Problems connecting to sync server (Firewall?)
-
Hi Guys
I installed the latest snapshot (1.16.1221.3) to test the sync functionality. And at home, everything works fine, but at my company PC I get the error (after a successful login): "Failed connecting to the sync server" Vivaldi will automatically retry to connect to Vivaldi Sync in a few seconds".
So my question is there any log file for the sync to isolate the problem (maybe the company firewall or a different setting on my office PC)?
Thanks for your help -
You can try
vivaldi://sync-internals

vivaldi://sync-internals
Hi @lamarca , thanks for your answer. I have already found this page, but unfortunately it does not help me any further. Everything is Uninitialized or false. Should I post the "status dump"?
There is also no traffic log at all. So I do not know why the connection failed -

It's better keep it for you.
There is a Sync Protocol Log On the tab About, where are displayed more Info. At the left top of the same tab Summary do you see "Sync service initialized"?
-
Hi,
@lamarca ... the Sync Protocol is empty and there is no "Sync Service initialized" but the "Summary" says "Uninitialized"
@Gwen-Dragon I think we use a ("silent") proxy. But there are no special proxy entries to be made. -
@iampowder Definitely Sync is blocked. Can you check the port number 4433 status. I told the Sync Dev about your issue.
-
This is definitely an issue with the Sync being unable to contact https://bifrost.vivaldi.com . Proxies are known to sometimes cause issues with this, but the exact reason why is still being investigated. You can try to navigate to that URL in a browser to get an idea of what's blocking it.
-
@julien_picalausa at work, under a squid proxy, i get
Not Found
The requested URL was not found on the server. If you entered the URL manually please check your spelling and try again. Here also autoupdate always fails, asking if i'm even connected to the internet
Of course I am but clearly Vivaldi has troubles when a proxy is inbetween the path.
-
Hi @julien_picalausa ,
same on my side: 404 "The requested URL was not found on the server". My question because of the port 4433 is still pending at our IT department
thx -
Hi, I get now the answer from out IT department
...
I've checked it and yes, we're blocking this port. In general we're blocking all ports except those that are really needed for communication to the outside.
Please understand that we do not see a real business case for opening the port for this browser and the browser's sync functionality.
I know that IE might not be your favorite browser (although this is the only browser where we make sure that all our services run properly) but maybe you want to use one of the other (unsupported but tolerated and mostly functioning) browsers like Chrome or Firefox.
...I am not sure if it is possible but maybe to you can change the used port for the sync to a common used port like 443?

Shouldn't that be EDGE and not IE anyway ???
-
@iampowder Sync is already using port 443 for all snapshot and release builds. Port 4433, which points to our test server is only used for internal and soprano builds. If you are actually seeing a snapshot or official build using port 4433, that is a bug.

I wrongly mentioned the port number 4433.
-
Hi @julien_picalausa , as @lamarca has noted, I did not know myself which port is used - I only asked our support if the port 4433 is blocked.
I am using version 1.16.1230.3 x64.The problem is that it looks like there is no connection to the sync server and I do not know why this is the case. Therefore, it is also hard to try any solutions.
As I have already written above, I only get the message:
Error: 'Failed to connect to the sync server'
Vivaldi wants to retry to connect to Vivaldi Sync in a few seconds.
And in the vivaldi://sync-internals the most points are false or uninitializedIs there anything I can do to help finding out what the problem is?
thx -
@iampowder Ok, from what you said earlier, you are apparently able to talk to the sync server just fine using a regular web request. (Got a proper 404 response and not a complete failure to connect), so there is something with the way the sync client implementation does its request that the proxy doesn't like.
What you can do to debug this further is set up something like fiddler or mitmproxy to capture https traffic on your computer and see what headers you get when trying to use sync and what header you get when navigating to https://bifrost.vivaldi.com manually.
-
Hi @julien_picalausa, I captured the sync connect and the normal connect to bifrost.vivaldi.com with fiddler and get a response header with 200 Connection Established? But during this test I noticed that the browser page during the normal connection does not show a 404 anymore. I get a NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID error.
so again I asked our IT support and the result is that our proxy does not accept the incomplete certificate chain.https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=bifrost.vivaldi.com
I hope that helps a little further. Best regards
-
@iampowder Hlini got around to fix the certificate chain on that server. Is it now working better for you?
-
@julien_picalausa Yes, thank you very much.
-
My sync is all of a sudden not working anymore in some of the latest 2.x snapshots.
I logged out and now by trying to log in again, I get the following error:
When I try to connect to the link mentioned above: https://bifrost.vivaldi.com , I'm getting the following error:
"403 Please update to the newest snapshot.
Request forbidden by administrative rules."- I am using the latest snaphot available
- I disabled my firewall - no change
- I tried restarting Vivaldi several times - but no change either
Anybody have an idea what's going on here? Thanks
-
@gwen-dragon I do have PureVPN but it is currently not turned on. No Proxy either.
