Why some images are downloaded on disk without extension?

Up until now I haven't had any problems downloading images on my disk.
Today I found an image on Google and tried to download it. As a result I have file without any extension and hence unreadable. It weights 128 KB so it doesn't appear emtpy.
If I try to rename its extension manually nothing really changes, it continues being file with extension but unreadable (it should be JPEG image).

The only difference between them which I can see is that the second link has apparent name and extension of the image in the end of the link. The first one doesn't and if I try to right click on it and choose Open As Image the link doesn't change to include its extension as I expected.

When I right click on the first image and choose Download image in the opening File Browser I see it doesn't provide me an extension for the file loading (in the dropdown list below image name) and I can't change that. The only available option is All Files and there should be adjacent extension instead. I can type in its name only.

How to change this behaviour? Why do some image end up being broken after downloading?

That is a "webp" image

I can download as such on my Win 10 Pro and Viv snapshot (using Vivaldi 1.13.1008.30 64-bit)
What are your OS/Vivaldi versions.

To open, edit, save, and convert WebP images, get yourself a copy of IrfanView

WebP images are still rather rare on the web, in spite of their benefits, but the do display in Vivaldi. Images of similar quality to a JPG version may be only half the size.

Some months ago I have converted all my images collections from jpgs and png to webp at 85% for color images, and 65% for greyscale or b/w manga scans, with Irfanview and have saved 90Gigabytes of HD, with almost no degradation of the images, in some cases, with jpgs compressed to less than 80% quality with lots of visible artifacts, webp conversion made them even smoother.
Image saving in terms of disk occupation gets from a mere 10% gain up to 90% (10Mb jpg becomes 1Mb webp).
I don't know about others but I have already adopted webp as my default image format.

To the OP, when I save that image from Vivaldi, on my win7, i get the file name s800.webp so the extension is visible. Maybe you have your windows explorer set as by default to HIDE the extensions of files, which is a major cause of confusion since win95.

@tbgbe I use Vivaldi 1.12.955.48 which it says is the most recent.
My OS is Win7 SP1.

As I tested I can download this image from e.g. Firefox not updated last at least 6 months.

It is - for the "Stable" version.
I just checked my "Stable" (32 bit) and it also did not display the extension (webp).

So if it is a bug or a new feature, it will work correctly with the next Stable version (1.13).
My "Snapshot" is 1.13 RC1, so I expect 1.13 Stable to be released before the end of next week.

@tbgbe The support of WebP is from an update to Chrome unless I am mistaken. Not a new feature in Vivaldi, just one of the benefits that they get for nothing by using Chrome.

@iAN-CooG , @retoree I do have hiding file extensions turned on but that's not the problem - the file downloaded doesn't have any exntension at all regardless the setting.
I suspected that these images are saved in file type other than .jpeg or .png so that's why renaming "image" to "image.jpg" or alike didn't do anything. If renaming downloaded file to "image.webp" instead of "image" with no extension it does work and displays correctly.
I'm not ready to change file type I'm using for images just now, so I think I will wait a bit with what is currently.

@TbGbe ok, thanks. Does that mean that currently stable Vivaldi release (1.12) won't work as expected with the .webp file type and 1.13 stable is going to be?

@zanxer at least in current and previous 1.13 snapshots .webp extensions are in the proposed name in the save dialog. I could be wrong but I always saw the extension correctly added IIRC, I don't know why you don't see them.

Well @Pesala said, it is a feature introduced in the updated chromium engine which is used by the 1.13 Vivaldi (wrt 1.12); so "not working" is slightly misleading.

@iAN-CooG He isn't using 1.13 Snapshots (yet). The extension doesn't appear in 1.12 Stable.
