Windows 10 notification "Click here to update Vivaldi" does nothing
-
When Vivaldi sends a desktop notification that "an update is available click to update" to the Windows 10 notification panel, clicking said notification does nothing.
-
I noticed that for a while on my systems too. It just closes with no action. You have to start the update manually (Check for Updates) or start the Update Notifier waiting in the Task Bar.
-
I've noticed that this issue affects other applications as well. I wonder if Microsoft changed the way notifications work and app devs have to catch up.
-
Microsoft definitely did change the notification schema with the Fall Creator's Update, as discussed for other reasons at: https://knowledgebase.macrium.com/display/KNOW7/Windows+10+Notifications+-+1709+Fall+Creators+Update
I don't know whether what you're seeing is a side-effect of those changes or intentional (a notification is, after all, merely an alert about something - not necessarily a vehicle for taking action in response to the alert)... or even if it's related to the MS changes. Given that the notification changes involve notifications only appearing for running programs as well as having a current icon in the Notification area, it's possible that there was impact in what apps programs are allowed/able to do via their notifications.
-
So essentially, app devs need to change their notification verbiage because it's poor UX to say "Click here to do whatever" and nothing happens when you click it.
-
I have this "error" too, I guess. Does it only affect certain people?
It's such an great and (you'd think) simple idea to implement this into Windows; that's probably why it's not working.@gwen-dragon said in Windows 10 notification "Click here to update Vivaldi" does nothing:
The update notifier icon shows up in taskbar and its tooltip says "Click here to update Vivaldi" and that is correct as it works.
But i think the tooltip should be: "Click on Vivaldi update icon in taskbar to update Vivaldi"
Brilliant piece of UI ingenuity there, Microsoft.

@gwen-dragon
I'm not talking about the taskbar. I'm talking about the Windows 10 Notification that goes in the Action Center pane.

That works for me on Windows 10 x64 if i have not silenced the Notifications. It starts the upgrade.
I had tested it with all three versions (Stable, Snapshot, Internal).I'm on Windows 10 Pro Version 1709 Build 16299.248. This isn't the only application that doesn't respond when I click it's Action Center notification, so either we have a difference in build number or something else is going on. Quiet hours is also off.
-
@mluck94 Same Win 10 build. Tried the Win 10 notification "click here" as an update path on one of my machines for the first time today in over a year. (I always update from within the app or by direct download) Worked without a hitch. I'll keep an eye out for the opportunity to try it again on other boxes, to see if it's hardware-specific.

Same version as mine.

Looks like your Action Center is somewhere broken. Your Windows user account may have broken Windows Registry settings after a Windows update. I had this once or twice in the past and to re-create my Windows account. Or it may be a program/Windows app which is interfering the work of Windows Notifications.
It works for apps I've downloaded from the Windows store, and the built in Skype app, I can click the notification and it will take me to the message in Skype. But it doesn't seem to work for certain non-Microsoft applications Vivaldi being one of them.

For info, this is not an isolated issue... I have the same problem. Also on Windows10 x64 ( but Home edition).
@mluck94: have you installed Vivaldi snapshots in parallel, in standalone mode? Not sure at all, but I have the feeling that there had been some badly managed interactions between stable and snapshot... Maybe fixed now, but which broke my Vivaldi's install at some points.
For example, I had an other issue where my sessions were lost, due to Vivaldi process (to manage updates, hey...) remaining alive, and I don't remember every details but it lead me to think that snapshot 'standalone' may have been in the way.
I need to try gathering more details on this. -

So, I've narrowed the issue down further. It works properly if I click the notification as soon as I see it, but if I let it dismiss itself into the Notification Center tray it will not work.
Recording 1: Click notification as soon as it appears: https://gyazo.com/3f608b4c84444e5c261d9fdd797032d2

@gwen-dragon Thank you, I sent in the bug report along with my screen recordings.

Same problem with Windows 7.

This is still a problem today February 24, 2021. A notification will appear in the windows notification pane that says to click here to update and you click on it, the notification disappears, and then nothing else.
Interestingly I think it did work once or twice on my laptop many months ago whereas with my desktop it hasn't worked in years. My guess on the laptop is maybe some windows update might have changed the behavior?
