Memory is higher than Opera
-
The other day I posted that I am back from a several month trial of Opera. Of the five computers in the house 3 use Vivaldi and the other two gave a try a try. Years ago OP was my go-to browser.
Got tired of the stupid codec issues with OP and came back to Vivaldi. But I noticed that Vivaldi uses more memory. On my notebook memory use is important. So I did an experiment:
Load one tab on OP and same one tab on Vivaldi, same site. Close browser and reboot.
Reboot and open only one browser - reboot and open the other browser
Open terminal and type free -- OP - 677,036 memory used
- Vivaldi 844,056 memory used
Is there something I can do about the larger used memory in Vivaldi.
Originally it came to be noticed when I was scrolling through Facebook. Vivaldi started to stop scrolling, jittery scrolling. Tried the same scroll in OP and didn't get the same stop scroll, jittery.
It must be a setting in Vivaldi. I've changed no flags on the notebook install.
I'm using Mint 19.3 Same extensions installed on both.
Help is appreciated.

Hi, Vivaldi UI is on top of Chromium base, Opera change only the Chromium skin.
Therefor Opera starts faster and use less memory, I fear.
This is the price for the highly configurable UI of Vivaldi.
You can check Vivaldi/Opera task manager (Shift+Esc) if one extension use more memory on Vivaldi but I guess it is not.
150 KB should not be a problem, even on older systems with 4GB or so.
It fits 8 times on a 5 1/4" disk from 1984.Scrolling is maybe a GPU acceleration problem, try to switch it off.
Cheers, mib
EDIT: I just test it on my Windows 10 system and there is the opposite, Vivaldi use less memory than Opera. No idea why but I guess drawing UI is very different on Windows. -
While snooping this morning I found a note that said turning off acceleration is helpful. I turned it off and it did help. Your info backed up the note and thank you.

Hi,
If you are on a Dual GPU System, you could try this.
