Downloaded files always have .bin extension
-
Hi all, does anybody have this problem that every downloaded file have (by default) .bin extension?
E.g. I just downloaded an rpm file, the download confirmation dialog shows it correctly as an rpm:
However, when I invoke the "Save As..." dialog it suddenly becomes a .bin file:
I have to explicitly open the "Filter" drop-down and change to rpm (which is correctly offered but is not the default).
Anybody else?
T.I.A.

Hey,
I do have the same problem and was about to start a topic. Has been happenin for a while now. The files download correctly, as renaming them after the download makes them perfectly usable.
For me it has been happening for the last couple of Snapshots, a few months at least, now. Linux Distro is OpenSuse Tumbleweed.

@gwen-dragon I'm on openSUSE Tumbleweed, KDE plasma 5.
Happens everywhere, no need to have a specific URL... btw if you want to test the same file as the one shown in my screenshots, here is the URL:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/hlavki/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/x86_64/latte-dock-0.7.1-1.1.x86_64.rpmCris

@topha thank you for your confirmation. It seems an interaction between Vivaldi and some kind of configuration peculiar to openSUSE Tumbleweed.
UPDATE: Chromium has the same problem. Firefox behaves correctly.Cris

@gwen-dragon said in Downloaded files always have .bin extension:
On my Debian 9 KDE Plasma 5 with Vivaldi 1.11 Stable and 1.12 Snapshot i get in Save dialog "Filter unknown, rpm" and can save as rpm.
@Gwen-Dragon I can save as rpm too, but the default is "unknown" and the file get saved as .bin (if I don't explicitly chose rpm).
Are you getting this too? Or you have rpm as default?

Hi, I am on Opensuse Leap 42.3 and I donยดt have even the file dialog.
If I hit save it download and store in "Download" directory.
Save as open dialog and show file as .rpm.Opensuse Leap 42.3 x86_64

@cris70 Doesn't happen to me either (Linux Mint 18.2 KDE).
I noticed on your screenshot that the flag (below the filter) "Automatically select filename extension (.bin)" is ACTIVE. Why is this?I have the same as @Gwen-Dragon - the flag is titled "Automatically select filename extension" AND is INACTIVE (greyed out).
Have you tried to deselect that flag (make it INACTIVE) ?

Well, I just reported is as a bug now. Have been negligent concerning bug reports over the past weeks anyhow

@gwen-dragon said in Downloaded files always have .bin extension:
Why did you select the Filter Unknown (Sconosciuto) to save?
Change the filter to Sconosciuto, Pacchetto RPM and all will be good.Perhaps OpenSuse has a bug if it shows Sconosciuto always.
At least for me the Filter unknown is set by default, never selected that.
Issue occured on two different machines, both with Tumbleweed however.

Yes, same for me. Happy to know a bug has been opened and accepted.
Thank you.Cris

BTW I can confirm that deselecting the "Automatically select filename extension" option solves the problem. But the bug remains because, as you can see from the screenshot, V would want to assign the .bin extension to the file.

@Steffie can you reproduce on your Tumbleweed issue from #1 that a .rpm is always shown in Filter as Unknown .bin instead of RPM file .rpm?
Hello GD & All. Until i discovered this thread i had been unaware of this problem, as for me it is very very rare that i do Save As; my usual habit is to directly download, & into the Downloads directory [i run most pgms in Firejail, & Downloads directory is one of the few whitelisted ones available]. So, now that i have seen this thread, as requested i have been doing some testing.
In my Tumbleweed...
... i confirm this Save As -- .bin problem does occur [not just for rpm files, btw], in Vivaldi Snapshot, Chromium, Slimjet... but not Firefox... ie, it begins to smell of a chromium-engine issue...?Here's a pic for my V-SS:
After lunch, i intend to do these additional tests, then will post the results:
- Launch my Maui Linux VM - given that others in this thread have already tested other *buntu/Debian-based distros with Plasma5 DE, i expect that V-SS in Maui will presumably behave correctly re this issue.
- Launch my openSUSE Leap 42.3 KDE VM - given that Leap uses a much older version of Plasma, Frameworks, Applications, Qt & Kernel, this will be interesting to narrow down if this bug is specific only to the newer oS versions, or to oS generically.
One thing we do all now know collectively, is that this bug is not Vivaldi's fault [given as i said also Chromium & Slimjet do it, & btw their chromium versions are older than V-SS].
Anyway, my tummy is now loudly rumbling...
-
@steffie In Maui, it behaves properly.
EDIT: Whoa, OMZ, not so simple... i tried it multiple times in V-SS in Maui. The totality minus one of those times, it worked correctly. That's right, all you maths gurus... ONE time, it self-selected the bin extension. At the risk of seeming gauche; WTF?

@steffie Here's Leap:

Arch with Plasma here also.

Just yesterday this problem came back to haunt me. I was downloading a Fedora27 ISO & its hash checksum. Every time i tried to save the latter, .bin was appended to it. I could not make this stop, so i had to then edit it. Simple to deal with, but a bit irritating all the same.

I have yet to see this in Mageia (another RPM-based distro) though I can't say I was looking for it either. I'll give it a look when I'm home.
-
Now tested in Mageia - no such issue when I download the latest Developer update for Opera (using Save as...) or the latest Vivaldi snapshot (using Save). It does say "Unknown, RPM file" but leaves the extension as is.
His example says "Resource no longer available" so I can't try that. Probably been updated since ...
Remember though, file type is determined by the MIME type reported by the site first, then by extension. Hence the fact I can't reproduce it on the sites I tried doesn't mean much.
And yes, I've always used KDE, so it doesn't appear to be inherent in KDE per se.
