Auto tab stacking not working
-
@Pesala I checked for updates on the computer that isn't working, and it says I'm up-to-date...not sure what else to try?
-
@secondsout You are using Stable, and do have the latest Stable version installed.
-
@Ayespy Should I be installing the snapshot or stable?
-
@secondsout Snapshots are potentially less stable (kind of like a Beta) and are updated about once a week. Stable is expected to be more, well, "stable," and is updated every six to eight weeks or so. You can install them side-by-side if you wish, so long as you install one of them as standalone.
If your two installs on two machines are behaving differently, it can be because of different extensions, or because something has happened to the profile of one of them. You can refresh your profile to test that.
-
@Ayespy The link to refresh profile is in a different language?
-
@Gwen-Dragon Unfortunately, the 'refresh profile' didn't change anything.
-
@Gwen-Dragon Now it's not working on my other computer...closed the browser, and re-opened, and now tab stacking doesn't work...
-
same problem here
-
@Gwen-Dragon So, after doing some testing, I've installed a new clean version of Vivaldi, and tab stacking works again.
So, copied over the 'default' folder from the profile refresh, and then tab stacking didn't work again.
So, after lots of testing, have learned that the only file that 'breaks' tab stacking, is the 'preferences' file, if I copy that old file to the new Vivaldi....so, not sure how to proceed, or what in that file is breaking the tab stacking? Any hints?

@Pesala said in Auto tab stacking not working:
@thrust26 How are you opening a new tab from the current tab?
Clicking on the link using the left or middle mouse button. Is that relevant?

Clicking on a link using the LMB would not always open a new tab, hence no tab-stack even if this option is enabled.
Middle-click or Ctrl+click to open the link in a new background tab, or Shift+click to open a link in a new foreground tab should both work.
It's a known bug that a mouse gesture to open a link in a new tab will not open the new tab in the stack, even with the above option enabled.

That fixes is for me too. But that's not a valid solution, IMO. My preferences are almost 1MB, the default one is less than 10K.

Nope, not working for me too.

I found the problem. There are two settings regarding tab stacking that are important when enabling auto-stacking.
This And this If either one of those two is disabled, tab auto-stacking will not occur. This must have been overlooked by the developers because the second setting is no longer relevant when one wishes to enable auto-stacking.

That fixes it for me. Thanks!
So the new option automatically creates a new tab stack only when the current tab is a stand alone tab. And the 2nd option keeps all new tabs withing the current tab stack.
BTW: This should be documented in the settings UI. Or the option should be disabled if the required 2nd option is not selected. The current behavior is not consistent.

True, but as I said, I think that this was overlooked by the developers. In reality, these two settings should not be linked at all, so I would consider it more of a bug.
-
@Gwen-Dragon Already did. Bug report is VB-49163

This is great but it could be better. For instance, I keep 2 google search tabs stacked side by side. I want tab stacking but not on the google stack because that would be a nightmare. It would be nice if you could right click and choose stacking or not.
-
Actually no. I'm a lazy bastard. But I did 'request' it as a regular post.
