PDF files are saved instead of being opened
-
@ukanuk i had been using Pale Moon, and Firefox previous to Vivaldi. It wasn't an issue that i noticed until Vivaldi. I had assumed all browsers had a well functioning method of dealing with online pdf viewing. Guess some are still challenged by the concept.

modedit split from https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/24240/save-opened-files-in-temporary-folder/48
@astro46 If you enable the Internal PDF Viewer in Settings, Webpages, Plugins, the PDF files will be downloaded to a temporary folder.
-
@Pesala yes, i have it checked. I click 'open' when the download dialog opens It still requires me to go through the "save as" routine (even though I didn't click 'save as', I clicked open, navigate to a folder to save to, and generally visit that folder later to delete. craziness.
edit: clarifiction
-
@astro46 Not for me. I just open the PDF file in a tab, read it, and close the tab. Save as.. is an option if I wish to keep the PDF file.
-
@Pesala read my edit in previous post. this isn't how it works for me all the time. sure, some pdf open immediately in a tab, but some require the saving routine. Don't blame it on the web site. If I click 'open', rather than 'save as' that is what i expect to have happen.

It's the same for me. Some PDF's open directly in Vivaldi, others show the Save dialog like any normal file download.

- The first link shows the download dialogue. If I click on Open, it opens the PDF in a new tab. It also saves the file in the Downloads Panel and my default downloads folder.
- The second link opens the PDF in a new tab
Everything seems to be working as expected. The PDF plugin is enabled.

Same here.

@pafflick So what is the difference? The handling of the two files on the page looks the same to me in DevTools... But I'm not sure what to look for. Is there some clue inside a PDF about how it should be handled?
My results are exactly like @Pesala 's. I've totally wondered why some PDFs have to end up in my downloads folder when I only want an online peek!
-
@Pesala Confirmed, same behavior. However, this request was also born for other files, such as .zip and .rar for example, not only PDF. Personally i prefer to use the external PDF reader.

No, it's handled differently by the server.

I was wondering if you'll get this specific behavior, as I was unable to reproduce it myself. Since you said that it works just like it worked for @Pesala (which is the expected behavior), can you give me an example of a website where the "Save As" dialog pops up even though you click on the "Open" button?

A website should include a line of code in .htaccess defining the PDF file type:
AddType application/pdf .pdf
If it lacks that, the download dialog will appear, and clicking Open on that will open the PDF in a new tab, but the PDF file will also be downloaded to your default download folder and saved in the Downloads Panel.
That is why we need Support for MIME Types so that we can define what Vivaldi does.
