@topcat7736 There still exists a need for clear information about your situation:
- What OS version (1709, 1803, 1809, ??) are you running?
- What Vivaldi build number is installed (eg: 2.0.1309.42 (Stable channel) (64-bit)) in Help > About
- What browser extensions are installed in Vivaldi? (Tools > Extensions)
- Have you ever previously downloaded and installed a Vivaldi version from a non-Vivaldi server?
-
1.Windows 10 Version 1803 17134.345
-
Vivaldi 2.1.1337.36 (Stable channel) (32-bit)

@topcat7736 In your post containing the image (https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/251905), what did you do immediately before that user-select panel was triggered? That is, in an earlier post, you had stated it had only occurred once, after a Vivaldi update. Assuming this image was made at a later time, what led up to it?.
-
@blackbird It's occasionally popping up on 4 computers and isn't a figment of my imagination. It's a Vivaldi screen so Vivaldi must know what is triggering it.

I'm having the same issue here.. it looks like its chrome not vivaldi. I double click on vivaldi and opens a chrome window. with "select a "user".. i had to run run the vivaldi installer to open up vivaldi browser.
I am on Windows 1809, and was having issues after vivaldi 2.0 came out. 2.1 still have this problem.
Can you supply any additional information about this, including:
- Did the problem occur with a Win10 version prior to 1809?
- What specific extensions are installed into your Vivaldi?
- Is Chrome installed on the same problematic system(s) as Vivaldi?
- Is Vivaldi installed into multiple individual user accounts on your system?
- Can you upload a screen capture of the problematic opening page, similar to the one @topcat7736 did just below your last post?

I don't think anyone's suggesting it's your imagination, and the image you uploaded should dispel that even if they had. The question is: what's causing it to appear in your particular Vivaldi installation? I've personally never seen anything like it throughout my years of using Vivaldi - including stable, snapshot, and stand-alone versions - since Vivaldi's first issuance. Unless some kind of repeatable triggering pattern can be discerned, it's virtually impossible for other testers to duplicate the problem... hence it's difficult for them to help troubleshoot a cause, other than speculation. So a primary goal is to isolate the steps (if possible) leading up to each appearance of the problem, seeking a common pattern for whatever is triggering this.
Also, are your Vivaldi programs installed into multiple individual user accounts on each of your problematic systems?

@blackbird
Only one machine has two accounts. The others are single. Vivaldi programmers must know what triggers the request for new user. I did notice that one machine has a 32 bit Vivaldi on it but is a 64 bit machine with 64 bit Windows 10 Pro so today I reinstalled the 64 bit Vivaldi and haven't had the user request on it for a few hours. -
Happened to me I think twice or thrice. Randomly asking me to select a user when in fact I don't have any other users. Though I didn't experience wipeout of any data because I always click my 'profile icon.' But happened to me. Didn't report it though because it wasn't a big deal.
-
@bebotette The times that it happened, can you recall if anything consistent had occurred prior to each problem popping up (eg: updates, OS updates, computer power-up, etc)? Given that most other users aren't running into this, there has to be some kind of in-common 'distinctive' involving the victim systems/installations. Also, what OS build/version (eg: Win10 1803) are you using, what specific extensions are installed in Vivaldi on your system, and do you have Chrome installed?
-
I can't really name an exact incident or condition that triggered these few occurrences. One thing though, they happened when I open vivaldi (not new tab, or not new window from an already running window, but when I open the application per se).
I didn't really take note of what else was going on in my PC. Next time it happens, I'll take notes.
I'm running Windows 10 Pro 1803.

That is not necessarily true. It could be chromium that triggers it for some reason, but it appears like a Vivaldi window because the Vivaldi team has said "the browser is called Vivaldi and uses this logo" (information that is probably used in many different locations).

@komposten
It just happened on the newly downloaded 64-bit version. Windows 10 showed a notification available and I clicked on it. The notification was from Vivaldi which said there was another minor update so I clicked on it. The screen went back to my home page and no update occurred (normal). So I opened Vivaldi to get the update and it put the kitty user page on the screen. -
@topcat7736
While it's an annoyance, the only important thing is for folks to know that if they see the kitty picture they should just left click on it and the browser will continue normally with nothing being lost or missing. -
@topcat7736 ah. That could be important to figuring it why this happened.
Was it a native Windows 10 notification? (ie was the background colour white or the same as your taskbar colour)
I've had strange behaviour occur due to native notifications before.
-
@lonm Vivaldi's updater always gives me native Windows 10 notifications. Clicking on them never does anything (as previous posters have also confirmed). I usually just click on the Vivaldi icon in the task bar instead.
Worth noting is that I have so far never had this user-select problem (though I'm on 1337.20 still, which could explain things if this is issue is related to later versions).Edit: Just updated to latest snapshot. No "select user" screen in sight. (Win 10 1803 x64).

So I opened Vivaldi to get the update and it put the kitty user page on the screen.A while back, Microsoft changed some things in their notification APIs that broke certain user interactions from the notification itself when some non-Microsoft apps send a notification. I believe MS is still 'putzing' around with the API from time to time, so YMMV in getting an apps update to actually occur when trying to trigger it off a Windows notification.
- In this latest episode, was your Vivaldi turned on and/or minimized when the notification occurred?
- If so, was it on its homepage when the notification and your subsequent update check both occurred, or did it revert to the homepage when you clicked the notification?
- Was this on your computer with 2 user accounts or one of your single-account ones?
-
@blackbird
1,2) Vivaldi wasn't started yet. Tell Vivaldi to open and the user page come up. Left click the kitty picture and the Vivaldi browser opens at my regular home page.
3) Occurs on all of them -
@topcat7736 It's probably worth a Vivaldi bug report here: https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/ From what you've described, it seems to involve a Vivaldi startup operation on some systems, and it could involve something in the underlying chromium engine. When you provide information/description for the bug report, reference this thread; once they send you an acknowledgement containing a VB number by eMail, please post that number here to get everything cross-linked. Given that it seems very difficult to reproduce for others and not many users are chiming in with similar problems, the devs may not be able to make much headway with it for a while.
