A few missing features and suggestions
-
I though that maybe it's time to switch from old Opera 12 to Vivaldi but I am still missing some important features. Maybe some of them are already planned or maybe they're even implemented but in some hidden way I don't see. I know that some of them can be added via extensions but that's not the same as built-in feature. So the list that I see after few hours of use is: 1. Pop-up windows unexpected behavior Pop-up windows show in a new tab with a full size. I didn't find a way to turn this feature off and let the pop-ups to show in their normal way - as a small window for example. This even affects functionality of some extensions that are supposed to show a little window above the page but a completely separated new tab is shown instead. 2. Go to Web Address function In Opera there was a very useful function in the right click context menu on a selected text on a web page. This function navigated (in the same tab or in a separated when Ctrl was held during click) to a selected string as if it was a web page which was very useful when there was a link in a text which wasn't clickable. 3. Search with function Similar to Go to Web Address function. In the selected text right click context menu there was a standard Search function which searched for a selected string using default search engine (this is in Vivaldi too). But there was also a "Search with" function which allowed user to select any from the existing search engines to use for the searching (with the standard Ctrl for a new tab behavior). 4. Private tab I can't see this functionality anywhere. There is a private window but no private tab as was in Opera. 5. Reload every function In the web page right click context menu there was a funcion to reload page in a set interval. This feature isn't in Vivaldi and the extensions I tried were all pretty poor compared to Opera's functionality. 6. Quick way to close tabs In Opera there was a great way to close tab by holding Shift and left clicking on it. This was very useful when closing many tabs opened next to each other (for example when someone has opened many articles from Wikipedia each in a new tab). All I had to do was hold cursor in the place, hold Shift and click rapidly to close as many tabs as I wanted. In Vivaldi I found out that with Shift I can select tabs but after selecting there is no way to close them all which is weird. So this would be also useful to add - function in the selected tabs right click context menu to close all selected tabs. 7. Tabs aren't clickable in the topmost part of the window There is a free space between a tab and the top of the screen which isn't doing anything when clicked on. I know this place is reserved for the small bar which is shown in a groupped tabs. But it would be great if the free space was clickable also in a non-groupped tab. Clicking on the space should select the tab below the cursor. I think this behavior makes great sense when you think of it - one non-groupped tab has something like a full width bar same as the divided bar above groupped tabs but with only one clickable section. 8. Tab thumbnails can't be fully turned off A tab thumbnails were in Opera too but I didn't like them so I turned them off and there wasn't any way to turn them back on from any other place then the settings. The option name was "Enable thumbnails in tabs". But in Vivaldi even when I explicitly turn them off in the settings they still can be easily turned back on by changing tabs height. There is still the height-changing cursor shown when hovering between a tab and the address bar which is annoying and sometimes leads to accidentally dragging a tab down instead of clicking on it. 9. Plugins on demand In Opera there was a option to enable plugins on demand. This is great for disabling flash but making it quickly available when needed. 10. Dockable developer tools Opera Dragonfly was docked at the bottom of the screen by default. Developer tools in Vivaldi are separated in their own window and I can't find any way to dock them to the bottom. Which is really useful when working with the tools. 11. Clickable elements when using developer tools Opera Dragonfly had a function which when turned on allowed user to select elements on the page until turned off. In Vivaldi's developer tools there is only the magnifying glass function which allows to select one element and then it automatically turns off. For me it looks like that the ability to toggle this function is somewhat missing. 12. New tasks on the taskbar bug Every once in a while Vivaldi makes a new item on the Windows task bar as if it was a different application separated from the pinned one. I tried many times to unpin the original one and pin the newly created one but in a while Vivaldi makes another one and the pinned looks like it's not running. This surely is a bug since this behavior isn't normal for any application and it's contra-productive (I always need to search where is the real running Vivaldi at the taskbar). 13. Downloads as a tab I never liked the sidebar because it takes space from the screen and that's why I really liked the download manager in Opera which was separated in it's own tab and wasn't taking any space. In Vivaldi I didn't find a way to show and use download manager in a tab instead of the sidebar. Also a button to show the downloads tab placed somewhere near the address bar would be great too (I've had it there in Opera). 14. Customizable navigation buttons Opera had great ability to customize all panels - add and remove buttons or other features. I understand that this isn't easy to make and I don't miss it much except the navigation buttons. I would like the ability to add, remove and change order of the buttons (in Opera I had only four buttons in this order - Back, Forward, Refresh, Log In). 15. Password manager similar to Opera Password manager (Magic Wand) in Opera was really straight-forward to use and the page was untouched before I clicked on the Log In button. But in Vivaldi the login forms on the pages are sometimes filled in right after loading the page and when there are more possible usernames to fill in Vivaldi shows a suggestions when the username field is selected. I find this obtrusive, I don't like when browser changes the page behavior without me explicitly knowing and telling it to change it. Username suggestions can be part of a web page or they can be a function of a browser which I can't tell when this functionality can't be turned off. The best way I like it is the functionality of the Password manager in Opera - Log in button which when clicked asks for a username from the list of saved credentials and then fills the strings in and "clicks" on the submin (login) button in the page. 16. Per site preferences and cookies editing In Opera there was a function in the right click context menu "Edit site preferences..." which gave an access to many useful functionalities for individual sites - for example popup blocking, masking as different browser, deleting and editing cookies, enabling plugins, custom stylesheets, using proxy, blocking JS and more. Everything was set and saved per site (server) which was great. In Vivaldi there is only "View page info" function which gives access to cookies (but without ability to change them) and to global site settings which obviously aren't saved per site (except the unpractical "Manage exceptions..." options). 17. Navigating back doesn't remember scrollbar position In Opera the back function not only navigated one page back but also jumped to the same scrollbar position as was when leaving the page. For example you're reading an article and in the middle you see some link and click on it, after reading the other page you want to go back and continue reading from the place that you left. Opera did it right but in Vivaldi the back function always shows the original page scrolled to the top. 18. Search engine with POST method In Opera you could create a search that was sending query using the POST method instead of the standard GET method. In Vivaldi GET is the only option. That's all I can think of now but I'm sure I will come up with more later If some of the features are already in Vivaldi but I didn't find them, please tell me where they are. Thank you! Edit: Added three new suggestions. Edit2: Added one new suggestion. Edit3: Added two new suggestions.

