Electric toothbrush causing jaw pain?
-
I´ve been using an Oral B electric brush for bit more than 6 months. I've noticed that ever since then, i've started having severe dental pain, but I´m not sure if it´s related to my bruxism or if it´s the toothbrush.
i mean, it cleans much better than regular toothbrushes, it's faster, more efficient; however, I have severe pain all over my jaw. But again, don't wanna blame a good toothbrush when the problem might be a hidden cavity or just me severe teeth clenching (to the point where i broke off a molar).
Soooo. Anyone experienced dental pain all over due to an electric toothbrush? I reckon I brush very softly and am easy on my teeth and gum.
But i have no other explanation to a pain so strong that affects both sides of my jaw, and down to my shoulders.
A little freaked out because i also suffer from IST and some other mild arrhythmias, but I had a few EKGs done in the last two months stating all clear, so it´s not my heart.
For now, I´ll pop a few paracetamols in the hopes of feeling better?

Hi,
Since no one has answered,
My suggestion, being I do not use them but know about people using it without problems. Is to use a manual toothbrush for a week or two instead the electric one, and check, (in case you didn't did it yet).

Observe whether is something new since the electric brush appeared.

@dannii I use an eletric toothbrush without any issue. But you should ask to your dentist
Few ideas:- Some dental issue (even a simple gengivitis)
- Hard brush (but usually they have a medium/soft brush)
- Smoking (I hope you don't do that with arrhythmia)
- A period of heavy stress (especially for back pain)
- Some mild medical issue (ask your
)
- Too much acid "foods" (alcohol, caffeine, ecc ecc)
- Paracetamol could help, but also a good OTC mouthwash will help.

If you have a 3d Oral B it may may be the cause of your pain.
I bought a 3d one some years ago and I switched to a 2d one after first use (for being too brutal).
I found people complaining about 3d electric brushes as they lost some of their dental fillings after using them.
Give a try to a 2d Oral B brush. -
@stilgarwolf hello and thanks for your input! I will give it a try. It's odd because I purchased the sensitive brush heads and also use it in the slowest speed.
I am brushing manually for now, as I also noticed I cracked a molar and it's pinching my skin. Paaaiiinnnn.

... I also noticed I cracked a molar ...
That's because 3d toothbrush moves as a brush but also as a hammer.

After only a month of using the Oral B, PRO 500, 3D, I found that I had pain in my teeth and a small section of my gums where one tooth was missing.
I also had pain in my jaw from the very top to the bottom and that pain radiated into my ears.
I was quite alarmed about the jaw pain as I have had TMJ issues for many years.
I was convinced that it had something to do with CPAP therapy which I have been on for six months.
my doctor assured me that the pain wasn't caused from the CPAP therapy so here I am googling information about my electric toothbrush.
I am so relieved to find that the cause of my facial pain is, most likely, caused by my electric toothbrush.
I am relieved, not just because I have an answer, but because I don't even like using the electric toothbrush. It is too big for my mouth and too brutal.
Also, after 6 weeks of use, with the help of a magnified mirror, i found that, even though I thought I had been thorough, I hadnt been able to properly clean my lower front teeth.
I had to scrape them with a large sewing needle!
I will be going back to my normal soft, manual toothbrush and feeling grateful for it.
the reason I decided to get an electric toothbrush, in the first place, was because I have arthritis in my hands and had trouble holding the skinny toothbrushes.
i am now motivated to find something I can put over the toothbrush handle to make it easier for me to hold.

Also if @dannii has cracks in a tooth (which I have no doubt about, because the tooth is now broken), then the bacteria from the toothbrush can permeate inside the tooth. I had a problem that my teeth ached after brushing, but by the middle of the day, the pain was gone. So I realized something was wrong with the brush and bought a sanitizer for the brush. And the pain was gone.
Also, you said about acid foods but didn't say about coffee. It is acid food too.

Yes you're right, I think it was a mix of those issues. Hard brush being one of them. It's hard to get the super soft ones for Oral B here.
I've quite smoking 11 years ago
Period of heavy stress: CHECK
Mild medical issues : CHECKI checked with my dentist.
Sorry for the late reply! Been around the world, like literally xD

Oh yes, the cracked tooth now is GONE. As in, half of it disappeared
Funny thing is that the dentist decided to repair another not so damaged tooth with a root canal first.
I've learnt my lesson the hard way, root canals as crazy and I will have to have the cracked one pulled out.
Oh well, could be worse!

I hope you get well and get all your teeth repaired!
