HTML5 video vs Flash

I've noticed that a number of sites give Vivaldi as Flash plugin for playing Video when it clearly supports HTML5 video. YouTube does the right thing, of course. Facebook doesn't. What can we do to make sites give Vivaldi HTML5 video instead of foisting a Flash widget on us? Wade.

At this time Vivaldi has a problem to play MP4 encoded video with HTML5. But Flash based video players work.
I agree, that HTML5 would be a better goal, most mobile devices do not have a Flash Player, but they can HTML5 video.

And Flash Player is more of a security hole than a browser plugin.

True, but all that hate against flash sounds at least suspect.

Frankly I never faced a real world problem caused by the Flash player itself.

It's way easier to fool the users with fake flash player or codec updates, and the fooled users will remain even on a flash free world.

It is true, Vivaldi doesn't support MP4 yet.
However, ALL BROWSERS with activated flash-plugin will prefer Flash instead of HTML5 on most websites (most notable exception here is Youtube)
Almost all websites now can play video in HTML5 but the great majority of them will "prefer" using Flash if it is activated in the browser. Uninstalling or deactivating the Flash-Plugin in a browser like Chrome or Firefox - and the website will play it's video content in HTML5. I don't know why they prefer Flash though …

Flash video is a proven and tested way to deliver video. HTML5 it's still not so mature.

I simply hate the websites or browsers that forces the HTML5 video even if the flash player is installed.

I need a browser, not a mom.

I just simply hate the websites that force flash (if it's activated) even though their videos could be delivered in HTML5

Seriously? You've never had Flash eat all of your CPU and memory or had trouble playing UHD or even regular 1080p video on e.g. Vimeo in Flash? Of course HTML5 would only solve a few Flash-inherent issues; most are simply idiots forcing annoying junk which wouldn't be any better in JS.

I too think Flash is over hated.
I've certainly had issues with Flash - but then I think we have also yet to experience the worst of javascript. Is a webpage full of crappy js adverts going to be significantly better then Flash? I'm not so sure.

Not to say flash has any place for video these days - open standards designed for the purpose is, of course, better then the "hackjob" that is using Flash for video. If someone could kindly get Apple to support the same formats everyone else is it would be even more simple too.

I'd point out, however, that for the moment there isnt really a Flash alternative outside of video. Vector animation in SVG is no where near as mature. Certainly a website like Newgrounds would be tricky to exist in a Flash-less world right now.

The best thing to do is never install flash on your system. I've removed flash for such a long time now and I don't miss it at all. If I'm desperate I can use Internet Explorer for flash or even Maxthon but that's highly unlikely. If people want BBC Iplayer well they can use the getiplayer software and bypass the need for lame streaming, drm and flash. You'd be surprised how little you need flash so start getting the geek uninstaller out and rip it off that drive asap. I also do not install Java!

Seriously. At least in the last 5/6 years never seen a single problem.

I think that a lot of people that talks about supposed flash problems has other kind of troubles related to spyware/crapware or driver problems.

those spyware/crapware that you put the blame on? yeah flash is also known as a popular vector for them. that means running flash is high security risk and increases your chance of getting infected.

Flash player usually is an indirect vector, because the fake flash upgrade messages used to install unwanted SW on user's PCs.
