Solved Panel covers Facebook menu
-
@wordmonger Hello and Welcome to the Vivaldi Community
Did you have a look in Settings > Panels?
"Floating Panel" - and it's not enabled by default so you must've changed it. Or perhaps accidentally hit a hotkey to toggle it (which is also not active by default). -
That was the first thing I did, and floating panel is not selected.
-
Plus, it doesn't happen on other pages. For example. if the same thing were happening in Yahoo Mail, the menu showing different folders would be covered, but it's not.
-
Oh! I just realized that in a group I admin on FB, the admin's menu quite rightly appears to the right of the panel instead of being covered by it.
So apparently it's ONLY the newsfeed menu that's affected.
Definitely a Facebook bug, then (I never thought otherwise, to be honest), but perhaps Vivaldi's techs are more accommodating than Facebook's to try and fix the problem?

@wordmonger Hi, you've made screenshots of everything else, maybe make a screenshot of the actual FB issue? It might help understand what you're seeing on your system
-
Hmm... For some reason I'm now getting an error message when I try to paste in or upload an image. Maybe I've used up my quota of screenshots...
-
@wordmonger Just resize the image a bit before pasting, there's a size limit. Or use an upload service like Imgur or similar and use the Image Link button to post it.
-
Trying again, then.
FB newsfeed with panel open:
Yep, that worked!
FB with panel closed. Newsfeed now has the menu with my groups and things on the left.
-
@wordmonger It just looks like the site adapting to the smaller display size with the panel open. It's pretty common for websites to fluidly adapt to the size of what can be displayed horizontally.
The stuff you're missing is probably hiding under some button. Try clicking your user icon on top right for instance?

Ha ha, got this reply on another group and it worked:
As you say: 'Previously the FB window just adapted in size to match the screen space'. I think it's precisely still doing that; however, their opinion of whether there's enough space for the left-side menus has changed.
This might be because of something you (or your system) did; like, you might have inadvertently dragged your default browser window to be a few pixels narrower. Or a Vivaldi update might have added one pixel of border somewhere. FB does these calculations where they add up all their bits and decide if there's enough room. In the end, the final decision looks something like: 'I've got 970 pixels of available width, and my stuff needs 965 pixels, so we're good'. But if you made the window 6 pixels narrower, kaboom, now it doesn't fit.
I bet if you zoom out one notch, that menu will spring back to life. But things will be too small. That's just an effective demo of how the calculations come out.
To be clear, the most likely culprit is probably FB, because they constantly fiddle with everything. If you were 1 pixel away from 'not enough room', and some Fancy Graphic Designer decided that instead of 1.3 kilometers of blank space on each side of the News Feed, it required 1.3km + 1 pixel, well, there you go.
So I changed my zoom from 85% to 80% and bingo! The menu popped out from under the panel.

@wordmonger That's good, I kind of suspected as much and the screenshot showed what was happening. In the future remember to post images of issues, it's usually much easier to understand, and saves everyone some time trying to decipher someone talking about a website they don't even use
If you're constantly having to change zoom and resize stuff I suggest you just keep the panels closed when not needed, it's not much effort to just press F4 or click the button to show them again when needed.

If I had realized I could paste in screenshots I would have done it from the start. I'm not used to it being possible in this kind of forum.
