Pet peeve: A plugin is not an extension is not an app.
A plugin does not increase browser overhead. It is just the medium the browser uses to interpret and display a specific type of content. It is installed on its own and more than one application on the computer may use it.
An extension is a grafted-on "part" of the browser, which almost always increases overhead because it runs an additional process whose results are shown with the browser UI, either all the time, or every time it is invoked.
An app is basically a website. It might not even have to be installed, because often all it really is, is a shortcut to show the website or a special version of the website in the browser.
Extensions are not plugins. Apps are not extensions. Plugins are not apps. None of these things is the same as any of the others.

http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/register/new_faq/chrome_extension.htmlNot really, you are linking to browser download managers, of which Firefox also has.
"DownThemAll" is primarily used to rip content from websites.
Personally, I wouldn't touch "DownThemAll" with a 20 foot pole. The (App|Extension|Plugin|Program|EXE|JS|COM|BIN|AHK|THING THAT DOES STUFF ON A COMPUTER) though has highly questionable code, monitoring and reporting capabilities.
