Vivaldi closes on its own in 26 seconds
-
I installed the latest version of vivaldi yesterday and am running it on windows 10. I reported the crash and the bug report has been given the issue reference VB-74385 if that helps at all.
This is what happened: I had four tabs open, including a new tab. The new tab was showing and I thought my cursor was in the search bar of the new tab, so I typed "tele". I didn't finish typing what I was going to search for when 26 seconds later vivaldi closes on its own. I unfortunately don't know where my cursor was at the time. I don't think that I hit enter after typing "tele" because that was not all that I was going to search for.
I re-opened vivaldi to see if I could restore the 3 other pages that I had open but the browser just kept closing on its own. I restarted my computer and it did not help at all, vivialdi is still closing on it own 26 seconds after it is opened. I am having to send this from firefox. I don't remember if I have any extensions (I don't think that I do) or the exact security stuff that I applied to the browser.
Some help would be great as I really enjoy using vivaldi and that is where all of my bookmarks are too.
Thank you for everyone's time!

Hi,
Welcome to Vivaldi's Forums!Try to Test on a Clean Profile from Profile Manager:
- Locate a Shortcut of your installation
- Create a copy and rename it to
Profile Manager
- Right click and Properties on it
- At the very end of
Target
, add:- [ A Space]
--profile-directory
- [ A Space]
- Save & Open that ShortCut and
Add Person
- [Test / Emergency / ...] - Check if it works
--
If works,
Backup your Profiles, Follow the Tip and Copy one level above of the New / Test Profile, to assure that the Default Profile is saved. After all that,
Start deleting, directly from W10 File Manager, Cache folder, Code Cache...
And check opening Vivaldi.Try deleting Current Session if not enough.
Then will follow some others, but assure about the BackUp before delete.--
"Off Topic Tip"
Follow the Signature's Backup | Reset link.
Take the opportunity to start a Backup plan and even create a Template Profile.

@thatonegirl Another thing to try if the above doesn't work:
- Find your Vivaldi profile sessions folder (Windows:
c:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default\Sessions
), and delete the contents of that folder. This should let Vivaldi start with no open tabs, in case a tab causes the crash.
If you're able to fix the issue, and you're able to reproduce it again, you could update your issue with the new details on how the crash happened by replying to the email you received from the bug tracker. This will help the team a lot.
- Find your Vivaldi profile sessions folder (Windows:

Thanks @Zalex108! The test/emergency profile worked, however, I am stuck on how to find the profile path to copy the data. I have looked everywhere and can not seem to find it.
I did have my sync on when this incident happened. If I fully reset vivaldi and log back in to my profile, will I still have my saved sessions as well as bookmarks, etc?
-
@thatonegirl @Pathduck showed you the path to profile on Windows in a post just above yours:
c:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default
. -
@Pathduck Thanks for the info/help! I got as far as looking for the AppData folder and it is not there.
-
Access the Emergency Profile, and go to
Vivaldi://About
, Note the Path for Profile at Bottom. -
Sure,
Following that, your Default should appear at the side "File Explorer" as "Default".It was the Only Profile on the Windows User?
-
@Zalex108 The only folders under the Users folder are: Admin, <user> and Public. I finally found the profile path, thank you. But like I said, no AppData folder.
-
@thatonegirl Oh, I'm sorry I forgot it's a hidden folder. Just copy the path, paste it into Explorer, edit in your username and press enter. Or use this in Explorer:
%localappdata%\Vivaldi\User Data\Default\Sessions
Or read:
https://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-10/how-to-show-hidden-files-in-windows-10/
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/view-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows-10-97fbc472-c603-9d90-91d0-1166d1d9f4b5 -
Complementing @Pathduck info:
- Win + R > %AppData%
And you'll be redirected despite Hidden Files toggle to the Current User's folder.
-
@hlehyaric Thanks, I finally got to the profile path!
-
@Pathduck Awesome, I found it, thank you so much!
-
@thatonegirl Wait did you just post in the future?Edit: just realized my computer's clock is ahead, according to Time.is
-
Ok @Zalex108, am I copying just the Default folder for the backup or all of the folders along with the Default folder?
-
@legobuilder26 Haha, maybe!
-
The Default Should be Your Main Profile.
Despite that,
You can copy the whole Root, one level UP, to assure.Or post a Screenshot and we will check it.
-
Ok @Zalex108, I am copying just the Default folder and the First Run file right now - like the link instructions said.
Just to make sure I understand this correctly, why am I copying the Default folder from the test/emergency profile? When I was able to open vivaldi with the test profile it did not have any of my bookmarks, etc.

Ok,
In a normal Install, the Hierarchy it's:Main=Default
2nd=Profile1=New User [Test / EMergency / ...]
3rd=Profile2=EtcEdit:
The Main folder contains all the Profiles, but the Default one is the Primary. So,
What's the Profile's Name of the New Profile? You have to Copy the Default on the Side, but better One Level Above.
At least for now. -

The copy of the
Default
folder is to create a backup before you delete theUser Data
folder, to allow you to copy the important files back again. The test profile you created will have another name, usually something like
Profile 1
.I would try deleting the files under
Sessions
first to avoid completely nuking the profile.
