DuckDuckGo wants to create their own browser. Why not improve Vivaldi instead?
-
@thebestpessimist Ooooh, interesting! As a KDE Plasma user, i naturally love pseudo-infinite choice, so the prospect of another browser candidate pleases not bothers me. Otoh...
The browser won’t be based on Chromium, the open-source version of Google Chrome, like most popular alternative web browsers (including Brave, Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi). DuckDuckGo will instead use the rendering engine provided by the operating system it’s running on, just like the existing mobile apps — which should be Edge Chromium (WebView2) on Windows and WebKit (Safari) on macOS. DuckDuckGo says “early tests have found it significantly faster” than Chrome, and using the operating system’s own engine means DuckDuckGo won’t be responsible for quickly patching security vulnerabilities, but it also means the browser won’t be as feature-packed as Chrome or Edge.
- No mention of Linux, so bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
- Not "feature-packed", so bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
-
Exactly: so my question holds even more ground: Why not make Vivaldi better?
Both Vivaldi and DuckDuckGo teams want to make the internet better and safer for the consumer (you and me), so this cooperation makes so much sense.
Vivaldi has the "user customization levels", so lvl 0 (very few features are enabled for the user) is perfect for what DuckDuckGo wants.
And this also means there's a Linux client for you.

@thebestpessimist Your heart seems to be in the right place [left kneecap, like me, right?], but ofc your aspiration will never see the light of day. Numerous reasons IMO, but arguably the primary one being V is now inextricably tied to the chromium engine, whereas this putative new DDG browser is implacably opposed to the chromium engine.
-
That's true, but i still think V team should ask D team if this is not a good idea. (Because to me it certainly is)
-
@thebestpessimist So, to clarify, you are advocating for formation of a VD Team?
-
I believe it's an idea worth pursuing. If the VD team will not be formed, maybe some good ideas will still come out of it. Or prospects for future joint work.
-
@guigirl Wouldn't a co-op between Viv and DDG be CoViD?
-
@thebestpessimist said in DuckDuckGo wants to create their own browser. Why not improve Vivaldi instead?:
I found out here, here and finally at the source itself that DuckDuckGo would like to create their own browser.
Wouldn't there be a better idea if Vivaldi team would partner with DuckDuckGo team and improve Vivaldi even more?
As far as I understand they do not want to fork chrome, but who knows, maybe you can convince them it's better to work together!
AMEN to this.
-
Not sure if amen. I for one like features, so D's approach does not appeal to me. Especially when uBlockOrigin exists for V, which covers all? that D's browser can bring to the table.

Look at the privacy invasive features Chrome has implement in the last year and Vivaldi went out of their way to exclude them. That alone should be enough to get DDG to at least rethink things.
-
@tbgbe I’ll be waiting for version 19.0 before I give that a try.
-
It is not a bad idea to use the rendering engine of the OS itself, this sure makes the browser extremely fast, but on the other hand it greatly limits the functionality it can have.
In any case, it will be a very good option to have it as a second browser, for quick consultations on the web or similar, where you only need a window with the search engine.
In this philosophy the Min browser already worked, a browser written entirely with CSS and JavaScript using Electron, and is open-source software, available on GitHub. taken to the minimum expression, but good privacy with ad and tracker blocking and which uses DDG by default as a search engine. -
@luetage Not necessarily. The innovative thing about this exciting new browser is that you don't need to go looking for it... it'll come & find you.
To all those who like a browser to auto-update, this one's even better... it quietly installs itself, then... takes care of business.

takes care of business.
You mean «it takes care to take you out of business», don't you?
-
I have reservations about DDG, and do not use them for anything anymore when possible.
-
Well, Vivaldi and DuckDuckGo are friends, but have different ideas on what browser they want. DuckDuckGo wants a simple one while Vivaldi is currently making one of the most customizable browsers ever.
-
@leo32345 , the philosophy about privacy is quite similar between Vivaldi and DDG, but we cannot forget that Vivaldi is dedicated to making a browser and DDG in the first line a search engine, they are different products.
If a company like DDG wants to also make a browser and do it without the Blink, Gecko and WebKit from scratch, they have no choice but to keep it simple and try to stay within the limitations offered by the renderers of the corresponding OS, not because they necessarily bet For the simple, because it would take many years to develop a very complex browser.
The alternative was to do it like MIN, the DIY browser that I mentioned earlier, which offers the user through scripts to add the functionalities they want to a very basic browser. -
Hi, an article from Digitaltrends mention DDG will use WebView/WebView2 for the browser. The article is not to interesting but there is a link explain what WebView/WebView2 is, this is very interesting.
