Bug: new tab opens in the wrong window
-
Hi, a fix is being tested on the Snapshot version so this should be resolved soon. If any of you run into this issue while using Snapshot, please let us know.
-
I am also having this problem.

@doctorg Vivaldi 5.0.2497.48 (Stable channel) (64-bit) in Windows 10.
It took me a minute to recreate the bug because I wasn't entirely sure what was causing it, but after testing (and careful re-reading of @Hatlelol's comment, I can reproduce it consistently.
You have to have the other window selected. The new tab opens in whatever window you last clicked in, not counting the "new tab" button.
If focus is on window A and you click the "new tab" button in window B in the tab bar without first clicking somewhere else in window B, the new tab opens in window A.
Is that reproducible for you?

Not on Windows 11.
-
Interesting. I was just able to reproduce it under Linux. (5.0.2497.32 stable 64 bit, GalliumOS 3.1, based on Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic.

This is still happening to me on the latest stable on Windows
-
Have the same problem, also on the latest stable Vivaldi on Windows 10.
Same scenario - two or more windows, click on new tab button [+] but it'd open on the last active window instead the one you click on.However it's not 100% reproducible for me. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Usually doesn't happen right away after starting the browser.
Still trying to find a way to reliably reproduce the bug. -
I've been having this issue as well, for over a month. I noticed it happening after one of the updates in December, but since I wasn't thinking straight, I did not record when the issue started occurring.
If I'm opening a tab with CTRL+T, it's not a problem because I'm usually in the window I want to open the tab in, but if I decide, for whatever reason, to click on the new tab button to open a new tab, the new tab opens in the last active window and not the window I clicked the button in.
-
I was having the same issue for almost a month now. Today I updated the browser (I only update it once a month) and now the button works fine. It doesn't matter which window is selected, the new tab will open on the window where I pressed the + button. I'm using Windows 10.
-
I am also having this problem. Vivaldi 5.0.2497.48 (64-bit) on Windows 10 2004 (OS is managed by our IT company, I can't update it). I can reproduce it exactly as @86vy6xm8 describes.
-
There's been a change in the windows management code (so to speak) recently, so perhaps it's related to that. However, I'm unable to reproduce that issue here. Tried opening a bunch of tabs in two windows, using both for a while, and the new tab button opens a new tab in the correct window every time - regardless of which window had the focus (tested in Vivaldi 5.0.2497.48 64-bit on Windows 10 ver. 21H2).
Is anyone able to provide reliable reproduction steps? If we can reproduce it here, I'll take it to the developers. Thanks in advance!
-
I can't give steps to reproduce it but experiencing the same, sometimes.
For me this issue only appears after some time (always paired with massive slowdown of the browser, like opening new tabs takes 5-15 seconds, but the slowdown can appear without the tab problem)
When I restart the browser, the issue is gone for a while. -
@prandur Perhaps a poor system performance is a contributing factor. I sometimes work with 2 or even 3 Vivaldi installations running simultaneously, each with a couple of its windows opened, but I haven't ever experienced any real slow-downs - maybe that's why I never saw a tab opening in the wrong window.
-
@pafflick it's not poor system performance for me, just poor Vivaldi performance.
And yes the same goes for me, I usually have 2-4 windows open with anywhere between 80 and 400 tabs.
If the issue comes up and I close and restart the browser everything is fine again for some time (I'd estimate between 2 to 6 hours of beeing continuously open) until the performance issues come up again and with them sometimes the issue/bug of tabs opening in the wrong window. (also it comes sometimes with freezes in the tab list. This is like, the 3rd tab is in focus and when switch to the 5th the content changes but the tab list still has the 3rd tab highlighted).
The issues started for me with updating to 5. -
I had the same issue 2 versions ago, then I installed the latest 5.0.2497.48 (Stable channel) (64-bit) and the issue has been solved for me (win 10).
-
@prandur Perhaps the poor performance is caused by the way the browser is being used. As I said, I'm not experiencing any of this, despite using Vivaldi quite extensively. Though - on the other hand - I don't use too many extensions (usually I keep only 5-7 active at a time), and I don't open that many tabs (~70 at most, but usually between 20-30 in each browser). But there are many ways in which a browser can be clogged, like a poorly written website or extension, 3rd-party programs interfering, etc.
Anyway, in order to address the issue, a reliable method of reproducing it would have to be established first. I'll try asking the devs if it could be investigated, as it seems to be connected with the recent window-handling changes, but I can't promise if they'll be able to find the culprit with this little information about the issue.

@pafflick I've been having this issue for a while now, but never realized how inconsistently it happens until I purposefully tried to reproduce it. However, there is another way I see the issue occur aside from clicking the + for a new tab.
- From an active Vivaldi window use
Ctrl + n
to open a new window - Do NOT click on the new window. Just type any URL and hit Enter.
- The webpage opens in the previous Vivaldi window instead of the new window.
Honestly, even these steps don't reproduce the bug consistently, but - at least for me - they usually do. It seems like this is a problem with race conditions where the correct active window is not always set before the information is accessed. I should mention I'm running Vivaldi 5.0.2497.38 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit) in Ubuntu 20.04. Hope this helps because this bug is driving me bonkers.

Chiming in to say that I've been experiencing the same bug since December. It happens when I try to open a new tab in a vivaldi window while another vivaldi window is active.
I'm on 5.0.2497.48 and using Windows 10.
