"open in background-tab" from Speed-Dial?
-
Thumbnail generation is broken since Ch45, but you can follow my workaround here.
https://vivaldi.net/en-US/forum/vivaldi-browser/1921-thumbnails-not-appearing-in-speed-dialTalking about the middle button, it works for me.
For the record the old bug was triggered on SD and bookmarks when the scroll bar was present on the left.
So I can't tell a lot more.
to be clear are you on windows? Is the middle button working on normal links?

I'm viewing this thread on Linux and cannot duplicate his issue. Middle click works fine everywhere, including speed dial.

This is my version:
Vivaldi 1.0.252.3 (Developer Build) (64-bit)
Revision 2618a2e522f5bb9a7cfaab6078355c4556b18513 OS WindowsThe middle mouse button, when clicking on any link inside a real web-page opens that link in the background, in a new tab. I've only on rare occasions been confused the way I am now. Why does this program behave in a different way on my computer, at default settings, as it does on yours?
I've been looking for the keyboard shortcuts and I sadly found nothing inside there like Shift+click to try and do it that way.
What other options are there? Also – I still do not get proper thumbnail generation in the speed dial. Do you? With the latest build?
Could it be that there are remnants of an older version of this browser, somewhere on this PC? And for some reason, these old files are loaded instead of the new ones? It's really the only way I could explain this all away. It's like I'm having a way older version than you...
But really, I have the latest. Frustrating!

I'm going to test that very version to see what's going on

Tested the x64 version (on windows 10 x64) and the middle button works as expected.
CTRL+click doesn't work, I guess because on bookmarks it's used to to select multiple items.
You can start vivaldi with a clean profile simply renaming temporarily the folder
C:\Users{your-user}\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data
And you can check your installed version looking at
*C:\Users{your-user}\AppData\Local\Vivaldi*
or
C:\Program Files\vivaldi
or
C:\Program Files (x86)\vivaldi
For any leftover installation
-
I've renamed C:\Users{your-user}\AppData\Local\Vivaldi to C:\Users{your-user}\AppData\Local\Vivaldi-Old, restarted the browser and it was, again, like a fresh install, but still no speed dial thumbs, and no middle-click=open link in background, from speed-dial.
Right now the 32 bit version is installed in C:\Program Files\vivaldi, because I tested if removing the 64 bit version from C:\Program Files (x86)\vivaldi would do the trick. Sadly, no change in browser behaviour.
I've checked all other drive letters.
Really, I'm absolutely stunned that this isn't working as advertised while it seems to do just fine for you.

I've tried this today. In Opera Speed Dial I just middle click on thumbnails like I would on any websites link, and it would open said link in the background, in a new tab.
Is this not implemented in Vivaldis speed dial yet?.
Don't worry, it's not you.
For me, using 32 bit version, it worked that way in earlier version(s), but changed in Vivaldi 1.0.252.3 to now open in foreground!?
However, this change only affects speed dial (!!) When middle clicking on any link inside a real web-page opens that link in the background, in a new tab.
P.S. there is a similar change (foreground/background) in mouse gestures.Thumbs in speed dial also appears to have changed/broken in this build.

Thumbs in speed dial also appears to have changed/broken in this build.
Thumbs are broken since Cr45.
Look here for my workaround

-
Perhaps I should have said MORE broken.
Not a big problem for me, as I don't have a lot of speeddial entries so thumbs are "just cosmetic".
I know others are more concerned and have made a note of your workaround.
Keeps things interesting. -
Anyway the matter was discussed with the devs and they are looking in to it right now.
So, hopefully will be definitely fixed, in a reasonable timeframe.
-
Thumbs still are broken, for me. Another update, and here's a new hotfix, but it seems like they can't be bothered to fix the thumbnails. I am so tired of staring at grey lifeless rectangles all the time, or to have to run older, outdated versions of browser to just get the most basic functionality "faked" back into working condition. Sound depressed and grumpy, forgive me please, it's just … this has been going on for a while now. You'd think someone else there would be bothered by that.
-
You could always manually take screenshots of the sites linked on your speed dial and then use those as the thumbnails. See this thread by An_dz about customizing the speed dial.

I'm not too happy too with that regression.
BUT
There's a reason if there are different streams.
If you are more concerned about stability rather than beading edge features, you should use the Tp4 and wait for Tp5/beta 1 or whatever will be.
Then you have to consider that V coders doesn't have the luxury of taking decisions on the whole source code, and in the specific SD case the update to Cr45 broke them.
Speaking about the streams, Vivaldi isn't even marked as beta, the snapshots are developmental post apha/pre beta releases, there's nothing wrong on releasing them with some features broken and/or unfinished.
