Experiencing a real mystery, and advice - apologies, but****

The mystery was. I use a couple of utilities. Wisecare365, and System Mechanic pro. Both seem to do a good job.
The first wisecare has a defragment hard disk module in and there is a check box, shut down when defragmentation is finished. , and I have about 6 to 8 external USB drives. Running Windows 7 Pro, relatively successfully despite it being Microsoft. When I restarted my computer, the desktop was completely different, all the folders and reminders etc had gone. Could not even access Vivaldi from the start menu.
Ran - after looking around etc, the utilities again, and lo and behold, the windows were as before and Vivaldi could be used from the start menu. What could I do to prevent this from happening in the future. Makes me angry and lots of other things. Anyone any ideas, would appreciate them v. much! Tomorrow if Vivaldi is sill available on my computer, I will put up my slogan for making the world aware of Vivaldi as a starting point.
But I do think an earlier suggestion I made could be very encouraging, namely a competition, where people put up their slogans and have a vote:What do you think Duckz?
Is this how you can inform a user of a post you would like them to be aware of?

First: To notify a user you write their username with an @ in front like this: @britur .Afraid I'll only be able to give general advice as I've not used Win7 for years, and I don't know of those applications you use.
From what you write, it sounds like maybe your user profile was somehow changed on boot, and then for some reason was restored after another boot. Or maybe you booted into Safe Mode, that would surely explain it.
It's like that quote: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic
First thing I'd do is ask myself: Do I really need those utilities? Especially if they cause these kinds of problems. Generally I'm sceptical of these kind of "fixer upper" applications, especially when they promise all kinds of "wondrous" things. I prefer small tools that do one thing really well.
You say you have many external USB drives; do you really need to defragment them at all? Defragment is usually only needed for drives that have a lot of file writes and erases, and external drives are usually used only for storage. Especially if they are on USB which is slow.
I've moved to SSD drives now and they shouldn't be defragmented anyway. But defragment of local old-type drives once in a while is of course a good idea, maybe once a month or so. Unless they're filled to the brink, then you really should consider getting a new drive
Back when I did defragment, I used an application called MyDefragPowerGUI. It's small, fast and allows scheduling. There are other good tools as well: https://lifehacker.com/five-best-disk-defragmentation-tools-5854427
And of course Windows has a built-in defragment tool, but in my experience slower and less powerful than the others.

Biten, but not shy now!
AsI have a bad memory and don't remember usernames that well, is there some kind of list one could go to?
Or
open a new page and go the dialogue one remebers where the target user was?Wish you a great deserved Sunday, am off to an art exhibition tomorrow, sorry7 today now.
