vivaldi.exe processes refusing to close/kill

Re: 2 tabs open equals 10 vivaldi processes opened
I am at a loss.
No matter what I attempt I continue to have at least 3 vivaldi.exe processes running that will not close using end process, end process tree or windows command taskkill.I have attached images for detail.
Having one tab results in 11 vivaldi.exe processes runningFinal attempt before posting, I downloaded a program titled closeall.exe and that failed as well.
BTW now only using ublockorigin and still get the issue ------ and yes ------ I get this issue with zero extensions running -
@icubud said in vivaldi.exe processes refusing to close/kill:

That's expected, this is how Chromium is designed. Here's one of the many articles across the web explaining why. Killing the processes will cause the browser to not function properly.
For taskkill - what credentials are you running your command prompt under? Did you start it normally?

@Gwen-Dragon
Thanks for the reply.
I am on Windows 7
When I ran taskkill /F /IM vivaldi.exe /T
result was access denied -
@BoneTone
Thanks for the reply - ok abt many processes running; but they have all closed in the past when exiting the program /closing the browser.
Pardon my ignorance but I don't understand what u are asking: "what credentials are you running your command prompt under? Did you start it normally?"
Using windows 7 -
@icubud
Hi, I am not on Windows but iirc there is an auto updater for Vivaldi for Windows.
It is running even Vivaldi is closed, search for it in settings, you can disable it.Cheers, mib

Thanks @Gwen-Dragon
I wonder though what has changed because this was not an issue, then was an issue, then not an issue, but now is an issue again.
I haven't changed settings, added programs, etc.
Just a couple weeks ago, I could do my normal routine in the morning of opening about 12 websites for "news" and read one close it and etc. - no problem.
Now that is a no go. It is a no-go for 2 tabs. Something changed.
I see u are a tester, plz fly this up the flag pole. I can't be the only affected. -
@Gwen-Dragon
4 different times and I got the same crash error message in the thread using the Microsoft Process Explorer programI followed the steps on to reproduce the issue

@icubud Is the
CrashForException
the only thread in the hanging/zombie processes? What's the full command line of these processes?What is the Parent PID of these processes and what is its command line?
What is the user these processes are running as?
Also, again, we need your system information from Help > About.
@Gwen-Dragon Merge please? Or, just close the other thread.

@Pathduck 2/3
yep, I missed the thing about a clean profile.
Why did I write it was the same issue for each tab, because each process when I double clicked on it had the same code. So if that is incorrect understanding on my part, my bad.

Thank you @Gwen-Dragon @Pathduck for your help and patience.
After deleting the malwarebytes plugin and rebooting the issue it seemed to be resolved but .... nope.
I have now deleted the other extensions I had whether using or not and rebooted: issue remains.
I have another laptop, I am going to open vivaldi and see what happens with it so I will be posting later. -

@Pathduck @Gwen-Dragon
System would not allow me to make the post - stating it was flagged as spam. So I took a snapshot of it and uploaded it. -
I decided to uninstall vivadli then restart and downloaded an older version of vivaldi
Vivaldi.3.2.1967.30.exe and also went with 32 bit to see if that would resolve matters and restarted
the computer then installed Vivaldi.3.2.1967.30.exe and restarted computer again and logged in to
vivaldi and so far knock on wood things seem fine. I have now added the ublock origin extension
and if it continues to go well I will add the two extensions save to pocket & archive page.

@icubud Good!
Maybe stick to this one thread for any future updates OK?
It's good it works, but you can't stay with an old version for ever, you will need to update sooner or later. I recommend you stay with the old version until you know it works, install your extensions and use for a couple of days to see if the issue comes again. If not then do a backup of the installation and profile, and update using Help > Check for updates.
For all we know the issue was "solved" with your clean install of the older version, and your older installation was broken in some way. Impossible to know now.
Also, consider updating to Windows 10. If you keep using this old OS you will continue to have more and more problems with software and incompatible drivers.
Good luck!
-
thanks @Pathduck
the issue continues unfortunately
only one extension being used ublockoriginSo its a windows 7 thing considering the windows 10 still no problems (other laptop)(work)
Only posting to this thread per your request.
Suggestions? -
@icubud Too bad
The images don't help, apart from showing that the process has a single thread (ChromeMain), which is unusual. But they are not the same as you showed in your other screenshots (CrashForException...)
What you need is first the command line of the hanging process.
Then the Parent PID of the hanging processes, and give the Command line of this as well.
Also post the User of the processes. Tip: This can be copied straight out of Process Explorer, no need for screenshots.This way it might be possible to understand what is launching these processes and what they are.
Example from process explorer:
Here the Vivaldi PID 5828 has a Parent PID of 9392 which is the main Vivaldi process, this in turn in started by Explorer.
But there is no need to screenshot everything, just the text is fine. Paste the command line in a code block like this:
D:\bin\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe --type=crashpad-handler "--user-data-dir=C:\Users\Stian\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data" /prefetch:7 --monitor-self-annotation=ptype=crashpad-handler "--database=C:\Users\Stian\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Crashpad" "--metrics-dir=C:\Users\Stian\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data" --annotation=plat=Win32 --annotation=prod=Vivaldi --annotation=ver=3.3.2020.3 --initial-client-data=0x12c,0x130,0x134,0x108,0x138,0x70c9b998,0x70c9b9a8,0x70c9b9b4

@Pathduck
thank you.
I have created a .dmp file
I have tried to copy the stuff u ref
Don't know how to get it best to u.
I can provide u my email address and if ok then will delete that post.
Or if u know some other way.
I do know when I tried to get the parent process it came back as
Vivaldi.exe PID 4708 process <non existent>(5000) -
@icubud I can't read .dmp files, and I did not ask for one
A dmp file can be attached to the bug report you send to the Vivaldi team:
https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/
If you've already sent a bug report it can be attached to a reply of the confirmation email.But did you find the dmp file in the Crashpad directory or did you create one from Process Explorer? Not sure how much use it will be.
So the parent PID of the hanging Vivaldi process was non-existent, it's a zombie process like said earlier in this thread.
But I ask once again, what is the full command line of the zombie/hanging process?
-
@Pathduck
yeah I know u didn't ask for one I am just trying to get info - blah blah
https://jmp.sh/JFnC6Ut
contains the pdf of the process explorer and notes
sorry for the dumb and ignorance
