When this community contributes to society at large... (bork! bork! bork!)
-
Was just reading this article about Brexit in the Guardian when my eye fell upon the following phrase:
The same could now be said of Westminster. The system is borked, we can all see that
I can feel proud of this community for creating the term "borked" and making it as far as a piece of serious journalism where - I expect - people understand it but have no idea of its history...
For those who don't know, it's when Microsoft were actively blocking Opera from their websites and Opera responded by releasing an update that translated all Microsoft pages into "Swedish Chef"... the language spoken by the Muppet character(*). As most sentences on the pages suddenly contained at least one "bork!", the IT tech world adopted the term "borked" to mean "utterly messed up"...
(*) You used to be able to do this on Google Translate, but I couldn't find a good online tool to do it any more. Internet isn't as fun as it used to be... Even this forum no longer has the correct "chef" icon...
Also sad to see rubbish like Urban Dictionary completely lying about the origin of the phrase - as usual. Tip: never ever trust anything from that site, it's all BS!
