Solved Cursor in address field when starting Vivaldi?
-
I think I had Vivaldi configured to do that before I did a clean reinstall of Vivaldi. Now when I start Vivaldi, the cursor is not in the address field. Is that WAD and I'm misremembering how it used to work?
When I open a new tab (<Ctrl+T> or the + on a tab) the cursor is in the address field, but not when I start Vivaldi.
(If it matters, I have Speed Dial as my start-up screen.)
Vivaldi 3.5.2115.67 (Official Build) (64-bit)
OS Windows 10 OS Version 2009 (Build 19042.662) -
The fix is in 3.8 \o/ everybody rejoice! I can confirm it working as intended, thank you Vivaldi Team!

@wpcoe
Hi, check Settings > Tabs > Tab Handling > Focus Page Content ....
Some updates change settings but it is rare and this setting was not changed for me.
Anyway, good luck.Cheers, mib

I've reported this as:
(VB-74754) Keyboard focus is lost and no longer on URL Bar when Vivaldi starts upI hope it will be fixed before final, but not so sure it will now that we're at RC1 they will focus on major regressions.

Hi, check Settings > Tabs > Tab Handling > Focus Page Content ...."Focus Page Content on New Tab" was unchecked. I checked it, but still don't get the cursor in the address field when starting Vivaldi. It was worth a shot!

Thanks. That bug report is exactly what my issue is, so there is hope that it will be restored. <fingers crossed>

Da*n. Vivaldi says it's fixed -- "We cannot reproduce this internally" -- but on my system (and at least one other user on that snapshot comments page) it's not. I use Speed Dial as my start page.
I did a un-/re-install a couple weeks ago trying to clear out Vivaldi quirks that were annoying me on the assumption that something in my configuration and/or profile was corrupted.
Hmmmm. Reading further comments, I see one from pathduck:
"After testing, it's clear it's the "Startup with..." setting. If set to Last Session, focus is correct. If set to Start Page it's lost."
My testing finds more complex results:
If, and only if, I choose Blank Page under Tabs > New Tab Page does Vivaldi open with the cursor in the address bar. (i.e. Start Page, Home page, or Specific Page all do not have the cursor in the address bar at startup.)
Under Startup, regardless of the settings Vivaldi opens
to Speed Dial andwith no cursor in address bar:- Homepage > Start Page
- Homepage > Specific Page
- Startup with > Last session
- Startup with > Home page
- Startup with > Start Page
- Startup with > Specific pages
... all result in Vivaldi starting with no cursor in the address field, unless I choose Blank Page under Tabs > New Tab Page.
PS: I use no extensions, and this is a recent (couple weeks ago?) fresh installation of Vivaldi.

When I open a new tab (<Ctrl+T> or the + on a tab) the cursor is in the address field...
But is the URL selected?
I have "specific page" everywhere, search in address field, and I always get the cursor in the address field - but at the end of the existing URL which is NOT selected. This broke several updates ago, and I constantly forget.
My habit of years is Ctrl+T, type a search. Now that fails.
With
Vivaldi 3.4.2066.106 (Stable channel) (64-bit) Revision 9faa7da6e287d30fe3948ac5d9d62aefe7977da5 OS Windows 10 OS Version 2004 (Build 19041.630)
it is Ctrl+T, Ctrl+A, search.
With several previous versions it was Ctrl+T, see the selected URL appear, see it unselect itself, wait a few seconds, Ctrl+A, search. If I typed the Ctrl+A too soon it was ignored.
The odd thing is that if I return to the new unselected tab, with Ctrl+Tab or by clicking the tab, the URL is selected!
Choosing "Blank Page" hides my problem, the cursor is in an empty address field, nothing to select. Choosing "Home Page" is just like Specific Page, because my home page is the same specific page.

Maybe that means my problem is solved?

More research reveals:
The cursor not being in the address field when starting Vivaldi started with Vivaldi.3.5.2115.21 x64.
Up until Vivaldi.3.5.2115.4 x64 the cursor was in the address field when starting Vivaldi.
So, apparently, something broke in 2115.21. I have little faith that anyone at Vivaldi will take note and repair it, but "oh yee of little faith."
Now, on to my original concern about Vivaldi as a browser not saving vivaldi.net/vivaldi.com log-in credentials, if I check the "Remember me on this computer" box, it lets me operate the way I like: Can log off each session before closing the tab, but logging me in automatically the next time I visit the page. For kicks, I'm going to see if I can export a .csv file of exported Login Data, add vivaldi.net/vivaldi.com log-in credentials, and import the modified .csv file and have vivaldi.net/vivaldi.com log-in credentials stick.Oops, wrong thread! -

It might fix your problem, but it doesn't fix mine. Anything after 2115.4 is broken for me.
I don't use the "specific page" option, and can simply <Ctrl+T> and start typing.
I used to be able to just start typing after starting Vivaldi, but no longer can.

Well the bug made it into 3.5 Stable.
Guess we'll have to wait for 3.6 snapshots before this regression maybe is fixed... -
Yep, seems like it
This is highly annoying, and it's one of those recurring issues that I've complained about back in the 1.x days too.
-
I just updated to 3.6.2165.34 and it's still not fixed
Any updates on this? Having to always press ctrl+a before typing is getting super old.
-
Got a reply from the Vivaldi twitter account: https://twitter.com/vivaldibrowser/status/1355141065645416450
Yes, sorry about that! We had a fix but reverted it before the update as it caused a regression, we're working on getting it resolved
-
Sorry for the trouble and the devs are on it. Please follow VB-78096 in the future changelogs and thanks for your patience.

@tomzorz Yes! My address field in new tabs is selected! Many thanks to the team.
And... My other nagging issue of about the same vintage seems fixed as well - Win+Up maximizes the Vivaldi window again! Win+Down always worked, but for months I had to click the top right size icon to escape back to full size.
-
@LorenAmelang Well, no, second issue is not fixed. Win+Up to maximize the Vivaldi window worked all day yesterday, through several closes and restarts of Vivaldi, but after hibernating Windows last night, it is broken again.
Somehow a new version of Vivaldi seems to reset whatever causes the problem, and works until the PC hibernates. That stores something that remembers the problem through all restarts of Vivaldi and Windows - until Vivaldi is re-installed.
-
I stumbled upon this thread when I started having this exact issue with the latest update. I did not have this problem prior to version 4.1.2369.16

Well, "everything old is new again." My OP starting this thread is again occurring: when starting Vivaldi the cursor is not in the address field. When opening a new tab <ctrl+t>, the cursor is in the address field.
The difference is that now I'm using:
Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2770.3
Windows 11 Pro V.21H2 (OS Build 22000.856).This just started happening again about a day or two ago. Any ideas to fix this?
