Is it possible to return to a previous version?
-
Think I may have made a mistake by allowing the update to 3.7.2218.45
I realize Vivaldi is tab happy but really miss the maximize/,minimize/close buttons in the upper right hand corner. Not having them requires at least one additional mouse click.
The Fast Forward/Rewind or Forward/Back buttons are gone.
Unable to check boxes to select options, example: Delete Browser Data or any boxes in settings. Boxes are empty and cannot be checked.
Do I have to uninstall and then reinstall the previous version or is there another way?
Only way to access bookmarks for editing is by pressing Control and the B key. BELIEVE that occurred in the last version.
Thanx in advance for any help that may be suggested.

@DesertOutlaw Going back to a previous version is possible, but definitely NOT recommended, for security and technical reasons (you could break your profile).
None of the things you mention are expected in the new version, so maybe you've triggered a rare bug on update.
I would first try in a clean profile.
https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/tools/user-profiles/I would also run through the troubleshooting tips:
https://help.vivaldi.com/article/troubleshooting-issues/ -
Downgrading to a previous version is not recommended. Doing so can corrupt your Vivaldi profile (because they might have changed important things).
All the issues you are bringing up sound like bugs. I still have the buttons in the upper right corner, the forward/back buttons, can check boxes, and open the bookmarks page in the usual ways.
I'd suggest that you open a guest profile to check if the issues are still there in a clean profile. If everything is working in a guest profile then something is broken in your user profile. If you still see the same issues also as guest then you might want to reinstall Vivaldi (maybe the update installer messed something up?).

@Komposten Cannot create another profile, cannot check ANY option in Settings.
Tried troubleshooting, restarted but no change except bookmarks as a button in the middle of the page for access. However, once in, can only access bookmarks for editing by and Control and the B key.
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera works although Opera is slow loading.
Not sure what is occurring but navigating is difficult. Bookmarked this page by right clicking since option in gone from right of url window. so I could return.
Saving my bookmarks so I can perform a fresh install.
Anyway to save passwords?
-
Reason why I ask is because I cannot save webpage passwords from settings.
Also, when I open Settings or bookmarks, any attempt to close either closes browser.
What is occurring is very odd and frustrating.

@DesertOutlaw Can you post a screenshot of what your broken Vivaldi looks like? (Without sensitive information, of course)?
Also, try running Vivaldi with the
--profile-directory
command line switch. Right-click your Vivaldi shortcut, open Properties, and place--profile-directory="profile2"
at the end of the text in the field called "Target". That should tell Vivaldi to create a new profile (called "profile") and start with that. Your old profile will still be safe, so there is no risk that you'll lose data doing this.
Regarding saving passwords, the only way I know of is to go to
chrome://settings/passwords
, click the 3-dot button to the right of "Saved Passwords", and then export. Not sure if you can do that, though, considering the bugs you are experiencing... -
Cannot run command. Properties will not open.
Gonna make a decision what other browser to use so I can import my bookmarks to that browser and then go thru the time-consuming process of going to each login page for each password so it can be saved.
I really believe I made a mistake by upgrading. Does not look the same. perform the same, most options do not work, background is white, etc. Difficult to navigate, Tried a couple social sites and with no controls of the tabs, its extremely difficult. Must e more than just a bug,
I'll just lean forward, get above it.

@DesertOutlaw If you cannot export passwords from V, go to Nirsoft.net and download ChromePass.
Warning:- Your AV will balk !! so whitelist it
- I believe you can configure it for Vivaldi
- and the .csv output may not match what Vivaldi needs (I've never used it except for backup) so you may have to massage the .csv file.

Able to get into Quick Commands with F2 and select Manage Profiles to created new profile
Unable to import bookmarks and passwords during setup.
Added view toolbar(s) and able to access Bookmarks from Bookmarks dropdown and import from first profile. Had to close browser
However, after starting browser, only able to access bookmarks by Control and letter B key.Fast Forward Rewind and Refresh buttons, url window not displayed.
Tried to login to Google youtube and received,
"This browser or app may not be secure. Try using a different browser. If yoi're already using a supported browser, you can refresh your screen and try again to login"Had to type since Print screen or Capture from under Tools works. Print Screen works fine in other browsers.
Everything worked until the upgrade.

@DesertOutlaw said in Is it possible to return to a previous version?:
Tried to login to Google youtube and received,
"This browser or app may not be secure. Try using a different browser. If yoi're already using a supported browser, you can refresh your screen and try again to login"That just means the "google extensions" under Settings/Privacy have been disabled.

@TbGbe Thank you. Will be trying it tomorrow. Been trying to get Viv working better and am having some success.
Also, there was an accumulative update from M$ I need to check.
-
Thought perhaps it was brown screen of death but rule out possibility since color only occurred on Internet pages,
Not sure why, but High Contrast was turned off. Not sure whether it was the Vivaldi update or the M$ update.
Something changed it. Returning the setting to High Contrast permitted options to be checked.
Contrast colors returned.
Background page color returned.
Address bar was returned to the top.
Scroll bar visible again.
Could select Bookmark dropdown.
All boxes in Settings are checkable.
Only bug or nuisance that remains is with Bookmarks. Still need to use Control B to access and manage bookmarks which I can live with.
Therefore. may I suggest should similar issues arise, to check the Contrast settings in Windows 10. Definitely helped me.
Now to reboot the computer for the other M$ update and hope it does not change any settings
.

Thanks for the help.
Nothing prompts one to look under the hood more than a problem.
Not here very often since the browser normally does what it is suppose to do without issues.
Note: I normally perform updates thru PatchMyPC which I have been using I believe 3 to 4 years. Reason why is been using Mozilla Thunderbird even longer than Vivaldi but updating would not complete from the pop window or from the Help dropdown. A member from the Mozilla Help board that experienced the same issue suggested it. Using PatchMyPC resolved the issue and also updated many other non-M$ programs including Vivaldi. I use Glary Utilities to supplement updates as it will find a few additional programs for which updates are available that do not appear in PatchMyPC. However, I use PatchMyPC to update Glary Utilities which I have been using for over a year. To date both programs work great.
Believe its safe to say issues have been resolved.
Able to delete original profile.
Admins, please feel free to close this post if and when necessary.

FYI: Updated Vivaldi on two other machines. One Windows 10, the other Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS. Both updated flawlessly and performing great. Leaning more toward my machine having a bug than Vivaldi.
