Vivaldi crashes trying to close certain tabs
-
Tried to close Grooveshark tab several times and Vivaldi 1.0138.4 kept crashing. Went back to previous build and reinstalled latest version to get rid of it. I then came across someone else with similar problem: dovernh stupidly I looked at his example and same problem, I couldn't close the tab without Vivaldi crashing. This time I managed to get rid of the tab using Windows task manager. I wouldn't recommend trying these sites but if there's two there might well be more.

I just loaded Grooveshark in a new tab, played some music and closed the tab without crashing.
I am running V 1.0138.4 x32 on a Win 7 x64 home built machine with 16gb ram. I tried the site a couple more times but I could not duplicate the crash. Sorry I can't help.

I got the same thing accidentally clicking a link that was a bulls**t tracking ad link from taboola.com
Tried to close the tab and crash, reopen with tabs reloading crash. Reopened with a right click speed-dial selection to get focus on a different tab. Then killed the offending tab in task manager. -
I haven't tried Grooveshark again but it was the other link (dovernh's) which gave me the biggest problem. After shutting down my PC every time I started up again and opened Vivaldi there it was again and to make it worse it has an audio/video with it which auto starts, not something you can ignore really. Vivaldi's task manager's End Task had no effect so it was a matter of choosing the right process to end in Windows task manager. Clearing history and emptying the cache did the trick.

Not sure if I understand you correctly here. Would you summarize the exact steps to re-open Vivaldi "with a right click speed-dial selection to get focus on a different tab"?
I had a situation last week where I had several tabs open and tried to open a link from one of the tabs in a new tab (tried to open vivaldi://settings link in a new tab from vivaldi://vivaldi-urls page in this case, but not sure if that is relevant). The whole browser immediately crashed and on each restart, all tabs would attempt to load for several seconds and the whole browser would crash again. I repeatedly tried to close or stop the loading of the new tab before the browser would crash again, but they were basically non-responsive while still loading. IIRC, after 6-8 cycles through the process, I finally succeeded in closing the new tab before the browser crashed, and was able to proceed.
Maybe not exactly the same situation, and I'm not sure being able to get a Speed Dial with focus on the Speed Dial would have prevented the crash (as all the other tabs would still be attempting to load, possibly leading again to the crash?). But I didn't know any other way to open Vivaldi without all the previous tabs (other than copying the Current Session and Current Tabs files from a different Vivaldi installation to the problem installation).
So I'm wondering if the procedure you're describing might help in such a situation.

Sounds the same as what I had happening, tried to reopen by clicking on Vivaldi in my quick start bar and it would crash before I could close the offending tab.
Then I found, and I didn't know it was there, that a right click on the quick launch icon in the task bar brings up all of my speed-dials links. I selected one that was facebook, google or whatever and the browser didn't immediately crash with redisplay of the offending tab. Then I could go to the Tools|Task_manager and kill the tab that I had a problem with. I don't know if it's repeatable, maybe it just bought me enough time to get in and kill it but I will certainly try it again if that happens.BTW it was also content from Motley Fools web site, similar to that mentioned in the first post (dovernh's.) It was linked to a taboola tracking ad network. The crash originally happened when I tried to close that boring tab. Might be worth blocking that domain lol.

Thanks for the reply.
If you have a quick launch icon, I'm guessing you've been using a standard installation, whereas I have only been using standalone installations (that don't create any Desktop, Start Menu, or Taskbar shortcuts).
But I just tried (on Win7) creating a Desktop shortcut and pinning a standalone executables to the Start Menu and to the Taskbar. As expected, the Desktop shortcut provided no special right-click options, but the pinned shortcuts both in the Start Menu and on the Taskbar listed my most recent 10 URLs (not Speed Dials in my case). I had no idea Vivaldi would do that, but it's nice to know, and now I understand what you meant.
Thanks again!

Use the task manager to close the problematic tab -> Vivaldi menu-> Tools -> Task manager.

Hi, beBoss. Not sure if you're replying the the OP, Rainspa, or if you're replying to huskerpick and me (gdveggie).
If replying to OP, Rainspa, closing from Task Manager might work until whatever bug is involved gets fixed.
If replying to huskerpick and me, the situation is that once the crash-restart cycle starts, the whole browser crashes and then re-crashes upon each restart before the browser or any tabs become responsive to user input. So there is no opportunity to start Vivaldi's Task Manager before it crashes, and it is difficult or impossible to close a problem tab before the whole browser crashes (although I think I finally succeeded at that in the situation I described after 6-8 attempts).

gdveggie is right I couldn't get to the Vivaldi task manager until I did as described above with a right click open on my standard windows install.
