Coin mining protection

Hi all,

I know a similar topic from 2017 exists in Spanish but it does not answer my question.

Do we have to do something in particular in 2021 to protect against coin mining?

Or is a blocker like ublock origin enough?

I know there are extensions like no coin (included natively in Opera) or mineblocker (or even noscript) but I wonder if this is necessary with Vivaldi.

@C2A Vivaldi has a built in ad blocker. It should be able to block scripts that are used in coin miners.

You could add this list: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/hoshsadiq/adblock-nocoin-list/master/nocoin.txt as a custom source in Settings > Privacy > Ad blocking > Manage sources

I do not use the native ad blocker because I noticed some time ago it is less effective than ublock origin.

I do not remember precisely but I think it did not manage to block some ads or popups so I stopped using it.

@C2A If you're using uBlock origin, then you could add the list I linked to the extension and it will offer the same protections.

@C2A I use uMatrix as well as the built in ad blocker. I think uMatrix probably blocks most of the unwanted resources, so I don't get much of an opportunity to test the built in ad blocker.

I did not know umatrix and it looks like a power user feature.

Do you think it is technically more effective than ublock origin on everyday's browsing?

How can you tell the differences? Does it block more stuff or do you only get more details about what is precisely blocked? (requests, etc)

@C2A uMatrix is more difficult to use than uBlockO but they are both written by the same author and offer similar kinds of protection. If you want list based protection, uBlock origin is best.