As I see, nobody cares.

As I see, nobody cares.
That's not entirely the case. It's just that:
a) your post is too long to read.
b) your post is too long to respond to.
c) literally everything you asked for has been asked for and discussed at least a couple of times in the past, and in some cases a couple of dozen times.
d) there is little incentive to discuss further, as it's clear to those (several thousand) of us who have been following Vivaldi that each item you have mentioned is likely or certain to appear in the browser in the normal course of events - it's just too early to get too anxious about any one of them in particular. There was, months ago, a comprehensive survey conducted of users on this site, concerning what features were considered important. There were hundreds of responses. Each of the items you mention was somewhere on the list, and that list was a couple of hundred items long in the end.So, users looked at your post and just said to themselves "Meh. Don't have the energy (or time) for this right now." Don't feel slighted. It's just that you came a bit late to the party with these items, and the partygoers are already a bit jaded.
I will say that I notice Item 7, desire to have tabs touch the top of the screen. There is a setting for this if the browser is maximized. It was discussed to death over the course of several weeks, since it was not possible at all, and then the developers added "Menu/Tools/Settings/Tabs/Remove Tab Spacing in Maximized Windows." So, at least there's thatโฆ
Further, the developers made clear that developing private tabs as opposed to private windows could be considered in the future, but with the type of interface we have, and the fact that we're on top of Chromium, makes it devilishly hard to code.
Plugins on demand can be set at chrome://settings/content since it hasn't been incorporated into the Vivaldi interface yet.
Don't know why Vivaldi keeps duplicating its taskbar item on you. Doesn't seem to do that to anyone else. If you unpin the original one and then pin the one that appears when the program is open, it should just stay like that forever, through updates and everything.
I think I'll leave it there.

Thanks for the answer
I, of course, didn't know that all these things were said before. And now I understand why nobody replied. But if someone just wrote something like "all these issues were already discussed before" then I would know right away But now it's clear and since it was already discussed I'm satisfied. -

Well that's what I was talking about. That's pretty lame of me that I didn't notice it before and I was really going through all of the settings. Sorry for that.

I understand. This is not a dealbreaker for me. And maybe just a way to open a private window quicker the navigating through menus would be enough for most people. For example in the right-click context menu of the new tab button.
Plugins on demand can be set at chrome://settings/content since it hasn't been incorporated into the Vivaldi interface yet.
Thanks, that sounds like what I missed.

I found two threads with a similar problem but their solution didn't work for me. I tried to pin the duplicated item several times (and unpinning the original of course) but with the next run of Vivaldi it quickly duplicates itself again.

I tried to pin the duplicated item several times (and unpinning the original of course) but with the next run of Vivaldi it quickly duplicates itself again.
Just to clarify, after unpinning (both?) did you restart Vivaldi BEFORE pinning the "correct" (now the only) one?

