URL dragged to desktop still uses URL for filename not page title.
-
As per the title. If a URL is dragged onto the Apple Mac desktop the shortcut created is names as per the URL and not the page title (which is what every other browser does).
Can the developers advise if this is ever going to be fixed? This is the one remaining issue I have with using Vivaldi on the Mac.
I had reported this is the past but the bug report was deleted.
-
This happens for me on Windows too...
-
Yep it's been an annoyance to me for ages. Should be an easy fix too.
-
Hi Gwen, it'd not be a problem if it had been closed but it was completely deleted. Anyway fingers crossed it does get resolve one day. Then I can actually start using the browser.
-
It was bug reference VB-66974VB-66974 raised 3rd of May 2020.
I hope that helps
-
One quick translation later..... Thanks. How did you track that?
-
@Gwen-Dragon Ah ha thanks fo that. I also just got this email through:
Thanks for reporting this issue and sorry for the trouble. We were able to reproduce the issue. The developers will look into it and if they have a fix, we’ll send you an automated update via email once the fix is released in the Stable version of Vivaldi. We’re a small team, so please bear in mind that (depending on the complexity) it may take a while for the fix to get into our Stable version. Thank you for being patient with us and using Vivaldi!
So I do have some hope I guess.
-
@Gwen-Dragon Ahhh right. Hopefully then one day I'll be able to return to Vivaldi.......
-
Is there any change we can see this fixed in an up-and-coming snapshot?
It should be a simple change in logic to fix it Vivaldi already knows the title of the page, it just need to filter out any 'unfriendly' ASCII characters then use that title as the string used for the file name and voila problem solved!
-
Thanks Gwen. So does that mean it should be fixed in that Snapshot, or that you've put forward that it be considered for fixing in it?
-
Ah right, in that case I'll continue to cross my fingers and hope. It does seem strange though that bugs like this are not fixed and that new features (that in my opinion are gimmicks) are added. I still think the developmental ethos is a little wrong at times

After 17 years with Safari (since it first appeared), I'm feeling a need for a different browser. I've looked at all the major and some of the minor players, and found Vivaldi most congenial: I like the look and feel, and the sense of community.
However, after a couple days with Vivaldi, I just ran into this problem. As the OP describes, when a URL is dragged from the address field of a Web page to the Desktop, it appears as a .webloc file, with the first portion of the address as its name rather than the name of the page. E.g., for this page it's "forum.vivaldi.net/" rather than "URL dragged to desktop still uses URL for filename not page title. | Vivaldi Forum", which is what I get from Safari.
"forum.vivaldi.net/" does work, goes to this page when double-clicked, but the name is not informative – especially if I do the same with another page from this forum, which will then show a nearly identical name, i.e. "forum.vivaldi.net/ 2" (the "2" supplied by the OS due to the rule that two files in the same space cannot have identical names), though when double-clicked it will go to the (different) page it came from.
(Hmm, I just tried dragging the URL from yet another page, and got "https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/53474/cookie-auto-delete" – i.e. the whole URL, I don't know why.)
This function works as expected in Brave, Chrome, Dissenter, Epic, Firefox, iCab, Iridium, Opera, Safari, Waterfox, and Yandex, but not in Vivaldi. Strange, as Vivaldi is based on the same Chromium/Blink foundation as 7 of the other 11.
The same happens when the URL is dragged into an open Finder window (showing the contents of a folder/directory).
¶
Related is what happens when I drag the URL from the address field from Safari into an open document in TextEdit (the excellent basic word processor that comes with MacOS): it becomes an instant clickable link, with the name of the page:URL dragged to desktop still uses URL for filename not page title. | Vivaldi Forum
Whereas from Vivaldi it becomes a link of the raw URL:
Oddly, the same happens with Firefox:
Though the other browsers all produce the same result as Safari. I create such documents often as a way to collect a bunch of subject-related links, rather than cluttering up the Finder with a lot of individual .webloc files.
¶
I use this function many times every day, so it would be nice if it worked properly in Vivaldi, which I would like to make my default browser. I like it well otherwise (though it certainly has some rough edges), but this lack is a constant annoyance.Update: After a week of dealing with this lack, I've given up. Since I have to drag every link I want to save into Brave (or any other browser) to get what I want from it, I've decided to just switch to that excellent browser (though otherwise I don't like it as much as Vivaldi) as my primary. I'll check back now and then, and probably return to Vivaldi when this is fixed.
I'm not a programmer, but as noted above, seems like this should not be hard to fix – since practically every other browser does it without apparent trouble. Please?

A top job done by Henrik on this one. Looking forward to the fix coming through!
