Solved Freezes under Kubuntu 20.10
-
Hello,
Does anybody experience desktop "freezes" under Kubuntu 20.10 (Plasma 5.19.5) when using Chromium-based browsers, such as Chrome or Vivaldi? Firefox does NOT experience these freezes!

I deactivated "Use of Hardware Acceleration" but left "Compositing in KDE settings" activated (OpenGL 3.1). It has worked now for more than an hour already
!
Thanks for the hint! -
@hstoellinger What I forgot to mention: My old graphics card is supported by the proprieatary NVIDA driver only up to Linux kernel 5.4. So, with Kubuntu 20.10 using kernel 5.8, I have to use the opensource nouveau driver instead.

Hello again,
Is there a way to deactivate hardware acceleration through the command-line (i.e. some spec in some rc-type of file)? I cannot do this through Vivaldi->settings, as ANY action immediately after starting freezes the screen. Thanks -
The screen didn't freeze immediately after starting Vivaldi. So I managed to follow your suggestions. It seems that they help. Changing from Vivaldi to the (also activated) Firefox through the KDE task bar stalled for 3 to 4 seconds. But this probably has nothing to do with Vivaldi itself. I will continue to watch the situation. Thanks

@hstoellinger
vivaldi-stable --disable-gpu
. You may also try--disable-gpu-compositing
and see if that would be just enough. Check then undervivaldi://gpu
