Last Update Slows Down Vivaldi on Mac
-
@mbert Does this same problem happen every time you us Vivaldi? Does it also occur if you launch Vivaldi and then immediately quit vs. launching Vivaldi and then using for several hours? Also how many open tabs do you have open, while you are working and at the time that you quit Vivaldi?
@mbert @TiLT What extensions do you have installed?
@mbert Before you quit Vivaldi, could you please open the Vivaldi Task Manager (it's in the Tools menu) and get and approximate count of how many Tasks/Processes are running and then count again when Vivaldi appears to hang on Quit?
It looks like we have two problems:
- Slowness - that's usually a resource-related issue -- some task consuming an extraordinary amount of CPU or memory. It's also possible that it's an issue that's internal to the browser.
- Lingering tasks/processes - Something is preventing Vivaldi from shutting down in an orderly manner. (Could it be the same "internal issue" that's causing the slowness or perhaps Vivaldi not handling an event correctly when a tab unloads or when it's in a discarded state on shutdown?) When this happens on macOS, Vivaldi appears to hang when you quit. On other operating systems, it leaves "ghost" processes.
Back to the Vivaldi Task Manager question, when Vivaldi hangs, does VTM show a single (or small number of) tasks that are left running or several? Does closing open tabs one-by-one allow Vivaldi to shut down cleanly?
Thanks!

The application feels slower from the start. But the problem seems to get worse the longer I am using it.
I usually have 20 tabs or more open of which about 15 are always open while others come and go.- Google Translate.
- Social Fixer for Facebook.
- User Agent Switcher for Chrome (disabled).

Hang on, I have to upgrade Vivaldi again, I'll post another followup later.

I don't think it's only slowness. The interesting thing is that the UI is often blocked. I.e. while some pages are loading I don't get a mouseover feedback on the toolbar etc. That's something I have not seen for very long in any modern browser.
I'll upgrade again now and then see what I can find out.
-
@xyzzy I have a ton of extensions to be honest, probably more than most users. Interestingly, I have no overlap in extensions with @mbert, so that seems to point to some other cause.
I haven't noticed Vivaldi use any more CPU than usual, though I haven't really paid very close attention. I did notice, however, that CPU usage spiked dramatically when closing the application. The last time I did that, I had two leftover Vivaldi processes that each used 15% CPU (on an i7 system with 8 cores). I had to kill these to reopen the application.
-
OK, I'm back on 2.2 now. So far it works just fine, no sign of slowness.
I'll keep the task manager open in the background and observe how it behaves further. -
Thanks. FYI, a few months ago, the developers fixed a similar-sounding problem where some Mac users could not Quit Vivaldi. If I can get this new glitch to replicate again with a clean install on macOS, hopefully it won't be too hard to figure out what's causing Vivaldi to get stuck.

Very heavy lagging here too (Win8.1 x64), opening a tab 3-4 seconds, opening some pages 15-45 seconds (some still open in just under 10 secs), clicking on extension icons takes some 5secs to popup their options.
Overall veeeeeery slow, at times very unusable since the slow pages also freeze the whole browser while they load for 15-45 seconds, can't click on other tabs or close the tab and so on. Tried with no add-ons and it was the same.Feels like some resource loading halts the whole browser (which probably should be loaded in the background), just guessing here.
Win8.1 x64

Just a little update. With the upgraded version running non-stop for two days now, it's getting laggy again. In the task manager I see a slowly growing number of processes while the number of tabs has been pretty much the same (additional tabs were always closed thereafter). I'll wait for it to get still a bit laggier and will then close it while observing the processes that take very long to be finished.
-
@mbert I have it lagging quite a lot right from the start, if i wasn't so lazy and in holiday mood atm. i'd be checking on developer console what might be the culprit, atleast some of my problems are page-load specific, when there's a lot of background activity. e.g. https://forums.bit-tech.net/index.php?threads/videos-of-awesome.167629/page-784 that freezes my browser most consistently. (Then again, just opening a new tab takes a few seconds so dunno what's going on in there.)
Win8.1 x64, 16GB RAM, OC'd I7-3770K (yes, slightly older Intel processor, if it might be to do with any of the exploit stuff, then again, Chrome and Opera are working fine.).

