What is stopping you from using V all the time?

How can anyone use this without web-apps?
I do, mind blown?

@joshuarobison I do not, and never have, used web apps.

So many frustrations. I want to love Vivaldi, but:
I have several times a day when everything just freezes solid for, oh, say 60 to 90 seconds. (With only Vivaldi running and only one tab open.)
I cannot log into SYNC, for some reason, and can't seem to get a response as to why.
Possibly related to the previous point, I can't change defaults (such as start page or search engine - and I just can't do bing).
I'm not sure what the little gear icon at the bottom of the sidebar is supposed to do, but all it does is resize the page I'm on by about 3%. It's very strange and meaningless, which concerns me.
So, though I like the perks, it just can't work for me as a replacement for Chrome. Not yet at least.
Because I know someone will ask, I'm on a mac-mini (2011) High Sierra 10.13.6

Hi, the gear button open system settings, something is wrong with your installation of Vivaldi. Make sure you have write permission in the Vivaldi directory.
Path is published in File > Help > About
and one directory above.
Start Vivaldi from a terminal, it took me some time to find the terminal on Mac years ago but there is one.
I hope a OSX user step by and can help more.Cheers, mib

@miketodd Unless you are being actively blocked by 3rd party software, it looks as though your profile is likely corrupt. The little gear is supposed to open your settings window, and the freezing and sync problems also point to either a corrupt profile or some type of network blocker.
Try refreshing your profile. Can't hurt, and may help.

What is stopping me? Web sites that need some new/old functionality that is not available in Vivaldi. (Not taking about sniffing.)
-
@btabke I occasionally use an old Firefox version that supports the ReminderFox extension. I also like Firefox's ability to tag bookmarks.
-
I use Brave in my smartphone, because no Vivaldi for Android

@MarcoMora In progress...

“What is stopping you from using V all the time?” Nothing really. For work I have to use Chrome (which I don't particularly like) and some other Google stuff but other than that I am using it all the time.
The lack of an inbuilt mail client was a bit of a disappointment, but ever since I discovered side panels I found I can just log in to my mail, switch to the mobile view and it works!

Nothing for me, ive been using it as my main browser since 2015, love having plenty of options, love being able to separately scale the UI without modding the shortcut. I can't abide chrome it's a typical google if you don't like it tough luck product. Firefox is great but a lot less great since they nerfed add-ons and too slow once you get accustomed to V. The old blurry text with acceleration enabled issue that was my only big V. gripe stopped being an issue for me about 2 years ago so i'm happy.

I'm new to Vivaldi (one week) and really love the browser so far.
However, I've came across some big bugs that have made the browser not be able to be my main browser yet. Or I have to pop over to Chrome.
One thing I submitted as a report already. There's one issue I'm having today that I posted about in the forum (looks like it may be an issue because of the info I have had to give).
I have some minor things that I just expect to work. Also I was in a game two days ago. The keyboard stopped working properly. Then I tried to tab within my game. This actually Alt-Tabbed and brought up all my available things open on the desktop. I couldn't type "M" (for map) in my game, and when I left the game, I couldn't type that letter and others in a notepad. I've had something similar happen before with little software apps on my desktop, and ended up having to not load them when I game. So if Vivaldi is to be my main browser, it cannot interfere with my game or my keys or anything.
I really love the customization capabilities of the browser, and the little sidebar and the fact that I can load Twitter in there is awesome. However, I need DARK everything (and use Dark Reader extension to color the pages) and Dark Reader does not work in the sidebar. So I can't load any page that isn't natively able to be dark. Twitter - yes - I have the dark mode on. Lifehacker? No because it doesn't have a dark mode and it's blinding white in the sidebar. So I can't really use that bar how I'd like.
I really like Speed Dial. I'm hoping that my setup will sync to my new computer build so I don't have to redo it. I'd like to be able to have my setup on Mobile too, without having to copy+paste any files or anything.
I'm really excited to use this browser! I just hope the annoyances get fixed quickly enough. AND I HAVE TO SAY! This is the only PC browser so far that doesn't flash white pages between loading pages with Dark Reader installed. I haven't seen one white page flash yet. It happens still on Chrome and I stopped using Firefox. Kiwi browser on Mobile is natively dark and does not do any white page flashing at all. So Vivaldi, my eyes are counting on you!

@lisating , welcome to the community.
If you like dark mode on all pages, Dark Reader is obviously a good option. But there are also other possibilities. You can use the invert filter, which you find by clicking on the <> symbol in the taskbar. Also a possibility is Chromium's Dark Mode itself, which you find by typing in the search bar "vivaldi: // flags" and looking for Dark Mode in the list. This works also in Vivaldi mobile. I have placed vivaldi: // flags on the webpanel, so I always have access at any time for some adjustments. -
@lisating
Hi, extensions are not supported in the sidebar/Webpanel but there is a feature request already.
The speeddial is only a bookmark folder and is synced.
Speeddial custom thumbnails are not synced yet.Cheers, mib

Far superior to Dark Reader is an extension called Stylus. It gives you much more customization abilities than just changing the colors and you can make the dark theme use whatever colors you like. Easily apply different customization to different sites, have it not apply to certain sites. Once I discovered Stylus I quickly got rid of Dark Reader, highly recommend it. If you need any help don't hesitate to ask. You can also download styles for numerous sites that were crafted by other users either by visiting the user styles website, or directly from within the extension when you visit s website that you want to apply custom styling to. It works on all pages that extensions have the ability to modify (certain pages are off limits to all extensions), and this includes making the pages dark in web panels.

As far as the keyboard thing, I have encountered it before - though not in Vivaldi. It happens if you switch active programs while a modifier key was pressed (such as Alt or Ctrl).
I used to use an external spell-checker that would sit in the systray; a floating icon would change as you typed to indicate whether a word was correct or not and there was a shortcut to press for a list of suggestions. Unfortunately the shortcut involved the Alt key, and after selecting the correct spelling whatever program I had been using didn't know the Alt key had been released. I would have to press and release Alt again before the keyboard returned to normal.
I refer to this as a "stuck key", though it is not in any physical sense. What you describe sounds like that.
