Automatic translation on the fly of text selected, into the right click context menu
-
@newscpq Another nice translation extension is ImTranslator
-
While you're waiting, add Bing Translator as a web panel.
Copy/paste text to translate it, or copy/paste a URL to translate a page.
-
@pesala Due to your comment in Show me your web panels, I'm now using it as well regularly and I can admit I recommend your advice of using Bing Translator for sentences, text or specific word searches.
Nevertheless, using an extension like Google dictionary seems to be more appropriate for an "automatic translation on the fly of text selected" I guess. -
I think adding to Vivaldi the function of translation is not a good idea, since it forces us to use a third-party function (Google, Bing) to have a translator that is useful for something and that probably means an expense in licenses as a function for a browser .
There are no problems using an extension, like the aforementioned IM Translator, which already includes Google translators, Bing and it's own and even, apart from translating words, phrases or the entire page from the contextual menu, it carries a dictionary with voice - -
I was wondering if there is any search engine that could be used to add a translate option to the context menu for selected text?
-
IM Translator
-
@catweazle It is not a search engine.

There is no, apart from Google that also carries its translator. But if there are search engines that can search for pages in a certain language, such as Exalead (54 languages)

Just to add my 2 cents here. The most natural sounding translator is presently DeepL. It doesn't offer 54 languages but does an excellent job. Give it a try.

Currently offers only - English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian and Polish.
-
"Only" is relative. It should cover most of ones needs. I don't have to translate Burmese or other exotic languages every day. However I wish that they expand the list a little (Japanese/Chinese/Korean).

To me the best addon is S3 Translator. As other addons it don't provide immediate translate on the context menu, but it use a very useful popup icon that appears right on the highlighted text. You can also have some other icons/function like copy etc. and also how many second it will be displayed. Give it a try

Deepl is very good, but he has the fault of having to write or paste the text to be translated, which is not very practical. Deepl extensions in the store do not work very well in Vivaldi.
I have tried all the extensions that there are in the store that there are and, either they only offer a translation of a certain language, or they are simple clones of the Google or Bing translator, or they are simply not worth anything.
The only ones that are practical and with more functionality are the Google translator itself or the IM Transalator that brings together Google, Bing and another one.
Maybe when there are better extensions of Deepl, I change it with pleasure, but in the meantime I prefer the IM Translator and keep the Deepl page in the bookmarks for a punctual use. -