Today Vivaldi had got so slow that I decided to restart it. It did not get stuck while restarting but required a considerable amount of time with some processes hanging for a while. These are the processes that were still there for a while after the window hat closed:

I have downgraded again and will continue using 2.1 for now.

I have this issue since updating to (hold on while I deal with another Vivaldi and Opera glitch that is years old in both browsers. I have to Space and or Enter extra couple to three times to keep the highlighted text from butting up against the previous text.)
2.2.1388.37 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
Revision
15234034d19b85dcd9a03b164ae89d04145d8368-refs/branch-heads/3578@{#897}I mostly spend my time moderating a BBCode board with heavy code, text and photo editing.
I refresh Vivaldi very often when editing and since the last update, I must wait 1 to 15 seconds for the pages to reload enough to start working again. Scroll will not work until Tab favicon is replenished and URL bar is completely refreshed. Favicon usually finishes before URL bar, but not always. This seems to be a random yet constantly occurring issue. Doesn't matter if the page if full of 2000 or 5 photos.I've read on this forum, from a moderator, that you all have the most problems with Apple's OS. Understandable and I feel for you but I sure hope you can get this fixed as I just can't use Vivaldi for work in this area because of the refresh time, the problem with Pasting text anywhere in the browser and the lack of a Delete option in Contextual Menus. All these things are crucial to efficiency in my workflow and I tolerated Opera's text highlighting issue but was not moderating back then nor when I started using Vivaldi.
You have one thing that may be a glitch that helps in my moderating but I won't say what it is for fear you will fix it and be just like Firefox, Safari, Brave and others. Thanks to all of you for your time and work on Vivaldi and to the members that speak up as I should have earlier. This was a very snappy fast browser until recently.
OS X OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Mac Mini 2012 I7 quad core.

Somewhere in the last week, I've started noting that Vivaldi may take minutes to become responsive after a mac wakeup (e.g. I leave a meeting, carry my laptop around for a few minutes, and then open it up and sign in again). This may be related to be related to number of windows/tabs (each time I've noticed it I've realized I've got 4-5 windows with 6-10 tabs on each). I'm going to have to try to gather more data about this, but just wanted to note that I'm seeing this pattern.
I'm running 2.2.1388.37
-
@mbert
I went back too since it's unusable for my job as is.
Not using anymore as this subject seems dead without a fix. No fix for highlighting text either.
It was fun to test this browser anyway.Best regards to the developers.
-
So there's a new version out. Let's see how that one works.
-
I had a problem with the new update as well it removed user profiles for me, has anyone else still got access to them (under chrome://settings/people)
P.S. I'm running Vivaldi 2.3.1440.41
-
The new update still has issues. It still feels much slower than the old version I had been using. Also when switching tabs, sometimes still the old tab's contents is displayed. Since I haven't really read any feedback to the issue reported here, it seems to me like it hasn't been addressed or fixed.
I'll revert back again and wait for the next version.
-
Oh, and one more thing. When shutting down Vivaldi to downgrade to the old version it took several minutes to stop. Last processes seen were those here:

One month ago I changed web browser from Opera to Vivaldi I have Version 2.3 an there are problems with the browser still slows down, closes automatically and the pages simply lag.
-
@mbert Thanks for all of your updates. To be honest, I'm not sure why your Vivaldi installation is behaving the way that it is; it's definitely not normal. It's also not typical. I'm also looking at your
ps
output and Vivaldi is using a LOT of CPU cycles.A slow shutdown is likely either caused by something is preventing the tabs from closing down in an orderly manner or Vivaldi not able to save the state of the current session... or both. (Corrupted Vivaldi profile??) Do you have Vivaldi configured to startup with the "Last Session" or the "Start Page"?
Also, how much memory do you have in your Mac and how many tabs do you usually have open?
Thanks for any additional insights that you can provide. I'll also ask internally to get some additional theories/opinions.

I always start Vivaldi with the last session.
Also, how much memory do you have in your Mac and how many tabs do you usually have open?
16 GB memory, about 30 tabs.
-
@mbert Thanks, that helps a lot. You have ample memory, don't have an excessive number of open tabs, and I don't think that the extensions that you are using would be causing any of these issues.
Are you accepting notifications from any sites? I'm now wondering what could be running in the background (e.g. service workers, etc.) that might be contributing to the slowdown, not allowing tabs to unload immediately, or preventing an orderly shutdown of the browser.