I think I tried that too but I can try it again. But the process that I described was like this - I run Vivaldi from the taskbar pinned item. Then after a few minutes of usage Vivaldi suddenly duplicates itself in a way that the original pinned item appears as if it was closed and a new one appears at the right end of all items as if it was some new never pinned program. Then I unpin the original (now inactive) item and pin the newly created one. Then it'll stay pinned for a while and then suddenly the process repeats again. So as you suggested I will try to unpin the item and restart Vivaldi by closing and directly launching it from the explorer and then I'll try to pin it again. I will report back if it worked.

Well, it didn't work. For the first launch it was good but now I launched it from the taskbar and it duplicated itself right after launching. So again the pinned item is inactive and there is another one at the right side.

Huh.
As Ayespy said that was the solution for other users!?Not sure if you're using Vivaldi 32 or 64 bit version, but the 32 bit version is supposedly "more stable" so you could try that if you haven't already?

I'm using version 1.0.303.52 (Beta) (32-bit) under Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. And I never had this problem with any other program before, so it most probably is something with Vivaldi.

Well, the current snapshot version from https://vivaldi.net/ is 1.0.340.7. I don't know if upgrading to that will make any difference, but who knows? It might be worth a try.
The other things that occur to me, since you are the only person in the world so far to have reported this problem, all have to do with Vivaldi per se, but only insofar as it interacts with your unique system. These are:
Vivaldi installed atypically or in an atypical location
Vivaldi was installed in one location and now is in another
Vivaldi was installed with one kind of user permissions and now is installed with another
At some point during install of some version, Vivaldi threw a registry bug which is unique to your system, and now it won't quit trying to create taskbar appearance
You could be using an after-market 3rd party window manager or desktop manager, or may have created a 2nd (hidden) desktop in Win 7.
Or something along these lines. The uniqueness of your situation does not bode well for the developers to be able to replicate it and remedy its cause, but: Over time, the Vivaldi developers will refine and update the installer, which could actually cure your problem like magic at a later date. Further, there have been enough complaints about the (non-persistent) problem of duplicate taskbar items that a fix for this will come to the installer some day, and that may fix it for you as well. If you're able, you may also update to Win10 in time, and THAT may fix it.
The least likely (but not impossible) thing that occurs to me is that there is something in your user profile which is causing this. In such a case, one would uninstall Vivaldi, move/rename one's profile folder, reinstall Vivald (from the latest snapshot?) and then replace only the needed files in the new profile folder with ones from the old.
Otherwise, you would seem to be a man without a country on this one. One of those completely off-the-wall and untraceable things that crops up with new software.

Thanks for the long reply. I understand that since no one else has this problem it's hard to replicate. And I hope that it'll repair itself with some other changes in Vivaldi in the future versions.
As for the individual suggested causes:

I downloaded the beta from vivaldi.com (which is still the same 1.303.52) and never updated. I'll try it.
Vivaldi installed atypically or in an atypical location
I installed it via normal installer with per user settings (not a standalone). But I chose different location than the default since I don't install software in the Program files folder or some other default locations.
Vivaldi was installed in one location and now is in another
It's still in the folder I chose in the installation.
Vivaldi was installed with one kind of user permissions and now is installed with another
It was installed using the same user account with an admin permissions that it's now launched from.
At some point during install of some version, Vivaldi threw a registry bug which is unique to your system, and now it won't quit trying to create taskbar appearance
I installed only one version once, but this could happen, we can't be sure.
You could be using an after-market 3rd party window manager or desktop manager, or may have created a 2nd (hidden) desktop in Win 7.
I'm not using anything like this.
If you're able, you may also update to Win10 in time, and THAT may fix it.
I don't want Windows 10 so I don't see this happening anytime soon.

In such a case, one would uninstall Vivaldi, move/rename one's profile folder, reinstall Vivald (from the latest snapshot?) and then replace only the needed files in the new profile folder with ones from the old.
I can try installing from a different account or on a virtual machine.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try what I can and if I find a fix I will share it here of course.

I see. The fact that you did not install to user/appdata/local may be the actual cause. This is where Vivaldi expects to find everything on your system.
Unless you choose x64, Vivaldi does not install to a "programs" folder by default.
As to "not wanting" Win10, I have to mention that it literally made all of my Win 7 and Win 8 machines start up faster, shut down faster, use less energy and run better, and I disabled all of the privacy-invading "phone home" features that come with it. So I'm happy with it. Your call, of course. But I know there has been some unfounded alarmism about the system and people need not be as averse to it as some claim.

Well maybe that's the problem's origin. But I'll try some of the other methods before reinstalling Vivaldi. And for the Windows 10 I understand that it could be maybe better but I'm really satisfied with Windows 7 - for me it's fast and reliable in everything. So I have no reason to change it. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
