Washed too hot? Vivaldi extremely shrinked
-
Hi there, I'm running latest Vivaldi on a Linux Mint VM, and I have the problem that the GUI of Vivaldi is extremely shrinked since the last update. Menu text, tab captions [does NOT affect web page content!], etc. have become what a graphic designer calls "ant shit" (unreadable, extremely small text). Should be fixed in the next release. It strikes me that the UI CSS must become somehow corrupted on some people's installs - and the UI zooms 'way in or 'way out. So far it seems, no on knows how this happens. Seems to me if you renamed your profile folder and then reinstalled, that would fix it, and then you could move in the relevant bookmarks files etc. and re-set your settings the way you like them.
But tiny and huge UI's that occur with no known cause, have been reported.

Maybe a side effect of some HDPI code addition ?

If Vivaldi is starting to try to implement some HiDPI capabilities, you might have something there - the browser mis-identifying someone's display or GPU…

Well I think would be surprising if they didn't any work on that side.
HDPI is starting to be a common configuration, and a common problem for many programs.
In linux the matter is even worse because different distros are using different combinations of dpi scaling and font sizes, and because those parameters can be used both at low level (general xorg server configuration) and at higher level (desktop environments configurations).
I dot have big experience on HDPI machines, but I read that Opium guys had hard times to get the HDPI stuff in a decent state.

My machine doesn't quite qualify as HiDPI …

(…) Seems to me if you renamed your profile folder (...)
The only thing I did was updating the package via Linux's global updating program.

I didn't mean that your machine was an HDPI one, I supposed that the browser misidentified your machine as it was.
Anyway try to rename your vivaldi data profile folder to see what happens in a clean condition

No, I was saying I didn't have the equipment to reproduce the issue. :p Though perhaps I could fake my resolution…?
Looking at the program in Windows, I notice the program folder includes what appear to be two skins - one listed as 100 percent, the other as 200 percent. I gather that his resolution is high enough they used to use the 200% skin but due to some change in logic they now use the 100% skin. (In Linux such items are as likely to be in some /usr/lib/vivaldi/ folder as in the actual program folder.)

I understand that. I was offering a course of action - not proposing a theory as to what you had already done.

That's interesting. Now if there is a way to force one skin or the other, we may have a temporary workaround for people who experience this.

Well the most obvious way is swapping the filenames, but looks like only the menus are affected not the whole UI.
