Brave Browser to Launch Its Own Search Engine
-
Brave is starting a search engine. Here's an except from Matt Southern's article:
Brave, makers of an open-source web browser, are launching a privacy-focused alternative search engine that will offer options for ad-supported and ad-free search results. Following Brave’s acquisition of Tailcat, a search engine developed by the former Cliqz team, the company announced its forthcoming product known as Brave Search.
[...]
The Tailcat search engine will become the foundation of Brave Search, which will be integrated into the Brave browser. Brave Search will also be accessible outside of the company’s browser by navigating to brave.com/search – though if you go there right now all you’ll see is the option to sign up to the mailing list. -
@Eggcorn Yeah, we're aware they've bought a search engine. And as an additional revenue stream, they will let you pay to not have ads in it, or "pay" you in their own tokens for looking at their ads, or whatever.
-
@Ayespy We're already aware? I didn't see a thread about it.
-
@Eggcorn It's been all over tech news ever since the deal was struck. In fact, I could almost swear you're the second person to post about it in the forum.
-
@Ayespy Well, it's one thing to know about it. It's another to have a conversation in the forum about it.
-
@Eggcorn I didn't say there was a conversation. I said we knew about it. "Know" and "conversation" are not equivalent terms, yeah?
-
@Ayespy Fair enough.
-
Their own way of staying out of FLoCing... and still making money.
-
@greybeard What does starting a search-engine have to do with staying out of FLoCing?
-
Vivaldi also can create a own search engine, there are enough modules FOSS selfhosted to do this
SearX
YaCy
Gigablast
Whoogle Search
etc. -
@Eggcorn said in Brave Browser to Launch Its Own Search Engine:

Nothing in particular. They are both part of the same privacy article. It will just a way for Brave to make some money using their digital currency.
-
@greybeard Oh, their digital currency. That could explain this. A search-engine does seem like the next natural step, if they want to get more use out of their currency.
Anyway, I'm glad Brave's coming out with a search-engine. Too many search-engine's get up to scrummy things. But Brave's a name I trust (I trust it about as much as I trust Vivaldi). So if their search-engine turns out to be as good as I hope it will be, there's a good chance I'll be switching to it.
-
@Eggcorn, I don't trust Brave so much, their way of making money can lead to bad ideas, as it happened once, even more so with its own search engine.
Brave's problem is not privacy, but another, no less serious. -
