug report submitted. VB-88207 -
Version: 5.2.2623.26 (Stable channel) (64-bit) on Windows 10 with no extensions installed
Problem: Vivaldi “New Window (non-private)” command does not open properly if Vivaldi is initially started using a “New Private Window” command. Aside, Vivaldi seems a bit sluggish in general too.
Steps to reproduce the problem (GIF image):
- On a fresh install of Vivaldi (no extensions installed) pin the Vivaldi shortcut on the windows taskbar and then close all open Vivaldi windows
- Right click the Vivaldi icon on taskbar > click ‘New Private Window’
- Now open a ‘New Window’ either using Vivaldi icon menu or keyboard shortcut Ctrl + N
- The ‘New Window’ comes up as a blank / non-responsive - can not even close the window. You will have to close window by using right click context menu on the taskbar icon.
- Once all Vivaldi windows are closed, now you can open a ‘New Window’ instance of Vivaldi. The same blank/non-responsive window opens briefly but then starts working after a few seconds.
- Interestingly, if you were to start the Vivaldi initially via opening a ‘New Window’, then open a ‘New Private Window’, close the original ‘New Window’, and try to open the ‘New Window’ again, the problem does not occur
- This problem only seems to occur when the initial instance of Vivaldi opened is a ‘New Private Window’

@sudouser Welcome to the Vivaldi Community
As you can see, a bug report for this issue has already been submitted, and I've merged the topics. I'm sure they're aware of this problem and are working on a fix
Great writeup though - with a screen recording and clear steps to reproduce, well done

Background conditions: Running latest Desktop Minor Update, 5.2.2623.33, on Win 10 21H2 current as of 4/12/22 releases. Vivaldi is installed on a per-user basis, with profiles, app, etc. in each user's %localappdata% folder hierarchy.
This bug was introduced with Release 5.2.
Symptom is that with a Vivaldi window aleady open in incognito mode (via the "--incognito" Chromium browser standard command-line parameter), subsequently attempting to open a "non-incognito" regular Vivaldi window (viz., with no "--incognito" parameter on its command line, e.g., via the desktop or Start Menu links created during installation) does open a Vivaldi application window.
However, the latter window is only a grey background with the large Vivaldi icon in the middle center of the window, what normally appears briefly whenever Vivaldi is launched except in this case, the app hangs there. The rest of the Vivaldi window (Bookmarks bar, Address bar, Tabs, Menu Bar, Status bar, etc.) never open, no matter how long the wait.
No way to close the 'stuck' window except at the Windows 10 OS level. Selecting Appearance.Use_Native_Window in Settings does provide a standard Win 10 title bar that can also be used to close the stuck Vivaldi edition.
The incognito window opens and operates as expected with full browsing, settings, etc.
Closing the incognito window and launching "non-incognito" regular Vivaldi again produces the desired and expected result, with the application opening fully with all bars displayed and browsing enabled. Ditto opening a regular Vivaldi window without first opening an incognito Vivaldi window.
OS is latest fully patched Win 10 21H2 running Win Defender with all Vivaldi permissions unchanged since before release 5.2.
Did not report the bug when first encountered as fault isolation was still underway, complicated by no Win event errors thrown by the stuck Vivaldi instance and no other error messages, just the hung "non-incognito" Vivaldi window.
Deleting and recreating settings, settings changes, profiles, caches, etc. has no effect on the bug. Reinstallation of 5.2 and subsequent minor releases of Vivaldi has no effect.
Tonight's installation of the latest minor release, 5.2.2623.33, afforded an opportunity for fresh exploration as the regular Vivaldi window opened upon installation, suggesting the problem was not with the current settings or profiles, etc. as those would be expected to affect the vanilla install if any of those were the source of the fault.
The bug is now eminently reproducible across multiple Windows PCs running different editions of Win 10.
Have been watching for this bug to be reported but haven't seen any mention yet.

After starting Vivaldi with the new hidden tab first, it remains on the blank page when the new tab is opened on it. Has anyone experienced this issue in the latest version?

@erkan said in The problem of getting stuck on a Vivaldi blank page:

What does that mean?

Up until a few weeks ago this was by far the best browser i ever used.. Now sadly its letting me down... Opening the first instance works fine... when you close it it takes about five attempts to reopen, and sits on the big V logo screen loading for about 3 mins... its the same when i have it open and attempt to open a private window it sits loading and doesnt actually ever load..
Ive not got it set to load any previous tabs, so cant see thats the issue like other people have had.this is the version i am running 5.2.2623.39 (Stable channel) (64-bit) on Windows 10 ...
Ive reinstalled and still have the same issue... I really hope you guys get it sorted because the other browsers dont even come close .

i'm using win 7. I right-click the vivaldi icon on the taskbar and open it with the new hidden window. When I try to open a new window from the taskbar without turning off incognito mode, vivaldi hangs on the blank page.

If I first open a private Vivaldi session, it becomes impossible to open a standard Vivaldi session.
A grey windows with V of the Vivaldi logo opens, and stays so indefinitly.
Nothing else is displayed, there is nothing to be clicked in it.
The only thing you can do are to resize it (mouse), or close the window (task bar).Vivaldi last known version (win10)
Deleted the only one extension (whatfont)
Changed theme (return to standard)
→ No change. It does not happen when a standard Vivaldi is opened first.
I did not notice that behaviour before those last days, I just changed the theme recently but it does not seem to be the cause (I came back to standard with no positive result).
Known problem ? Thanks for any help
-
@oneohhsix None of this happens here. Do you have ANY kind of 3rd party security or anti-malware software?
-
Same here.
The splash screen shows and stays indefinitly. So waiting a few seconds as suggested in other posts (or even minutes / hours) won't help. Besides the splash screen nothing else is displayed, not even icons for minimizing or closing the windows. Window can be resized though.
Same thing for the setup menu, when trying to open it out of the private window. This is probably not theme related, because I didn't do any changes and it stopped working anyways - I'd rather expect the latest update to be the origin of the problem.
I just found out with this post, that the browser seems to work fine when opening the standard vivaldi window before private one. So thank you P2A.
