Preview 4 will not run on 10.6.8
-
OK. Downloaded the latest build as of yesterday (July 17) and had same issue–-will not open and run. I reported the bug as you suggested. Was wondering if there is any way I can go back to Tech Preview 3 for the time being since I uninstalled it when I downloaded Preview 4 (will not make that mistake again). By the way, if course I do not think--nor did I intimate in my post--that the developers were specifically targeting me with this issue; I may at times be eccentric but I am not insane. I know of several people running 10.6.8 who have the same problem and I also know what a beta is. It could be that the current and future versions of Vivaldi will only be compatible with 10.7 and above which I could understand I guess. Or, its a bug that will eventually be fixed. Thanks in advance for any constructive suggestions.

By will not run do you mean that clicking on the icon doesn't do anything? Does it at least show the little dot indicator at the bottom? What if you click the new window icon after right clicking the icon?
If that doesn't work, go to finder and right click the vivaldi icon in the application folder, the show package contents and click contents > MacOs > VIvaldi
If that doesn't work, then sorry, i can't help. -
Thanks very much for all of your suggestions but I am afraid that none of them were successful. No matter what method I use to I try to open Vivaldi–whether just double clicking or using the show package contents approach or whatever it always fails and I always get the following message: "Vivaldi cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure Vivaldi works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application, etc." Then there is the usual lengthy error log. As I stated in a previous post, I suspect that the current preview of Vivaldi (and perhaps all subsequent versions) will not run on OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Thanks again anyway. I appreciate your response.

Thanks very much for the information which was very helpful in at least pinpointing a kind of chronology of which build of Vivaldi was the beginning of this problem with my computer and other users of OS X 10.6.8. I tried installing 1.0.219.34 which would not open and run and then went back to 1.0.196.2 and bingo! That build will also not run so your hypothesis was on the money. The trouble for Snow Leopard users apparently began with–as you described it--1.0.196.2 and its big changes in Vivaldi for Mac. I was able to find a copy of 1.0.162.9 on a German web site of all places and downloaded and installed it and it opens and runs OK. So, I think perhaps beginning with 1.0.196.2 Vivaldi no longer runs on 10.6.8 but only on more recent versions of OS X. It would have been nice if the developers had posted some kind of notice on the blog warning people still running 10.6.8 that they would have to update to a newer version of OS X in order to be able to install and use Vivaldi. I will check back with future builds and Tech previews to see if this issue has been dealt with. If not, I guess I will either install 10.10.4 which I understand includes a fix for that discoveryd networking issue (by going back to mDNSResponder ) that has plagued some users of Yosemite or wait until "El Capitan" ships in the Fall. Thanks again.

The team could not have posted a notice about Vivaldi not working on Snow Leopard because they don't know it doesn't. They probably have only tested on Yosemite and maybe Lion.
Apple has already dropped support on Snow Leopard, which doesn't mean Vivaldi will ignore it, but they are a small team and don't have much resource and time to test on all versions.
And is 1.0.162.9 the last working version? Or does 1.0.190.2 works?

There is no need of guessing or checing out which has been the last working version under MacOS 10.6.8:
It has been TP3.1.0.162.9. But this version is not very stable. I could not even finish my registration because Vivaldi crashed before.
All versions which have been released later, did not start at all.
Please do support MacOS 10.6.8 and fix that. Thank you! And yes I did send a bug report! -
Yes, you are quite correct in that 1.0.162.9 is the last version of Vivaldi that works on OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). What I would like to know is if there are people here running 10.7 or above that have been able to install Tech Preview 4 without any problems. Although it is quite true—as An_dz has pointed out—that Apple ended support for Snow Leopard quite some time ago, there are still people using it since—in the opinion of some—it is the last totally stable OS X version. Starting with Mountain Lion Apple began releasing new OS’s on a yearly basis and piling on new features rather than in 18 to 24 month cycles which resulted in new releases not being adequately tested and consequently having many more bugs and issues than previously. Also, of course, many people (myself included) know that some applications will break or not even be available in new releases no matter how stable they may be. But, it is my understanding—based on what I have seen and what developers have told me— that El Capitan when it ships in the Fall will be a more “Snow Leopard” type of OS that will be focused more on stability and repairing known issues in Yosemite rather than in Apple cramming as many bells and whistles into the OS as they can. So that is when I think I will finally say goodbye to Snow Leopard and also maybe be able to install whatever is the current version of Vivaldi at that time. Many thanks for your comment and for comments by An_dz and Nonameentered.
