Vivaldi suddenly stopped working
-
I was running Vivaldi 3.8 on Linux Mint 19.3, until it suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason. When run from the menu it doesn't even open a window, and when run from the terminal it dumps a list of errors.
-
@karolkozik123 In the terminal kill all Vivaldi processes with
killall vivaldi-bin
.
Then run V from terminal and post those errors here using </> so that Debian/Debian-based Linux users can take a look at them and maybe help you.If it is a crash and you are interested in reporting it to Vivaldi's devs you can follow this: https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/troubleshoot/reporting-crashes-on-linux/
-
@npro Thank you. I will post the errors in a separate comment.
-
@npro unfortunately, the forum keeps flagging my terminal log (posted using </> ) as spam. Don't really know what to do about it.
-
@karolkozik123 Ah, probably because your are a new user and your post count is very low. A moderator would know more.
Forgot to write that you may run the killall command with the -9 switch in case the vivaldi processes remained as zombies in the system, you can check for remaining entries with your System Monitor or via terminal
ps -eo pid,comm,etime,stat | grep -i vivaldi-bin
(... if you see a "Z" at the end it's such one) -
I keep trying to post the terminal log, but I keep getting "flagged as spam by Akismet.com". Does Vivaldi Forums share their user posts with a 3rd-party website? I'm getting increasingly worried, and frustrated by this.
As an addition, I'll reveal my specification: I'm running this on an Intel Core Duo T2350 @ 1.86GHz (i386). -

I see
OpenGL ES 2.0 is not supportable.
Maybe something was changed with Chromium 90. Try switching to a different backend like OpenGL 3.1 from your compositor settings and test again.
Also looks like you are using the 32-bit version of Vivaldi on an old system? Please provide analytical info about your browser and system specs next time, there have been some reports for the 32-bit version on Debian systems lately.
-
@zalex108 Thank you. A point of note: this after a reinstall of Vivaldi, downloaded straight from the website. I might have been using a slightly earlier version when the problem first occured.
-
You may also check with a Switch
--ignore-gpu-blocklist
Check to apply Switches from this Guide.

@npro Alright, I will try to, although I'm having a hard time figuring out how to do such a thing. Could you perhaps explain that more clearly? Regarding my system specs, yes, I'm running 32-bit Vivaldi on an older system.
Here some more details (sorry for not mentioning them earlier):- Vivaldi version: 3.8.2259.40
- Distro: Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia
- Desktop environment: MATE 1.22.2
- Kernel: 5.4.0-72-generic (i686)
- OpenGL renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 945GM x86/MMX/SSE2 version1.4 Mesa 20.0.8
- CPU: Intel Core Duo T2350 @ 1.86GHz (32-bit)
- Machine: MAXDATA ECO4510IW Laptop
(note: this isn't normally my main machine, but currently it's the only thing I can use)
(and sorry for replying so late)
-
@karolkozik123 What do you get in the terminal if you run V with the switch
--disable-gpu
?If you get the same message, try again but with the
--use-gl=desktop
switch. -
Video does not work on Manjaro KDE X11.
I cannot post code snippets here so here is my gist: https://gist.github.com/hrvoj3e/02b7849cbfa29ebfe72de88611bc7a4a
-
@hrv3ea Try video-modesetting instead of the intel drivers? You 'd better ask in the Manjaro forums on how to deal with very old gpus. (Mesa, etc.)
-
@npro Why? Intel driver work OK.
Only Vivaldi has this problem. Chrome and Firefox work OK.My GPU (
Intel® Iris® Plus Graphics
) is new - integrated into proc :Intel Core i7-1065G7
-
@hrv3ea said in Vivaldi suddenly stopped working:
Why? Intel driver work OK.
According to your need of running it with the switch
--ignore-gpu-blocklist
it does not. Especially if you use that switch with Chrome as well which you didn't mention. Firefox is irrelevant, as "different tech". And intel driver is known to not perform well in many cases. -
