Feature request: IRC
-
In Opera 15+ were for me two main missing features from old Opera 12: - notes (this seems to be functional in Vivaldi) - IRC client. is there plan to integrate it or have it as plugin? I need IRC client integrated in browser because I want links from IRC to open in MY browser, not in DEFAULT browser on computer.

Wasn't there also an ICQ/AIM implementation in Opera some centuries ago?
Well… I think, as ICQ and IRC aren't the same as popular as they was i.e. 2004 or somewhen, I'd prefer an XMPP/Jabber implementation.
Or better - to hit more web standards of a browser - WebRTC.
-
Last best data I could find is that there are fewer than half a million IRC users in the entire world, and falling. Unless the addition of IRC is quite trivial in coding terms, it's hard to understand why the devs would devote time to that, just at this stage.

@RRR13:
Can't this be done via extensions?
I mean, we can't integrate all messaging protocols in the browser, but it would be cool to be able to do it through extensions.You don't really need all messaging protocols. All you need is WebRTC(which is already supported by Blink if I am not mistaken), XMPP and IRC.

@RRR13:
Yahoo! Messenger probably has more users than IRC. Why not Y!M as well? Google Talk, with it's incompatible XMPP, anyone? Facebook Messenger is a must, right? What else?
Did I mention Skype?All of those are XMPP except Skype. You can use Digsby, Pidgin, Trillian etc to talk on all of those services. Good luck getting access to the Skype protocol from Microsoft though

@RRR13:
Are you sure? Cause I go to places like this one who say Y!M doesn't support XMPP and Skype does partially, and places like this one who don't even mention those as supported, places like this one and this one and this one who say they either use other protocols from the beginning or have dropped support for XMPP.
Unless, I'm missing something…
First of all, wikipedia is not a good place to use as a reference.
Regarding Yahoo! messenger, indeed it seems that it doesn't use XMPP, however it has an API available to enable communication from different clients.
Skype really doesn't support XMPP, only communication with Facebook's chat service. Facebook uses XMPP for communication outside the website, but doesn't really use XMPP in it's core so it makes things complicated. Still you can use XMPP for 1 to 1 communication using facebook's service. Google talk supported XMPP, however with the change to hangouts(which I think is tommorow) it will not anymore.
The thing is, ithe fact that they prefer their own protocol instead of an open protocol is the companies' problem. You cannot expect a browser to implement multiple proprietary protocols. The browser can however implement open protocols like XMPP, WebRTC and IRC.

@RRR13 Wikipedia is not a good place to use as a reference no matter whether you, or anyone else, is right or wrong. Wikipedia is not something you can just quote and then say: "See, I was right". Do not use Wikipedia as a reliable source.

It had one. An XMPP implementation based on a MyOpera chat/messenger service with XMPP network federation would have been more successful. Although having IRC in Opera is also nice.
-
I also vote for IRC. I have a IRC window open in my Opera 12, just now.
-
for who likes chatting and downloading is great
i vote for irc, i used it a lot when this was built in Opera -
I would really like to see IRC. I use it all the time.

Personally I am against adding IRC to Vivaldi. There are zillions of IRC clients, why do you need one integrated in a browser? As lots of people mentioned, why not then integrate other protocols? Developers' time is valuable and limited, let it be spent to true innovation!

I mean, we can't integrate all messaging protocols in the browser, but it would be cool to be able to do it through extensions.You could probably install CIRC or something, but yeah.. It's not a great client. It's what you get stuck using if you're on a Chromebook.
The state of IRC clients on Windows is fairly depressing. I do wish someone would write a better one.
