Video playback STILL not possible on telegraaf.nl with Vivaldi
-
I have been using Vivaldi for a few years now, and all this time I was patiently waiting till I could play videos in there.
Either I am doing something wrong or the video is way down on the list of "would be nice to have, but not important to fix"
This video - for example, as NO video on this site ever continues playing -
https://www.telegraaf.nl/video/2219726/erdogan-fan-schokt-jinek-tafel
isn't working. Video stutters, then halts, and if not it continues without a sound. Reloading usually ends in freezing up.I encountered it in Windows environments of divers settings and setups (ram, harddisks, videocards) and now in my MAC.
What am I doing wrong - or what is not being fixed in Vivaldi?
-
@rick_nl Working fine for me.
Specs: AMD A10-6800K, 8 Gb on Win 10 64-bit • Snapshot 1.16.1211.3 (64-bit)
-
That video works for me, played flawlessly to the end, windows7 32bit, Vivaldi 1.16.1211.3
-
Also working fine for me.
Win10/64 bit. Vivaldi 1.16.1195.3 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Intel Core i7-7600U @ 2.80 GHz, 12.0 GB RAM. -
I am currently on a Macbook Pro early 2015 8GB, High Sierra 2.7GHz Core i5
Also tried on Dell 8GB intel Core i7I must say I am running the beta versions of Vivaldi however.
So should I look at settings guys? Anything special , or is it running as is?
Thanks for your replies by the way
Rick

@rick_nl Moving this to the Mac forums. Mac video problems are unique to Mac - not "all platforms."
-
@ayespy I have the same problems on Windows - as I specified in my original post. That is why I posted in all platforms... So nothing to do with Mac only.
-
@Ayespy Just tried it on my -yet another - laptop Toshiba Satellite
Vivaldi 1.16.1195.3 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Revision 57267eb755f0796f01b148e027fc18b9e5866aca-refs/heads/master@{#554836}
OS Windows 10 1803Intel Core i5-4210 CPU
Having same issues...
-
@rick_nl Can't reproduce those issues in Windows. Have you tired experiments with enabling/disabling hardware acceleration, checking whether you have all needed codecs? (they do not come with Windows M.) Etc.? It's not a Vivaldi problem. It's a Vivaldi+your systems problem, or something you have introduced with 3rd party software.
And, BTW, Windows, Mac and Linux all have unique media issues. "Can't play video" is not an issue - but some problem underlying it is, and these are not cross-platform.
-
On my machine, Vivaldi (current stable and snapshot) doesn't play that video, but Safari does.
Mac Book Pro early 2015, macOS Sierra 10.12.6
-
@hlehyaric How many OS updates have there been since Sierra? I know that Vivaldi was unable to satisfy the codec demands of some earlier versions, but is doing better in more recent ones. Not being a Mac user, I can't keep up with version names, but I think the two most recent ones are doing better.
-
@ayespy Sierra is the previous version of macOS, the current one High Sierra, the next Mojave. Nevertheless, Safari on Sierra does play the video. It's not necessarily Vivaldi related, it may have to do with my settings or extensions.
-
@hlehyaric Ah. I guess the earlier ones were something to do with lions or tigers. You need the help of a Mac user who can, or can't play the referenced video. That would not be me.
-
@ayespy said in Video playback STILL not possible in Vivaldi:

Yes, there were Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard…etc…
BTW, I don't need help. Don't get me wrong, but I'm not the OP. I just tried to play the video, it doesn't work. That's life, it's not an issue for me.
-
@rick_nl So I have tested this now on both Stable and Snapshot on Linux Mint 18, and it plays fine. I don't own any Mac devices, so simply can't test it there.
It may matter that Safari ships with proprietary codecs, and that Chrome and Firefox can afford to license these for their Mac versions, and Vivaldi has to rely on free and open source codec packs or OS default codecs to play media for all of their versions.

That, & every other of several videos on that site that i tested, stream perfectly well here for me, once i adjusted my uMatrix rules:
Is it some esoteric Mac thing?
-
@steffie Oddly, I notice that no one in this thread has even asked OP about extensions. Including, not me. Mac does have some unique video issues, but I don't really know anything about them. Our media-specialist dev has been tearing her hair over it a bit. Windows and Linux were easy to solve by comparison - but that is the case with most Mac issues. It is the hardest platform to develop a browser for unless you a) use native elements and then b) simply make a carbon copy of Safari.
-
make a carbon copy of Safari
Euw!! Blech.
My money's on OP's issue being [IF not the Mac platform itself]:
- Bad profile [they need to test with virgin profile... but how many times have so many of us said this...?]
- Bad extension/s.
- Missing Codec/s.
Given that there's various of us here on Windoze & Linux who've tested & had success at OP's site, it sure ain't a generic V problem. I am interested though that @hlehyaric also can't stream it on V... on Mac...
-
@steffie I can't stream it on Vivaldi (extensions enabled…), but I can stream it on Safari.
That said, it was just a simple test. I didn't bother to disable extensions nor adjust extensions settings as you did, nor try with a virgin profile.
The only interesting thing I found out is that I can stream that video on Safari, on a MBP early 2015 (as the OP). BTW, if I'm correct, the OP doesn't mention if he/she tried to play the video with another browser.
Euw!! Blech.
You're absolutely and wonderfully right.
-
On my late 2013 MacBook Pro running High Sierra 10.13.5, I can watch the file from the OP, I can watch Youtube videos, but I can't watch any videos in Facebook.
They play fine in Facebook in Safari and Firefox for Mac. Weird.
