Vivaldi won't display YouTube comments
-
Actually it will only display YouTube comments when I'm logged in into Gmail. But here's the thing, it happens only on my default profile, how is this possible? Extensions don't play a role, because even when they are all disabled it still happens, it's a complete mystery.
-
@RasheedHolland I don't login to gmail in my Vivaldi.
However, I have not had any problems with YouTube displaying (or allowing me to create) comments.
Note: disabling extensions may not be enough; have you checked in a Guest Profile ?
Also, check whether you have disabled Tools/Settings/Privacy - Google Extensions - Crypto Token ?
-
Thanks for the feedback guys. It's a weird problem because it only happens with my default profile, even when all extensions are disabled. Perhaps I should clear some cookies and my cache. It's not related to the Google Extensions settings because it also happened with older Vivaldi versions. I was shocked to see that comments did work while I'm logged into Gmail.

@RasheedHolland I don't know if this could help :
@LonM said in Can't See YouTube Comments:
-
Youtube requires cookies to work fully in order to use them. Try allowing third party cookies and disabling any extensions that might modify them
-
Right-click and inspect the page. Then, reload it with the network view open. See if there are any errors being raised when you try to view the comments.

Thanks for the feedback, even with third party cookies enabled it still won't work. And I'm afraid the "Inspect" tool is too advanced for me. Wait a minute, you won't believe it, but after clearing my cookies, it all of a sudden does work. I believe I already tried this, but perhaps I'm an idiot, who knows LOL.

Thanks, sometimes these issues are so weird and you THINK you have tried everything, but perhaps I really didn't, it's crazy. For example, I had this issue with the "apps running in the background" feature on Win 10, I tried everything but I broke Windows so eventually I had to do a factory reset. After the reset, I could all of a sudden disable apps from running in the background. I spent hours trying to fix it.

BTW, turns out that in order to see comments, I will always first have to clean the YouTube cookies on youtube.com, now how weird is that?

@RasheedHolland Nothing left in my "help" pocket...
I hope someone else can help you further.
If not, you could need to Report a bug.
Good luck. -

Without UBO:

Even with this settings in UBO there is no comments:
-
@barbudo2005 Obviously if using an ad-blocking extension, the responsibility to troubleshoot lies with you. You need to figure out what is being blocked in uBO by using the logger feature and what list is triggering this block.
This is not a Vivaldi issue.
Maybe this is the same issue as @RasheedHolland has, but they've said clearing cookies fixed it, and were running a clean profile with no extensions.
You can also check the Network tab in Devtools to find what requests are being blocked. In this case, I suspect you will see blocks for requests to
https://www.youtube.com/comment_service_ajax
as that's where comments are loaded from. -

So the original issue doesn't appear to be related to extensions. But of course, it wouldn't be the first time a user thinks they've disabled all extensions when they really have not...
Users might also have imported non-standard lists in the Vivaldi blocker and the same could happen, and not understanding properly the implications of doing so.

Good luck.I believe it will remain a mystery. Perhaps I will need to do a complete reinstall, but now that I think about it, perhaps somehow Sandboxie plays a role, this is a protection tool that I run on top of Vivaldi. But I doubt it.

OK so I'm not the only one with this problem? Do you get to see comments when you clear cookies?
-
@RasheedHolland I cleared cookies and no comments.
My problem must be a filter list in UBO.

I decided to test it again and I think I now finally solved it. I once again turned off all extensions but that didn't solve it, so it wasn't the problem. Then I noticed that certain third party cookies were being blocked, so I allowed them and now I don't have to clear any cookies to see comments.
So seems you were right, it's indeed related to blocking of third party cookies. It seems like you need to allow google.com to make it work. And BTW, the problem also started to appear on my laptop, so it wasn't just a problem on my desktop. Seems like Google really messed up.

@RasheedHolland FWIW - I block 3rd-party cookies and I run uBO and can still see comments on YT. My guess is you still have requests to get comments being blocked. Have you actually checked the Devtools -> Network tab as suggested earlier?

Fwiw, using uMatrix for some years, & since swapping back to uBO again a few weeks ago, i never see YT comments. However my attitude seems to differ from some others -- in my case, i regard this as a Feature not a Bug!
Maybe you could have a look at the logger in uBO and try to figure out why the comments are blocked and what list is used? As said earlier, if requests to
https://www.youtube.com/comment_service_ajax
is blocked, then comments won't load.It might actually help others who are struggling you know

Can you perhaps check which cookies are being blocked on YouTube on your system? I've just tested it on Vivaldi Portable 3.6, and it says that cookies are being blocked but it doesn't actually display any third party cookies that are being blocked, so there's someting weird going on.
