@gwen-dragon
That seems pretty obscure for an issue of being unable to play certain videos. Some I can play, but not all. If I am the only person to experience this, there should be some setting that was set wrong for my environment, which is the latest versions of Vivaldi and Sierra.
How can one check this issue with the developers? -
@bartinva There has been a lot of activity in Vivaldi's Mac forums lately about video playback issues... Vivaldi relies on the macOS system libraries to play some types of video, and the current implementation of the internal video player requires that hardware acceleration be enabled. Please check your hardware acceleration status by going to vivaldi://gpu
If hardware acceleration is not available on your system, your video driver was most likely blacklisted by the Chromium developers because it caused some problems with their code. Unfortunately, this also partially breaks video playback in Vivaldi. You can work around this (until a proper fix is released) by overriding the GPU blacklist in vivaldi://flags ; it's the first entry in the list. Enable the flag, restart Vivaldi, and this should enable video playback on most sites.
Some iMac users have also reported video playback issues on some sites, even with hardware acceleration enabled. This is a bug in Vivaldi. Unfortunately, there is no workaround.
Fixing video playback on macOS has been a work-in-progress for a while now. Hopefully we'll see a proper fix to address all of these major issues soon.

@gwen-dragon
Thank you, Gwen.

All my hardware acceleration flags are green except for CheckerImaging.
I tried enabling the first flag for overriding and saw no improvement. As before, I can see videos on YouTube but not at several other sites, for example at the ESPN score boards for baseball and hockey.
I keep my iMac up to date, however, it is from August of 2010 and may have a dated video driver.
Thanks very much for your suggestions,

@bartinva It's not your fault at all; it's an iMac-specific issue. Vivaldi needs to change the way that they decode H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) video on older iMacs. YouTube videos play fine if they're encoded with the VP8 or VP9 codecs; playback for those formats is handled differently.
This is a known issue and fixing this is one part of a bigger project to improve video playback on macOS.

Thanks again!

Following as I've run into this issue on a variety of sites. I've submitted bug reports when encountering the issue. Hopefully this gets fixed in an upcoming snapshot.
