Questions about customizability (coming from opera 12)
-
Hello - I would first like to say thanks for all the hard work that is going into the development of Vivaldi browser, it is appreciated :side: I have been using Opera as my main browser for several years, and am still using 12.17 as my main browser. I know that Vivaldi is endeavoring among other things, to be the spiritual successor to Presto Opera, so I had a few questions about customization potential, I am not well-informed enough at this point to already have this information. I hopefully can use this thread ongoingly for future questions, I have just a couple at this point: - In Opera (12), when in customize appearance mode, buttons can be moved around by holding the alt key then dragging the button, will anything like this exist for Vivaldi? -Will there be a personal toolbar , that bookmarks can be dragged onto? -In Opera customize appearance mode there is a dialogue where various buttons can be chosen/placed on the toolbars (such as 'find-in-page', spacers, the various navigation buttons, among much else) will Vivaldi ever have something similar to this ability? -Customizable search.ini ? Would like to get some feedback on my questions, thanks alot, and again thanks for all the hard work on Vivaldi

The custimzzable UI is surely something that will come some time after the V1 release.
But you have to keep in mind that even if a pleasant and useful feature, something else has higher priority, just to say the mail client and the sync function
That said a lot can be already done, although through some file editing and not graphically, there is a dedicate thread with dozens of options and layouts posted by various users.

It's been made clear from day one here that Vivaldi will be every bit as malleable as Opera, though the exact technique used to customize this or that feature will usually differ due to the completely different kinds of technologies with which this browser is built.
Recently Jon and other crew have made it clear that buttons will be movable, selectable, de-selectable; colors and shapes will be available by independent design; and functions will be the subject of user choice. We just must remember this offering is being written from scratch, and has to be kept compatible on an ongoing basis with an ever-changing rendering engine which is designed and built by others. Opera took two decades to reach its 12.xx capabilities, when developers had total control over both the UI and the engine. Vivaldi is just over a year older than its initial public release.

Well, there's three kinds of customization:
- Visual form: piece of cake. Put anything you want anywhere you want, and make it look however you want.
- UI-level function: Code to accomplish the function must be written, and it may have to shake hands with the engine, which would add a layer of complexity. (for instance, do we use "native" context menu, or proprietary context menu? If native, native to the system, or to the rendering engine? How to interact with downloads? How to generate or move tabs to a new window? New tab, new window, or popup when this or that kind of popup is invoked? Private tabs or private window? Etc.)
Engine-level function: The most fraught. Only so much flexibility exists within Chromium before you are looking a branching and maintaining a whole separate branch of the code, and then you begin to enter the territory that was the doom of Presto.

Thanks for the replies gents, there is some encouraging information therein. Looks like Vivaldi is going to be my next browser, I'll have to start to work with it/build familiarity by degrees.
Thanks again for all the hard work :silly:
