Using GoodSync to sync between computers has problems with extensions and cookies
-
I want to have the vivaldi user data on my "D: drive", where all data is kept. After playing with it for some time, it seemed like the simplest way to accomplish this was to do a standalone install. I uninstalled vivaldi on both desktop and laptop, and reinstalled using standalone mode. Reestablished pinned tabs, extensions, etc, on laptop.
I set up Goodsync to sync the entire vivaldi folder (application and user data) from laptop to desktop.
- extensions didn't sync.
- pinned tabs synced but the un/pw didn't . I had those sites in the 'allowed' list for cookies. on the laptp. (others are saved for session only)
- I can't get in to allowed cookies settings on desktop. "click on padlock icon>site settings>click on left arrow next to www.xxxx.com at top of page>cookies>add at bottom of page." still works on laptop, but on desktop "click on left arrow next to www.xxxx.com" now does nothing.
Any ideas on what is wrong with the syncing process?
What if I just sync " user data" ? Should this still sync extensions, cookies, settings, etc?
can I skip syncing "cache" in user data? it takes the most time.[modedit] added more information to title

@astro46 I don't know "Goodsync" , but that probably doesn't matter.
With Vivaldi the Extensions and Passwords are encrypted using the O.S. Userid (on installed computer), therefore they will not able to be decrypted on another PC.Vivaldi is "in the process" of implementing their own sync, but it is not complete yet and is only in the latest snapshot (not stable).
@gwen-dragon said in Lingering processes on macOS – Vivaldi browser Snapshot 1.14.1047.3:
Some settings are synced yet, some are missing.
But with Sync you will get all 100% settings in next weeks, i hope.
The developers will enhance Sync more and more after they are back from holidays. -
@tbgbe . great. thanks for the info.
So I shouldn't expect extensions and cookies(?) to sync. I don't store passwords in browsers, only in roboform password manager.Login info for specific sites, so I don't have to log in each time is stored in the cookies?
At the moment, what should I manually sync? The whole 'user data' folder? Something else? and how about if I don't sync the "cache" folder? what will be effect of that? slower initial page loads?

@astro46
Hi, don´t know about cookies but extensions and passwords, bookmarks already working on Vivaldi 1.14 snapshot.
Try it as Standalone installation.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin how does 1.14 sync work? computer to computer or through the cloud?
-
@astro46 Vivaldi sync works to Vivaldi Servers.
See the announcement at https://vivaldi.com/blog/snapshots/help-test-sync/ -
@gwen-dragon
Hm, all Extensions work fine for me but I use only 5. -
@mib2berlin Well, the extensions themselves sync fine, it would seem, but not their data.

Couldn't believe it!
Until tested today....

@zalex108 It makes perfect sense. A lot of extensions don't need to use data, and some that do might need different settings on a work PC to a home PC.
There are some things that you might want to share with work colleagues.

I don't understand your comment.
I use different profiles for each scenario.
I could understand that behavior for security reasons, but being like that couldn't be used in a thumbdrive.
Don't know how will behave once Sync will be official.
Ok @Gwen-Dragon,
And do you know about to be used in a ThumbDrive if will be necessary to download the data every time? -
@gwen-dragon
Ok,
I understand it.Then we will see.
Thanks.
