Very slow start, slow tab creation
-
Hello, I have been using Vivaldi on Win and Linux for quite some time, but it starting to become a real pain to use it under linux.
Vivaldi is very slow to start up when there is a lot of tabs and windows open.Today and yesterday, I did some real research to buy a new piece of computer equipment, and on the already 5 windows, with (57 tab + 12+23+30+22), I opened 7 new windows, 3-4 for the same subject because the vertical tab bar was full, and the rest for specific subject.
I have (28 tabs+6+16+34+36+27+this one with 3 tabs).Starting that Vivaldi takes between 3 and 4 minutes. opening links in new tab, creating new tab is slow. Switching tabs is slow. Everything is slow. It makes you want to switch to a differnt browser, but alas, I know that I need vivaldi/opera features too much.
While I could understand that that much tabs might be slow on a slow computer, when I open vivaldi, cpu is doing nothing really. on the 16 virtual cores of the dual xeon workstation board, there is no cpu shortage. disk side, with the full operating system running as root on nfs of a remote server with 50~gb of ram, everything is in ram on the other end and there is no hard disk activity at all when opening it. Plus anyway, those tabs are not even loaded : if I click on a tab different from the selected tab of the window, I have to wait for it to load the page from the net. There is no reason that the starup time, new tab time should be that slow, only thing it does int seems would be to load the favicon (ok there are more than 200 favicon to load here, but not to the point to slow down that much).
are there user that open as much window/tab as me here ? how does it work with you? during a time I had this issue then found that I could archive whole window by saving them as session and checking "only tab of this window" so I could clean up a little bit and improve the performance, but right now I still have 6 tab of thing that I need to do and don't want to archive them because "vivaldi" can't put up with it.

@thekingmen Does it shorten the starttime when you clear your download history?

Hi, this sounds like you running out of memory and system starts to swap.
Vivaldi start and open in a few seconds on my system but I have not open so much tabs, windows in my lifetime.Opensuse Leap 42.1 x86_64
CPU Intel T4200 4 GB
GPU Intel GN 965

I wondered this too. I usually have LOTS of tabs [dozens] open [& my setting is to open with last session], & V-SS is acceptably snappy for me... nothing like the lag OP reported. But then, i have bucketloads of RAM...

@zaibon, I tried you trick but it did not change the startup time. There was only 20 entry.
@mib2berlin, this would make sense, but it's not the case. Vivaldi is open with only 10 tabs loaded, and I am at 4.9gb out of 22 available. Sure after real browser usage, when I close Vivaldi I may get 8-10 gb of free ram, but the system is never ram bottlenecked.
Yesterday I tried to check the gpu acceleration. I am using the binary nvidia, and it seems that part of the acceleration is disabled by default. For example rasterization. I forced it to activate yesterday but that did not change a thing. On a side note, I might have found part of the issue. It seems that when starting vivaldi, it takes 100% of a core. During 3 minutes... So I might have a cpu bottleneck, but ... what the hell we are in 2017, I have 16 cores, Vivaldi! Please.
So, any idea on what to do with this ? I don't know which part of vivaldi during the startup takes that much cpu usage.
Also, I have found similar usage slowdown on windows, simply open as many window as you can (with 1 tab each). when you reach 15-20 you will notice how much longer it takes to open 1 new window, or open 1 tab.

Hi, I would start with a new profile, rename your old "default" directory.
Vivaldi create a new one at first start and you can copy bookmarks, notes and so forth later.
Passwords and extensions have to reinstalled.
If you have many password stored you can export/import them.
vivaldi://chrome/settings/search#pass is the setup.https://help.vivaldi.com/article/full-reset-of-vivaldi/
