to replace its bad old Android
Yes! I feel really trapped with Android. It's quite hard not to have Gogol apps spying what you're doing, who you are, etc. (and I can say I hate that feeling!)

@Ornorm there are some options e.g. https://www.lineageos.org/
-
@Stardust Thanks for that, I'll have a look.

The contrast between the fabulous freedom & flexibility of my Linux desktop, vs the imprisonment of my Android mobile, is extreme.
I can believe so. For me, the contrast is less extreme. Do you remember why?

@Ornorm Linux installation in 3 days...

I got this email with no body... no link to a story, nothing but this.
The Galaxy S II still lives: Developer unofficially ports LineageOS 18.1 based on Android 11
From (XDA Developers [email protected])... Nothing on their site about it.
But wasn't Android based on Linux !?!? I'm confused.
For security I still think Blackberry is the way to go... but that' just moi.

@greybeard Android is based on a Linux kernel, but it's not deemed a real Linux distro. Anyway, it's a Google project, a whole different world than Linux/GNU.

Android uses a Linux kernel. The problem is Google adds its own patches, so itās different to the kernel a normal Linux distribution ships. There have been attempts to bring them back in line and Linux adds certain features from Android upstream, but not all of them.
A proper Linux phone uses a proper Linux kernel. The issue is the community doesnāt decide for one distribution/system, but spreads itself thin and develops different operating systems on top of that kernel. This hinders it to become mainstream, because the efforts are multiplied. Fewer users, fewer developers, more systems. While I really like the idea of the Pinephone, there are about a dozen operating systems available for it and none of them comes close in functionality and features to Android. I mean, just look at the list, itās silly:
- postmarketOS
- Ubuntu Touch
- Mobian
- SailfishOS
- Fedora
- Arch Linux ARM
- Manjaro ARM
- Maemo Leste
- Nemo Mobile
- KDE Neon
- NixOS
- LuneOS
- Sxmo
- openSUSE
- AVMultiPhone
- GloDroid
- Gentoo

@luetage Wow... I knew there were one or two but that is ridiculous. I guess everyone wants in on the action!?
I'll remain without a mobile. -
@greybeard Coƶperation and open source is a doubleāedged sword. Everyone wants to make the next big thing and no one can agree on what it is. Why do Linux distributions need different app stores, software packaging systems and calculators? And even if there are advancements towards independent packaging, as soon as someone starts it there are 3 competing formats (appimage, snap, flatpak). We can be glad Google picked up the smartphone market and produced Android, or most of us would probably be using Windows phones right now.

@luetage Cough cough cough...
I'm afraid I just installed Microsoft Launcher -
@Ornorm Where is that downvote button when you need it : /
