Why no background tab load?
-
I notice that Tabs when opened, do not load unless they are in the foreground. I do not understand this behavior and see no option to override it. As example, with only the Start Page and 2 Tabs open, both tabs already loaded, so there is nothing for Vivaldi to do, I have 9 instance of Vivaldi running. Yet if I open a new tab in background it will not load until clicked. It seems a rather bizarre design decision. While I am reading one tab it seems to good time to be loading the others in background so that I don't have to wait when I switch tabs. Is there maybe a secret command line switch to override this?

It's the lazy tab loading.
And is a great feature to not overload the CPU, and to help to not waste data on limited bundle connections.
Some option to tailor it better for people who don't understand its purpose or just don't need it, will come surely.

Thanks for the reply. Yes. I know what it is. But to me it defeats the purpose of a multi-tabbed browser. I am sitting reading one tab meanwhile no advantage of the idle time is being taken. I may as well just open in a new window. I noticed some other post about the tabs loading after minimize and restore. Maybe I'll try that as work-around until there's an option. It seems to me if you want to take it easy on the processor you would not launch 9 instances of the exe. Chromium seemed to like to be limited to 4 instances for awhile. Then the behavior changed. Seems as soon as I get something tuned with this rush to bump up the version number nowadays, the thing is obsoleted in 3 months.
I am starting to think it is all an exercise in ground shifting. As soon as the user get settled, oops here come the updates!

+1! Opera does this - load background tabs opened with ctrl + left mouse button. Opera also loads all tabs at startup. I really miss this feature so I'll go back to Opera for the time being until Vivaldi brings an option for this.

Well not exactly.
If you open a tab say a search, and you middle button on the first 10 search items all the items will be opened in background, coping well with the idea of the mutitab browsing.
The lazy tab feature is intended to not load avoid to load maybe 40/50 tabs at once, given many ex oper user are used to to use the tabs as a sort of alternate bookmarks and many of them tend to keep opened a bunch of tabs even the ones looked once per week.
What is not so good in the actual implementation is related mainly to dynamically updating tabs (webmail, chats, social networks).
Those should have a configurable whitelist .

That is what vivaldi does as well (obviously I would say)
Opera also loads all tabs at startup.
No that is not true. Opera loads all tabs on startup if the lazy loading feature is disabled.

and still no option for vivaldi. so opera is much better than vivaldi atm

1.5.604.4 (Developer Build) (32-bit)
settings/startup now has
Lazy load restored tabs
this should make some happy. -
I have lazy tabs disabled, and they still won't load until I view them.
Also, after restoring tabs via File > Open Saved Session, the tabs (including pinned tabs) are never in the same order. -
