Bug: vivaldi://startpage error appears when clicking on speeddial-link
-
The latest snapshot (3.8.2254.3) sometimes shows a temporary connection error.
It looks likevivaldi://startpage
is called instead of the link (or in addition). Then there is a message that the connection could not be established.
A little later the page is then opened.Update: I reported this bug: VB-78826
-
Am I the only one who experiences this issue?
It is happening not with all links, but i.e. with this forum-site, when open the site for the first time after browser-start.
-
@Gwen-Dragon I deactivated my custom.css and it still happens. I also started Vivaldi without open panel and it still happens. This is the message I took with video:
It appears for less then a second before open the site. In this case it is this forum. And the URL displayed in adressbar is without any
chrome://startpage/
, although the connection is that I used speeddial that is my startpage. The adress in the speeddial-item is
https://forum.vivaldi.net/recent
-
@Gwen-Dragon Yes I have updated, and the issue happens in both the new one and the predecessor.
-
@Gwen-Dragon said in vivaldi://startpage error appears when clicking on speeddial-link:
vivaldi --user-data-dir="/tmp/VIVTEMP"
This opens my stable, not the snapshot, although snapshot is set standard.
With
vivaldi-snapshot --user-data-dir="/tmp/VIVTEMP"
i could get the right one and it didn't happen!
-
@Gwen-Dragon It happens on Windows too. What can it be when I disabled my custom.css and custom.js? Extensions? I'll have a look on it.
Update:// I de-activated all extensions, but the problem continues to happen. It happens with any link, when clicking on it for the first time after Vivaldi-start.
All further links open without the issue from speeddial. So it has to do with the setting for startpage, not for new tab.

I can confirm this with the two most recent snapshot releases as well, on two different systems (Kubuntu and KaOS). Starting the browser with a clean profile does reduce the duration of the error page's appearance before the target begins to load, but doesn't stop it from still occuring. As far as bugs go it's rather minor, though admittedly it is frustrating to start each browser session with the sense that something's broken.
My gut tells me it's got something to do with proxy auto-detection or some friction in the DNS resolution, possibly related to my use of stubby to employ DoT with DNSSEC. Either way it's likely an adaptive process associated with traffic routing at play, since it's only ever an issue for the first non-local page load of a session. Opening the web portal to my Duplicati instance on port 8200 of the loopback as the first page load, for instance, shows no sign of the error, which will finally occur when/if I do eventually request a page served from another host. It's always back to business as usual, at least, after that first hiccup.
I was giving Vivaldi a pass since it was roughly contemporaneous with the rollout of KDE Plasma 5.21.4/KF5.81 which has been (pardon my French) a complete clusterf*ck in a myriad of ways. It would appear that's not the case though, as my experience could not more perfectly align with the OP's.

@Gwen-Dragon @juanvase @RogueScholar
The bug still exists, even in the new snapshot 3.8.2259.10.
It reminds me of another problem where it was about inserting a link in the address bar:
The field was not empty (as it should be), but occupied withvivaldi://startpage
.
This resulted in a bastardized URL, and the desired page could not be found.
The bug was fixed some time ago.
But there is still a certain preference to letvivaldi://startpage
play along when calling a link. -
@Gwen-Dragon
Heureka! I found it! This error comes into play only after I started the synchronization.
I don't know what exactly happens then, and why this error only appears in the last 3 snapshots, and fortunately not in the 3.7 stable so far.
The same error also appears when I do an (older) sync with a second account (that I had once created).
Even if I delete all bookmarks of the speed dial after pausing the sync, and then open an URL - also by direct input into the address bar - the error happens.
I.e. the sync process causes the error for me.
Any idea why it only affects 3 users in total so far? (Maybe there are some that have overlooked it)Update:
No that only seemed to be the source. But then I deinstalled all snapshot-folders and reinstalled the new version, then just select speed dial as startpage and after restart the bug happened again!
Clean profile, no modifications, no synchronization, no settings made (except startpage, panel right, close button left).Update 2: Another try with complete new installation and fresh profile. No modifications again, no synchronization. The links from speed dial open without bug, even when adding some new. I tested it with several restarts (about 7) and clicking on any speeddial buttons. No bug!
Then I synchronized Vivaldi and immediately the bug appears again.
@Gwen-Dragon could you please forward it to the bug-team? I miss the original mail for this Bug (VB-78826) so I can't answer it to them. Or is there another option for me to communicate directly with the team?

@Gwen-Dragon It is a pitty that with upgrading Vivaldi stable to 3.8 the snapshot bug is implemented in stable too.
There was a high probability that this would happen.
I have already reported it to the bug team. -
@Gwen-Dragon I had done exactly that with the latest snapshot. Just after login into synchronization the bug starts to appear.
This bug is happening since the latest 4 versions. I didn't add any extensions, just updated Vivaldi-snapshot (and now stable) and it started to happen.
I deleted the whole folders of snapshot (/opt/ and /.config/) and then installed a complete new Vivaldi.
As soon as I connected with sync-server the problem starts.I don't know what settings are stored at sync-server exactly. One way to check that would be to create a new account there.
But that is at least difficult as I have already 3 accounts and used my 3 mail-accounts for login and they would tell me the mail-account is already in use.
How could I delete one of the sync-accounts?BTW: If I would have to delete such account to get rid of the bug would be poor. It should be better programmed to avoid that when updates occure.

@Gwen-Dragon It's strange: I just changed the general settings from
homepage
tospeed dial
, and after that the bug disappeared.Strange because I had tried exactly this in the snapshot, but without effect.
At least in the new stable the bug is gone (for now?).
In the snapshot unfortunately not yet. -
@Gwen-Dragon This is a remnant of the extension that - as mentioned above - I had installed for a test and uninstalled right away.
Interesting:
Although I choseSpeeddial
and notcustom
, the old registered extension address still seems to cause the bug.
After I deleted the entry, the bug disappeared in the snapshot as well.So finally you gave me the hints to get this solved. Thank you!

@Gwen-Dragon It's me having the issue. How can I solve this issue? I just tried to delete the profile folder but when I enabled syncing the issue is there again.
And yes, when I remember right I tried an extension to modify the startpage and removed it because I wanted the original startpage from Vivaldi again.
-
@PoooMukkel What extension did you try? Are you sure it's removed?
What is your setting under Tabs > New Tab Page?
-
@Pathduck I can't remember what extension this was... But it is removed.
These are the settings for my startpage.
-
Tabs > New Tab Page?
-
@Pathduck Sorry...
-
@PoooMukkel OK. I think I was able to reproduce it by installing the FVD Speed Dial, setting it up, then uninstalling it, restarting and setting Vivaldi back to the standard Start Page.
It looks like it messes with the
Preferences
file in some unrecoverable way, but I've not been able to understand exactly what it changes when looking at the contents and comparing to a working backup. At this point I think your best option is to either:
- Reset your Default profile. This will lose all your bookmarks/history etc. so make sure to back it up first.
You can use Sync to backup your stuff before a profile reset, but some users say that it starts after enabling Sync, which leads me to think this broken setting gets synched as well. So better IMO to copy your bookmarks/history etc. back from the backup if you do that.
OR
- Close Vivaldi, then delete the file
Preferences
from the Default profile directory.
This will reset most of your settings but will keep your bookmarks/history etc working.
-
@Pathduck I will try and come back here... Thanks a lot so far!
