Youtube ads are destroying Vivaldi
-
Having this issue now for a few weeks. Cant get rid of it no matter what AdBlock list I try.
If not fast enough clicking the ad away, it freezes Vivaldi and my CPU gets hot.
Not interested in installing an Adblock extension. Need solutions on this and cant believe to be an exception. Thanks for any advisement.

@twil Whenever I open any YouTube video, what I see at first is a white screen with a button to skip the ads.
If I click the button, the video starts playing at once. If I don't, after five or ten seconds the video starts playing anyway.
You do seem to have a setup that others do not.
Try in a private window. Try with a guest profile. Disable all extensions. If those fail to make any difference, disable hardware acceleration in Settings, Webpages.

I've seen something similar before. In the old case the video window would be black for a few seconds (with no "Skip ad" button) before the actual video started. It probably tried to load an ad.
So I would guess that this new one (white screen with a skip button) is kinda the same. YouTube probably changed how they display ads, but the actual ad content is blocked. So we see a broken ad window thing before the video starts.

I'm having the same issue as the OP. It's been ongoing for about 1-2 weeks. Unfortunately when clicking the "Skip ad" button sometimes input in Vivaldi seems to hang, and I can no longer interact with it at all.
I disabled uBlock Origin a month or two ago due to the fact that Google may be nerfing or breaking the WebRequest API that such extensions rely on in the future, thus making Vivaldi's built-in adblocking the only viable solution once that happens (if that happens). Also, Vivaldi's built-in adblocking worked perfectly fine when I decided to switch to it, so this is either a change in the most recent snapshot, a change on YouTube's side, or a change in an extension that caused this to start happening.
Installed extensions:
-
Behave! (this was the most recently installed extension, and it was installed not long before I began noticing this issue)
-
Decentraleyes (disabled)
-
uBlock Origin (disabled)
-
uBlock Origin Extra (disabled)
I have yet to disable any of these extensions to see if that effects the issue, and will do so now as it's the first logical troubleshooting step.
-
I've yet to see the issue with Vivaldi input hang when extensions are disabled and the "Skip ads" button is clicked in a YouTube video. The YouTube video player is also responding faster when the "Skip ads" button is pressed while all extensions are disabled. I'll see if I can figure out which extension is the culprit.

OK, I have all extensions enabled again except for "Enhancer for YouTube", and the issue with Vivaldi hanging when trying to click the "Skip ads" button in YouTube videos isn't happening. That's a fairly good indication that the "Enhancer for YouTube" extension was the cause of the issue in my case. Some users are reporting an anomaly in the extension's YouTube ad blocking feature (the white overlay covering the video with the "Skip ads" button), so a change to how YouTube handles ads may be the reason for the issue suddenly developing:
https://www.mrfdev.com/how-to-use-enhancer-for-youtube#comment-4988820707@twil do you also have the "Enhancer for YouTube" extension installed? If so, then does disabling it help?
-
@GT500 Yes indeed.
BUT I also disabled all extensions without making progress. -
@Gwen-Dragon said in Youtube ads are destroying Vivaldi:
@twil That white page i the result of Vivaldi Blocker (blocking Tracking + Ads).
You have Settings > Privacy > Tracker and Ad Blocking activated that causes the white page.
Please tell which special block lists are activated "Manage Sources".And more on your uses OS and hardware:
- version of operating system
- version of graphics drivers from chipset/card manufacturer's website
- used security software
- CPU
- size of RAM
- GPUs / graphics cards
- Output of page
vivaldi://gpu
Copy output, hit </> button in a reply and paste
I fear one of your block lists causes the huge CPU amount and freeze on Youtube videos or a problem with video decoding.
Oh boy..
I tried different filters and the problem stays. I cant write them all down. Its tomuch.
But for example, Easylist & Adguard filters causes this problem.Something important I forget to mention:
I have 3 Youtube Accounts. 2 of them have this problem, the 3rd doesn't!

@twil said in Youtube ads are destroying Vivaldi:
@GT500 Yes indeed.
BUT I also disabled all extensions without making progress.I should probably mention that after disabling/enabling extensions, I restarted Vivaldi to make sure that everything reloaded with only the currently enabled extensions running. I didn't test what would happen if I only disabled the extensions and refreshed a tab with a YouTube video, or opened a new tab and navigated to a YouTube video.

Do you use any custom filter lists in Vivaldi?

So after there is no progress showing up, I trought it would be good to take a video-shot.
In all the years Im using Vivaldi and having problems with it, one thing consisted throughout the time: No solution.
I never had any happy end with this browser. Only hard drive swipe and reinstalling windows helped me.In the meanwhile Firefox will help me out.

You can just delete the data in the following folder (with Vivaldi closed), and it will generate a fresh profile (including all settings) the next time you open it.
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data
If reinstalling Windows is the only thing that helps, then you have something more seriously wrong than just browser issues. I'd offer to help, but I don't think this is the right forum for that sort of support, and since you don't know who I am there's no reason why you should trust me to that extent. After all, I just dropped in because I was having the same issue.
